I’m enjoying the new Sleeping with Sirens album, while I finally work on a piece of art for Pride month.
She laughed. “The elephant, his name is Kirisad, does not work for me. He works for pay.” Her words were clipped, her accent sharp.
Jaes blinked. “Pay?”
“Yes, like you or these others.”
“I thought the pay went to you.”
“I carry the gold, but it belongs to Kirisad. We buy what he wants. We sleep where he wants. The money is his. I am merely the caretaker of both king and coin.”
--Kevin Emmons, The Waterbearer
Is about two and a half hours enough sleep to keep the mind and body working well enough...? Probably not, but here I am. I should try and get a nap in before work tonight, but we'll see what happens. I've got a couple of things to work on... it'll be alright. 🤘🏾👁️
Hopefully your week has started on the right (or left?) foot,

Definitely not enough. I hope it gets better soon.

Me: Summer in Indiana moves in like a creepy uncle, like a new character in a previously unreleased verse of Tom Petty’s Last Dance with Mary Jane.
Wife: Tom was already playing up the creepy in that song, I hate to think what kind of uncle he’d find creepy…
The challenge: Describe the same location twice: once from the perspective of someone who loves it and once from someone who hates it.
The lover:
Stately. If I had to put it in one word. The Temple of Hemliath radiates the kind of solemn comfort every story from the mrodeni conveys. I imagine sometimes I can smell the incense. The perfume of the worshippers. The sounds of their voices lifted in some hymn or another. Not a hymn, person, really, but the temple grabs you. Did you know there are sixty-four statues along the side walls? Every one of them was someone the locals valued. Not their religious icons. Not politicians. Everyday people. Half of them were librarians, I kid you not. It makes me proud. Even if my time excavating here doesn’t secure my tenure, I’ll carry the many walks up and down the rows of honored elders memorialized in stone for the rest of my life.
The hater:
You know what really creeps me out about this place? The bugs. As in, not one. Weird, right? No bugs. What kind of underground temple next to a necropolis has no bugs? No spiders. No centipedes. And that begs the question—doesn’t it? —what’s down there that keeps all the bugs out? Whatever it is, it’s got to be worse than bugs, and what’s worse than bugs? It’s a spooky place, too. Those statues? Did Hanni tell you? Sixty-four. Every one of them has those eyes that follow you, like one of those fancy paintings at the Inulsa Library. And they’re all judging, too. Don’t get me started on the pillars. Hubris. That’s what it is. Hubris. The kind where you find out later the ministry were all cannibals.
Describe the same location twice: once from the perspective of someone who loves it and once from someone who hates it.

Shadowed Memories is a thrilling spiral into madness, and the concept of other worlds existing adjacent to ours. It’s a struggle between the natural world and that of the unbelievable. It’s also a great introduction to the character who has been on my mind for decades, Kurai Kage.

Overheard in my car:
Me: Sometimes you have to go to extreme measures with yourself to get anything done.
Kiddo: I know. I told myself I didn't want noodles, so I compromised and got noodles.
The intro to the 2018 God of War is epic in ways a can't put words to. The beauty of the forest, the worn, weathered, and hand-crafted look to all the assets. Vibrant emotion in everything. Christopher Judge.

In my ongoing quest for the best way to reach new readers I've taken a look at some avenues aside from Substack and ended up returning to Inkitt. If you've never explored the site/app before and are an avid reader, it's a good place to find new worlds to dive into. There's lots to read for free, and now there's a paid subscription option where authors can release chapters to their dedicated fans. I'll definitely consider something like that, especially since I already have a small presence there.
May your days be wonderful, sleep fulfilling, and creative spirit nourished by Meraki’s unending flames,

A friend recommended his favorite story to listen to (he does audiobooks), so I've been reading it, and the story itself is interesting so far, but the writing is killing me. It's a serialized story on Webnovel where the author released about two chapters a day for four years, with the story having a big fanbase. Since then, the author has gone on to work on other things, but my gosh is it depressing to read. The story isn't bad, or the subject matter depressing, but I'm 49 chapters in and the writing is still so very amateurish. I can acknowledge that it's great to be able to write this continuous story, releasing so much on a daily basis, but there's ridiculously repetitious paragraphs, and there are crazy little things like introducing someone holding a "rapier sword." A rapier is a type of sword!
Anyway, the point is, I understand that we live in an on-demand world where everything has to be quick and punchy, and that's how people are able to write things like this and get away with it (not to mention the horrendous declining literacy rates...) but that doesn't mean I have to settle.
I'm sticking with my plan, plotting out the volumes for my continuation to Shadowed Memories. I may be weighing my options on putting out rough drafts of chapters out there, with plans to publish them on my Substack for paid subscribers on top of other behind-the-scenes content while I think about going back to Inkitt, but I don't plan on compromising my worlds.
I’ll try and use some of this anguish and disdain for more chapter plotting.
