(no banner for this one for various reasons. Mostly because I couldnât make a half-way decent one.)
Trigun is a good show. Wolfwood is my favourite character on that show.Â
The Wolfwood
Makes one cocktail
1 oz bourbon
1/2 oz Gran Marnier
A bottle of wheat beer (weâve had success with Kronenberg 1664 Blanc)
Add bourbon and Gran Marnier to cocktail shaker with ice. Stir until very cold. Strain into a highball glass and add ice cubes. Top with wheat beer -- pour carefully to avoid a huge head (heh) -- and give it a very gentle stir.Â

Thereâs a lot of things we should (and hopefully will, one day...) say about Sailor Jupiter, the character. But letâs just stick with this for now: sheâs great. To one half of weeaboozing, sheâs the best. Sheâs a tall lady who is introduced by tossing a rude boy over her shoulder like it ainât fuck, introducing a level of bad-assery that she keeps up throughout the series.
oh and she loved flowers and cooking for her friends and pretty dresses and romance. She was tough as fuck, but that didnât stop her from being cute, or vulnerable. She rules.
This drink tastes sweet without being cloying, and gains sophistication from the herbal bitterness of the green tea, especially when combined with the mint+lime of a traditional mojito. The hint of floral from the rosewater was just...câmon. Thereâs gotta be a rose element.
also worth noting that itâs the tallest of our sailor moon cocktails. (idc if like four other characters are canonically taller than jupes IN MY MIND AND HEART SHE TOWERS OVER EVERYONE ELSE LIKE THE ATHENA SHE IS)
anyway hereâs the recipe:
Cold Brewed Green TeaÂ
makes enough for 3 Sailor Jupiters (although you really should brew extra)
3 tsp loose leaf green tea
1.5 cups cold water
Add tea and water to a glass pitcher with a filter or a very clean french coffee press. In a pinch, use a mason jar and a fine-mesh strainer. In a super-pinch, use a glass that fits your cocktail strainer and a piece of plastic wrap. Â Put it in the fridge and let steep for 3 hours (or up to.... honestly like a week, it wonât over-steep and it probably wonât kill you?).Â
The Sailor Jupiter
Makes 1 cocktail.
A lot of fresh mint (at least 10 leaves)
2 tsp sugar
1 oz lime juiceÂ
2 oz white rum
3 oz iced green tea
Club soda
Rosewater in a spray bottle.
Add mint leaves and sugar to the bottom of your cocktail shaker and muddle gently -- you want to release the mint flavour but not to totally macerate the leaves. Add lime juice and stir into the minty sugar. Add rum and ice and shake until your shaker is cold to the touch.Â
Strain into a highball glass. Add ice to the glasses, then add iced green tea. Stir very gently, then top with club soda. Spritz with rosewater.Â
I love your drinks, are you going to finish up with drinks for the rest of the sailor scouts by chance?
Thanks bud! Weâll post all the senshi eventually, with breaks for some Trigun and Naruto. But weâre planning to post The Sailor Jupiter in May, so get pumped.
Look, this time around we donât have a whole lot to say that we havenât already said during our Anthy post. Utena is a young woman torn between her own desires to play the hero and what society has told to desire, i.e. being a lovely princess, a delicate flower, etc. etc.Â
The sex scene was extremely upsetting.Â
This drink, though. We may not have a lot to say about Utena, but it was important to us that we nail Utenaâs fundamental characteristics, that sense of being a young woman torn, those disparate traits that Utena herself melds.Â
But it was also important that it didnât taste like hot trash.Â
The Utena starts floral, naturally, but then opens quickly into bittersweet grapefruit and spicy heat from the hot sauce. Itâs not a smooth drink, but itâs warming all the same. Trust us.Â
The Utena
1.5 oz tequila (we use a blanco, but a reposado gives it a nice burn)
1/4 oz lime juice
1/2 tsp agave syrup (a half teaspoon of simple syrup can work as well, but it isnât as nice)
2 dashes of hot pepper sauce such as tabasco
3 oz grapefruit juice (ours is fresh-squeezed, but bottled works fine as long as it isnât too sweet)
Rosewater in a spray bottle
Add tequila, lime juice, agave syrup, and hot pepper sauce to your shaker. Add ice and stir until very cold. Strain into coupes or martini glasses.Top with chilled grapefruit juice (you can stir it with your leftover ice to get it nice and cold) and spritz with rosewater.Â
Weâre taking a small break from our irregularly scheduled Sailor Moon cocktails to post something else weâve been working on.
