Pharma hacks are hacks of legitimate websites that aim to make money by promoting pharmaceutical products, typically Viagra and related erectile dysfunction treatments (regalis, cialis, tadalafil, etc) - unbeknownst to the legitimate site owner or operator.
Often the first thing the operator of the website knows about the hack is when someone reports that the site's Google search results are hijacked and showing descriptions mentioning Viagra or other pharmaceuticals. Variations of this hack also promote payday loans, casinos and gambling, software downloads or pornography.
One of the biggest problems when informing website owners and operators that their site is the victim of a pharma hack, is that the site continues to display as normal to most visitors - only degrading later as further exploitation gets more aggressive.
This is a form of 'parasite hosting' and is one of the worst forms of 'black hat' Search Engine Optimisation. In fact many people regard this as beyond the limits of black hat SEO and call it out for what it actually is, plain illegal hacking.
In this series of articles we will look at:
the process - how do the hackers do the pharma hack
why do they do the pharma hack
how can you prevent your site hosting Viagra products
how can you check if your website is hosting Viagra products
and how to fix/clean/repair/de-hack/remove the pharma hack from your website

Most webmasters / website owners are not Joomla security experts. The vast majority of hacking incidents we see are preventable with some simple maintenance.
The fact is that your Joomla website needs to be set-up correctly in the first place. Knowing the correct Joomla settings and file permissions is not as straight forward as some would have you believe.
Websites get hacked every day, getting Joomla security right can be tricky. From the moment your site goes live, hackers start probing it looking for security vulnerabilities. The most common hacks are due to out-of-date Joomla files and third party add-ons that have not been updated.
Joomla Security Audit £350
Our Joomla security audit offers incredible value for money, not only will we list all of your out of date add-ons and where to download their latest versions, but we will gather together all the information on how to update them as well.
We will install and configure a backup add-on for you to run at least once a week, having a backup of your site is of imperative importance.
DO NOT rely on your hosting company for backups, it is YOUR responsibility to backup your website with any hosting company.
Also included in the price is a full written report on your websites set-up and the best set-up for your requirements.
The final part of this package is a report on your server, pointing out any weaknesses and what you might be able to do. Most websites are on a shared hosting package that you have no control of. However it is possible to ask your hosting company to make some changes that can make a big difference.
Our Joomla security audit will reduce the chances of your site being hacked, additionally should you suffer a Joomla hacking incident we'll have setup a backup routine so you are prepared with back-ups and a full disaster recover plan.
Professional de-hacking service that will have your site back up and running, fully cleaned with 24 hours.
The service offers the following steps:
Run our custom built scanner through your site's files
Collate the information and remove the uploaded hacker files
Overlay the same version of Joomla files over your current ones
Update to the latest version of Joomla within its branch (example 1.5, 2.5, 3x)
Update all extension to the latest versions (free ones or where you have a subscription for commercial add-ons)
Go through the error logs to find the initial point of entry, secure/seal where possible
Write and deliver a report of things you will need to implement, for example change passwords, backup routine, etc
We also re-scan your site seven days later and twenty eight days after the initial scan. If any new hacks are found we will clear them and inform you of the incident.

They can give you total control over how your URLs are generated. BUT, they can also clear their list of URLs and rebuild them in a completely different way.
I've seen sites with thousands of 404 errors and htaccess files that are 10MB in size. That's the amount of data in most YouTube videos.
So the question is are they worth it? I strongly believe NOT, I don't believe SEF URLs
are that important any more and the issues that third party Joomla SEF extensions cause are simply not worth the minimal gain you might benefit from having them.
This article highlight my opinion on SEF URLs, that they have little to no benefit especially when compared to a humans want for logic in navigation, basically people want the page title, menu item and URL to all say the same thing, it's a trust thing.
The human element is more valuable than the search engine element, in recent months I've seen absolute evidence that Google favours flat menus, basically every article a top level menu item. This can easily be achieved in Joomla because of the ability to use menu type 'menu alias', you can have a menu that appears to be multi leveled but is really all top level. This does remove that human friendly element of my navigation, but the rankings in Google speak for themselves. If you build a menu navigation structure that is all top level and use menu aliases you have 100% control - 100% control of your URLs and absolutely no risk of your URLs suddenly changing and thousands of 404 error being recorded day in day out. This way of building your menu structure as opposed to using a third party SEF extension will not add to your htaccess file and slow your site down.
My opinion on third party Joomla SEF extensions is that they offer no real benefit to a competent Joomla user / web designer. Anyone who knows the Joomla system and builds websites with it does not need to use an extension to create the URLs they want, do not use them, if your developer tells you they are necessary for good clean URLs, then please ask them about the problems they cause:
Excessive database queries
Very slow loading pages
Sudden loss of URLs leading to 404 errors
Excessive htaccess files(not all but some add to htaccess - the first file read in Joomla)
Upgrading SEF extension loses settings(all too often)
Their is a combination of software that most developers would say you need to use an SEF extension, Joomla 1.5 and VirtueMart combine to create URLs that are simply unfathomable for search engines and humans, but Twitter does the same, there are occasions when we don't mind how a URL looks even if it's at a time when we're about to hand over your hard earned money. Make sure your site has done the hard work of getting the sale before sending the client to the product page, you can build your site to use Joomla to the max before the final link to VirtueMart for the sale. All your SEO and general optimisation done on core Joomla pages then use your menu to link to product pages avoiding VirtueMart category pages.
Every point of view in favour of third party Joomla SEF extensions can very easily be countermanded, not just with a list of reasons why they break sites, but also ways of doing what they do with core Joomla functionality.
In conclusion
Build your site properly and the URLs will be exactly how you want them, avoid bad URLs with VirtueMart and similar add-ons by creating core Joomla pages only going to the add-ons at the last step needed.
The negative affects of SEF extensions can greatly reduce your site's Google rankings, slow page load times and leave you with broken inbound links.
If you're thinking of using SEF extensions for better SEO strength, think again. They do the exact opposite and obviously the worst possible affect on your site is down time or broken inbound links.
In Joomla 1.5 you have no control over meta description and meta keywords for most components.
Here is a short list of some of the components in question:
Contacts
Category Blogs
Section Blogs
Web Links
Home Page
DT Register
J Events
Chrono Forms
VirtueMart
On the whole it is just the first/front page of these components that you have no control of the metas.
Here is a work around that enables you to set the metas you want on any page that has a menu link.
This will involve editing you templates index.php file. You should do this via ftp (file transfer protocol) or similar server file editing software. You might be able to do this via your Joomla administrator area using the template manager function.
Some Joomla 1.5 templates are built on a framework so the main index.php file within your active template folder might not be the file you need to edit, you will need to track down the file that has this tag in it '<jdoc:include type="head" />'. If you are struggling to find the file, download it to your computer and search the folder for the tag in question.
When you have found the file with the include head tag, past this code into the file directly below the '<jdoc:include type="head" />' tag.

I created a blog on wordpress.com with the username Web Designer Lancashire.
Creating a blog on Wordpress is effortless, the designs are very basic and they want money from you to be able to improve the look and feel. I'm not going to bother.
The blog for me is a way of having an industry related URL that I can build backlinks to myself.
If I keep adding good quality regular