Earlier this year, both mods of this blog watched Revolutionary Girl Utena for the first time. Although they did not create drinks for every character, they did create a few.Â
For the purpose of this recipe, we decided to try a more informal style of âreviewâ.
Amanda:Â So, this drink (the recipe is on the bottom of the post and is totally worth scrolling for)Â is the Anthy, which is one of the few character-cocktails we did for Utena characters.
Michelle:Â Like, one of two. Guess who the other one is!
Amanda:Â TOUGH ONE BUDDY (but we did do one for Saionji, it involved setting things on fire).
Michelle: (I kind of love Saionji he's the worst.)
Amanda:Â (Right???? and he briefly got better AND THEN YET WORSE)
Michelle: Anyway, Anthy. She's a tough cookie to get a handle on.
Amanda:Â But yes, Anthy. She's really interesting but... maybe not fully explored?
Michelle:Â The ending just felt so rushed, even though it kind of wasn't?
Amanda: Yeah!
(note: spoilers for the end of Revolutionary Girl Utena ahead!)
Michelle:Â She's basically the "witch" of the story, but all of that stuff is kind of introduced at the end. There are hints that there's more to her than we think, but I think we carried a lot of that into the show.
Amanda: Right, but they're only ever hints.
Michelle:Â We don't get any idea of what's going on behind those spooky glasses until the last three episodes.
Amanda: Right!
Michelle:Â And by then there's so much else happening.
Amanda:Â So there IS a depth there but we never get to it because we're too busy... becoming cars? Laying eggs? The show didn't do Anthy justice is what I'm getting at here. If even 30 seconds of stair-climbing per episode got cut, we could have really investigated what it meant for Anthy to have Utena making the choices she did.
Michelle: Or just shorten the Black Rose arc.
Amanda:Â Oh, yes, I forgot about that entirely!
Michelle:Â Yeah, maybe cut back on the stock footage. Or maybe we're missing the point of Utena? I hear-tell from the internet, that the repetition is supposed to be thematically important.
Amanda: Hm. That's a valuable point -- that maybe exploring the depth of Anthy would make for a different show. And if the repetition is meant to reinforce the idea that all of this happens again and again and again, maybe an exploration of Anthy would do the opposite -- imply that this is all new to her.
Michelle: I actually don't mind not knowing what Anthy is thinking at any given time, but it makes it hard to get a grip on her as a character, but thatâs probably the point. Like everything else at the academy, there's layers and smoke and mirrors.
Amanda: That's true -- she was revealed to be sort of a terrible person, but maybe not even a PERSON at all, and if that deception is the point...
Michelle: But let's go with what we know: she is Rapey Mcpedo's little sister.
Amanda: OH MY GOD
Michelle: what was his name
he was the actual worst
like not even in a trashy 'fun' way like saionji and maybe touga
(touga was 100% trash but he wasn't always fun)
Amanda: oh no I've had too much wine I totally just googled "what is rapey mcpedo's name"
Michelle:Â LET US KNOW WHAT YOU FIND OUT
Amanda: YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW
but yeah, Saoinji and even Touga were garbage fun
Michelle: touga was mostly garbage and sometimes fun
Amanda: But Sir Anthy's Pedobro was just... unpleasant.
Michelle: Which was also the point probably. He was Touga, but without Touga's tiny sliver of humanity.
Amanda: (akio!)
Michelle: UGH. RIGHT. FUCK THAT GUY
Amanda:Â RIGHT?
Michelle:Â OK SO
He was a prince to everyone, and there was a fax machine, and they were in a cabin???
Amanda: wait what
what
was i
sober?
I don't remember the cabin.
Michelle: yeah dude
maybe that was the movie
Amanda: god yeah maybe
Michelle: Anyway, Anthy did something to stop him from dying and she got pincushioned by swords in a coffin.
Amanda: I remember the Anthy-pincushion
Michelle: Wait, first, Anthy told everyone that she killed the prince, so they punished her with harsh vibes (represented by swords).
Amanda: Harshswords, got it.
ANYWAY
Michelle: Ok and then Akio and Anthy are maybe both dead? Then, when Utena finds them, she has just come out of a coffin because her parents were dead. And Touga and Saionji were there briefly.
Amanda: this
makes sense
ish
Michelle: does it???
Amanda: no
but she finds them in the coffin
Michelle: Utena wants to save Anthy so she becomes a prince, and goes to Ohtori, not in that order, where she meets the Rose Bride but has forgotten Anthy.
Amanda: She also wants to BE Akio. But by having that experience, she lives up to what was expected of her/what she expected of herself.
Michelle: Anthy meanwhile has gone from being childhood sword cushion to being a 14 year old who wears a dress gets smacked around been teen dirtbags.
Amanda: ughhhhhhh
Michelle: never 4get they are all in fucking middle school
7 feet tall and in middle school
Amanda: I had 4gotten
Remembering that makes me enjoy the show less, frankly
(pictured: literal 14 year olds)
Michelle: the events of Utena take place like two years after Utena's parents die i'm p sure
Amanda: OH MY GOD
I hadn't even thought of that but YEAH
like... what's his head, the redhead
he was at least 13 during those early scenesMichelle: Touga, who has sex with all the ladies and probably some of the dudes, is like 13.
Amanda: yes yes thanks
but
ugh
Michelle: what are the odds that saionji is a virgin
Amanda: VERY HIGH
Michelle: Do you think Anthy liked Utena from the start?
Amanda: I donât think.... I don't think that sort of thing enters the equation for Anthy. I'm not sure she could/can LIKE people.
Michelle: True, Anthy probably doesnât like anything very much. I suppose that question depends on whether or not we think Utena has tried this before. I say she hasn't--this was Utena's first crack at being the prince.
Amanda: I think so too. And I think that there's something to be said for the fact that Utena is a girl (she's still a girl, she's like 13) because, like, the men who fight for Anthy fight for the IDEA of OWNING a BRIDE.
Michelle: Right, it's a status thing
Amanda: Whereas for Utena, her idea was always that she wanted to BE someone, not OWN someone. But I got sidetracked there thinking about Utena. Poor Anthy.
Michelle: Good point. Utena was never motivated by owning Anthy, but by being a prince. And even that wasn't really her first goal. And it's hard to talk about one without the other
Amanda: Itâs so easy to ignore her in favour of characters with personality, especially in those early episodes.
Michelle: I would argue thatâs true even in the latter episodes. Anthy was originally motivated by love, and a little bit of selfishness. She wanted to keep her brother safe, yes, but also by her side?
Amanda: Or at least... alive? Or maybe even not so much by her side but... not by anyone else's side.
Michelle: She might actually be the only character on the show not motivated by self-interest. She was willing to become whatever she needed to be in the eyes of others to save Akio and then, later in life, serve him. And maybe that's why she's at once opaque and transparent: she's what people want her to be, but we don't know who she really is, and maybe she doesn't know herself.
Amanda: That's a really interesting way to look at it! Fuck, Anthy. You can do better. She's spent SO LONG (infinitely long?) being what other people want. Living like that, how do you know who YOU are?
Are you anyone at all?
Michelle: Maybe she doesn't even care anymore. Until Utena comes alongâŚ
Amanda: Maybe it doesn't matter.
Michelle: The thing about Utena is that she's not selfish, per se, but she is self-serving. She doesn't notice all the stuff Anthy's got going on, so she just treats her like a person.
Amanda: Oh my god, you're right. It's not that she was trying to help Anthy become her own person, she just didnât notice that Anthy wasn't ALREADY her own person.
Michelle: yeah!
AND THAT'S WHY WE PUT SAKE IN THE DRINK
Amanda: NO LISTEN
Michelle: hit me
Amanda: That's why we we put black walnut bitters in the drink.
Michelle: BOOM
Amanda: BECAUSE UTENA TREATED ANTHY LIKE THERE WAS A HARD SHELL THAT NEEDED TO BE CRACKED
done
Michelle: *slamdunk*
Amanda: But seriously though I think we put sake in the drink because it's a nice smooth base that is deceptively flavourful. Maybe? tbh I'm not sure I recall our thought processes on the sake BUT IT WORKS so whatever.
Michelle: Also we wanted something traditionally/culturally Japanese even though literally nothing about Anthy is Japanese except for her voice actress.
Amanda: WelllLLLLlllllllLLL except that there's a certain element of the "traditional woman" to her, right?
Michelle: True!
Amanda: One that's juxtaposed pretttttty strongly against the non-traditional women (Anthy, Nanami, the best friendâŚ)
Michelle: Wakasomething.
Amanda: Wakame! Wakame?
Michelle: That sounds right.
Amanda: I think so.
Michelle: i ain't googling that
Amanda: me neither
Michelle: this is a facts-free chat
Why you gotta remind me what we could've had with Nanami, if the show had just committed to her arc.
Amanda: YES. The show, I think, had a certain respect for traditional womanhood? Like.... Anthy wasn't happy, but she and Utena both seemed happiEST when Anthy was fulfilling traditional wifely roles.
Michelle: But Anthy was also miserable being passive.
Amanda: That's true, that's true.
Michelle: Remember the last fight scene?
Amanda: OH RIGHT!
Michelle: They way she looked on the couch...
Amanda: Okay, yes, true.
Michelle: âŚup until she fucking stabs Utena. WHAT WAS THAT EVEN.
Amanda: I AM STILL NOT SURE?
Michelle: Man, Utena really is the shojou Evangelion.
Amanda: YES. Itâs baffling, thereâs weird music, people just fucking doing things. You don't get it? Neither does the creator so TOO BAD.
Amanda: So we had sake for reasons already listed.
Michelle: Sake is smooth and sweet without being cloying.
Amanda: Black walnut bitters for retconned reasons as above.
Michelle: Creme de Cassis because it's expensive and the colour worked?
Amanda: And then some Creme de Cassis because a) classy b) purple c) adds a bit of sweetness c) strong.
Michelle: Right, that makes more sense.
Amanda: âCLASSYâ is the word we want. âCLASSYâ. (But yes it's expensive.)
Michelle: Creme de CLASSIS
i just workshopped that one
let me know what u think
Amanda: well i loled
so
a+?
Michelle: THANK YOU FRIEND
Amanda: I AM HERe FOR U
Michelle: We also used egg whites because egg whites make for amazing cocktails! It smooths everything out, joins all the dispirit flavours together in a lovely mix.
Amanda: This was our first egg white Weeabooze. It also makes the top look really pretty.
Michelle: That foam at the top is a great pillow for a spritz of rose water.
Amanda: I think we would get our tumblr credentials removed if we made an Anthy that didn't have any rose flavour at all.
The Anthy
½ oz creme de cassis
2 oz sake
1 eggwhite
Black walnut bitters (we use Fee Brothers)
Rosewater in a spray bottle
Add egg white, sake, creme de cassis, and 2 dashes of bitters to cocktail shaker. Shake dry (with no ice) for longer than you think you should -- you want to egg to be nice and frothy when youâre finished. It should look like this:
Add ice to the ingredients in the shaker. Shake again until chilled.
Strain into coupe or martini glasses. Spritz with one spray of rosewater -- you want the drink to smell a bit rosy but not taste like a grandma.
Michelle: That might be it. In summary: Anthy is a witch, maybe doesn't have an inner self but would quite like to develop one.
Amanda: RIGHT! And, thanks to Utena, she might even get that opportunity.
Michelle: Or at least take some time away from her brother's shitty, horrible presence to find out who she is.
Amanda: kill him
Michelle: seriously, that he doesn't die is the worst injustice. i guess he kind of dies in the movie??? maybe????
Amanda: I thought he did for sure????? let's pretend he did
Michelle: i do every day
Amanda: But that Anthy even survived all of this bullshit is a testament to her personal strength.
Michelle: Yeah. Utena showed her that she could only grow as a person by leaving the fairy tales behind, She did this by reaching for her in a sword coffin, off the edge of a cliff. But still.
Amanda: STILL.
Michelle: Does Wade have any thoughts about Anthy? Either the drink or the character.

I really like this blog, especially since I've had trouble finding a good repository of anime cocktails, there are just so few on here so far.
Yeah. Thatâs come up during our âââââmeetingsâââââ. Weâre hoping to fix our updating schedule so we post a little more frequently, but we are both human adults with careers and hobbies and social lives so this blog sometimes suffers from our schedules.Â
but weâve got something coming down the pipe tonight! stay tuned....
Itâs been a while, but have we talked about how easy it was, as kids, to imply a bunch of character development onto the Senshi? This is a huge disclaimer: much of this is what we remember rather than what we saw in rewatching. But really, isnât the effect the show had on our development the most important thing? make a joke about getting drunk here,
Sailor Mars is beautiful. I mean, they are all beautiful, obviously, but everyone likes to talk about how Rei is fucking gorgeous. Usagi pretty much had a crush on her from scene one, and Minako DEFINITELY was gay for Rei. But the thing about Rei is, while she was certainly vain and self-centred, her ego was not focused on her appearance*.
Because Rei was so talented, so beautiful, and graceful, it seemed like the other characters expected her to be very mature, very adult. But she wasnât. Rei--especially in the anime--was always just a kid, the same as Usagi (and the rest). But unlike Ami, Reiâs type of character was underepresented in Western childrenâs media: she was a mean girl who was still a hero. Good women arenât often allowed to be brash, to be selfish, to be bossy.  Good women are bookish or shy. They are (ugh) moe.Â
Just like Ami could have been a stand-in for those bookish little girls, Rei was a stand-in for those of us who were a little smart, a lot bossy, and confident in ourselves and our abilities -- even if we werenât always right. We would have been heroes if we had been boys in a shonen anime. But in Sailor Moon, we were allowed to be heroes just the way we were.Â
In another show, girls like Rei would have been the mean girl bully. In this show, just as in life, bossy girls can be friends with shy girls and soft girls. Girls can be friends and love each other, regardless of how society defines female companionship.Â
I think this is best exemplified in Sailor Marsâ âredemptionâ arc, and I use quotes because Sailor Mars never really needed to be redeemed. In Reiâs redemption arc, she doesnât suddenly become nicer, per se, but rather she becomes less guarded. Her love for Usagi was always there, but it changed over the course of the first season. Rei expressed her love for Usagi in the beginning by trying to push Usagi into being âbetterâ (aka being more like Rei), and by taking control of Usagiâs leadership--both because she wanted to protect her, and to be perfectly frank, Rei thought she could do it better). By the end of the season, however, Rei understands that just because Usagi is gentle, doesnât make her weak. And, this in turn, letâs Rei understand that showing affection for people doesnât make her weak.Â
What makes this excellent, is that Rei doesnât change, necessarily. Rei is still nasty, and Rei never stops criticising Usagi, but you get the feeling that the emotion behind the criticism has shifted. She pushes Usagi because she loves Usagi, not just because she thinks Usagi would be better off being like Rei.
Anyway, on to the drink.
First thingâs first, we tried really hard not to use Fireball. itâs the obvious choice, right? Itâs right there in the goddamn name, and it tastes like cinnamon hearts. Sweet and spicy, just like Rei.
But but but Fireball is trash liquour for freshmen. T.T We refused to use it, at first, and we tried many alternatives. A lot of cinnamon-infused simple syrups, a lot of port, red wine, and smokey whiskies were all used and were all just not right. Sailor Mars, as a drink, honestly took us the longest to get right.
Anyway, we just gave up and used Fireball, which we should have just done from the start because itâs perfect.
This drink is sweet enough to go down easily, and spicy enough to warm you up. Itâs perfect for the fall season. Serve it to all your friends to impress them with how cool and sophisticated you are (do not tell them about the Fireball).
The Sailor Mars drink is probably the cheapest of the cocktails weâve created (do not tell her that, it would piss her off). Other than the all spice cloves Michelle bought from a wayyyy too expensive bulk spice store on Queen St., the ingredients are very reasonable.
Sailor Mars
2 oz fireball whisky
½ oz allspice syrup (recipe follows)
4 oz cranberry juice
Add fireball whisky and allspice syrup to cocktail shaker with ice. Stir until chilled. Strain into lowball glasses and top with cranberry juice (give it a little stir!). Garnish with roasted cinnamon if available (but you can use plain cinnamon if thatâs all you have!). Garnish with a cinnamon stick.Â
Allspice Syrup
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
3 tablespoons ground allspice ground or berries
Add water and allspice to a saucepan. If you have cheesecloth or a teaball (or drawstring teabags!) use it for the allspice -- you donât want the syrup to be grainy, if you can help it. However, if youâre using berries, donât worry about it. You can strain it out with a regular strainer. Let it come to a boil over high heat, then simmer for 10 minutes.
If you used a teaball or bag, remove it now and discard. Turn the heat to low and whisk in the sugar until dissolved. Turn off the heat and let sit until cooled. Store in the fridge.Â
*Actually, wonderfully, no one in Sailor Moon ever seems upset by anyone being âprettierâ than they are (except for the villains, maybe). Everyone just seems really jazzed to hang around beautiful people!
TBH, we here at Weezboozing are not Ami Mizuno fans. We get that lots of people are, and I think we get why.Â
Sheâs a nerd just like we all were (donât lie; you totally were). And sheâs smarter â thus, better, or at least according to our parents and teachers  â than the Usagis and Minakos of the world, just like we wished we were. And sheâs also smarter than the other fukken nerds, seeing through the Nergaverseâs not-terribly-opaque plots.
But sheâs still kind and gentle, and people still love her. Once Usagi comes around, sheâs even popular! The pretty volleyball players cool temple girls still want to be her friend. Most importantly: sheâs still a magical girl.Â
She was the better version of us. She was the us our parents and teachers wanted us to be and yet she was still the things we wanted to be.
How great does that sound?
Well, too bad. Itâs not great. She spends 60% of the time with her mouth closed and 40% of the time talking about goddamned cram school.Â
Yes, sheâs a blank slate. Sheâs the Bella Swan of Sailor Moon. Is that a good thing? Us weeaboozers donât think it is.  It just means thereâs an empty page on the team, except that this empty page gets filled in with the words âCRAM SCHOOLâ over and over again.
So, after all of that, Iâm a little ashamed to say that Sailor Mercury (the drink) is one of our favourites.Â
The Sailor Mercury is simple and pretty, just like Ami. Itâs sweet but never too sweet, itâs very easy to drink. It evokes the bubble/mist motif of Sailor Mercury herself.Â
Plus, thereâs a little snack when youâre done!
This drink was the first time any of us (Drunk #1, her partner who had never seen Sailor Moon, and Drunk #2) had ever tried elderflower liqueur. And oh man, elderflower liqueur is gooooooooood. We use St. Germain, which, yes, is expensive. But we promise itâs worth it (plus, we live in Ontario. I guarantee that wherever you live, St. Germain is more expensive here than it is there). I understand that there are other varieties available in other countries; Iâm sure theyâre all good.Â
So hereâs the recipe. Itâs simple to make, fancy-tasting, and appropriate for the character in that itâs light and refreshing but it lacks depth (which isnât necessarily a bad thing in a drink!).Â
THE SAILOR MERCURY
This recipe makes one Sailor Mercury. Youâll need a cup to mix in (I use the base of my cocktail shaker; a pint glass will also work), a long spoon, at least long enough to reach the bottom of the mixing glass, and a cocktail strainer (or some sort of tea-straining basket. I wonât judge). Youâll also need to freeze some fresh blueberries. Lay them in a single layer on a tupperware lid and stick them in the freezer for a few hours. Frozen berries from the freezer section of the grocery store will stain your drink purple, which is pretty but not quite what weâre after here. Â
INGREDIENTS
1 oz gin
1 oz elderflower liqueur (see notes above, we use St. Germain)
8 frozen blueberriesÂ
Club soda or sparkling water
Place frozen blueberries into a coupe or a martini glass.
Place several ice cubes in your mixing cup. Add gin and elderflower liqueur and stir until the outside of the glass is cold to the touch. Strain over the into your prepared glass (the one with the blueberries).
Top with the club soda or sparking water.
SHABON SPRAY ALTERNATIVE
Follow instructions above, but use a cocktail shaker to shake the gin and elderflower. Youâll end up with a misty cocktail rather than a clear one.
VIRGIN ALTERNATIVE
ummmmm thereâs really no good non-alcoholic gin substitute, sorry friends. You can buy elderflower soda at Ikea according to Drunk #1. Maybe use tonic water, elderflower soda, and the blueberries??????? idk whatever sorry babes. please let us know if you have any better ideas, weâre really very good at drinking and really terribly bad at not-drinking.Â
Sailor Moon was a great show. Not only was it fucking great, it was formative as fuck to young women the world over, including baby Amanda and Michelle. And maybe for you as well, friend who is reading this. I canât imagine why else youâd be reading a boozy tumblr dedicated to a 90s anime.
This project started, like so many projects do, with watching the Madoka movies. We wanted to try themed cocktails for the marathon (or we just wanted to get drunk and Amanda is really into ~mixology~). Most of the ones we tried to make were pretty bad but one stuck and it was enough to make us think about other ~adult~ ~beverages~ we could make for childrenâs television shows.
In our excitement for the (then) newly announced Sailor Moon Crystal, we decided to marathon the entire original series, and because weâre always looking to get extremely drunk on good drinks, we thought it might be fun to make a new cocktail for every Senshi.
Hereâs the thing about Sailor Moon though: there are a LOT of Senshi. This project took us nearly an entire year. Naoko Takeuchi is wonderful and magical and a special dream baby but she could not write characters past their introductions to save her life.
letâs talk Sailor Moon, the character from the original 90's anime. Usagi Tsukino was the most important character in the anime, basically. Every story arch, every new character introduced, every villain, every macguffin, all of it revolved in one way or another around Usagi goddamn Tsukino, for better or worse (and by the end it was kind of for worse).
Regardless of our eventual Usagi fatigue, there is no question that the first drink HAD to be hers. And luckily for us, Usagi was not a difficult character to pin down. As much as the lovely folk on tumbls like to write 3000-word essays about the time Usagi blinked in a frame next to her friends, the fact is that Usagi is not a complex character. Thatâs not a bad thing! (Except maybe when we spend 200 episodes exploring that character). Usagi is, in order:
sweet
caring
loyal
cry baby????
immature
optimistic
late for school
And thatâs pretty much it. She loves her friends (so, so much) and her lame boyfriend (why) and her nagging cat friends ( WHY) and her terrible daughter (UGH WHY) and sometimes her family when the anime remembers they exist and, very, very occasionally, Naru (who?). She cries, she whines, she complains, she schemes (poorly), and she is probably asleep.
But we love her, because she is allowed to cry, and love her friends, and be silly, and be serious, and win over everyone not because sheâs the bravest or the strongest or the prettiest, but because sheâs the most genuine. Usagi is great. There was never any doubt about that.
But sheâs also simple. And the drink reflects that.
Just like Usagi, itâs sweet, itâs bubbly, itâs not too strong (on its own), itâs a bit silly, and itâs a great way to start a night of drinking. Just like Usagi!!!!
This drink came together really easily. (A) had a bottle of Barefoot sparkling white in her fridge, leftover from a baby shower and we needed to use it up. Itâs bubbly, and itâs not very alcoholic.
The strawberry lemonade slushy was sweet, but not sickeningly sweet. Mixed with the sparkling wine, itâs refreshing, a little tart, and light on the pallet. Very fitting for the perennial light-weight character!
THE SAILOR MOONÂ
This recipe makes two Sailor Moons. You'll need a blender (I use this fabulous immersion blender; anything that can chew up some frozen strawberries will do just fine), and a sharp paring knife or good vegetable peeler.
INGREDIENTS
8 frozen strawberriesÂ
2 teaspoons of sugarÂ
Juice from two large lemons
Dry sparkling white wine (or champagne if that's how you roll, I guess)
PREPARATION
Blend strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice until smooth but still thick. Taste for sweetness. Your sparkling wine will add some extra sweetness, so don't overdo it, but you don't want this mixture to be overly tart. Remember that this is Usagi we're talking about here, not Chibiusa. If it's too tart, add more sugar in 1/2 teaspoon increments and blend.Â
Spoon the mixture into two champagne flutes. Gently pour sparkling wine over the top and garnish with a lemon twist (I make mine following these instructions).
It looks prettier layered, but it tastes better stirred. The choice is yours~~~~
VIRGIN SAILOR MOON
Look, I feel like we should probably do this for the baby weebs / abstainers out there, but "not drinking" is not really in our skill set. Here are some options that would maybe work, though? Gonna be honest, we probably won't test these. GOOD LUCK LITTLE ONES LET US KNOW HOW IT GOES.Â
Replace sparkling wine with non-alcoholic sparkling wine
Replace sparkling wine with sparkling lemonade; reduce lemon in strawberry mixture by half
AND REMEMBER KIDS: Unless you want to end up in the ER, do not attempt blending the frozen strawberries if you've already had a few drinks. SAILOR MOON SAYS.
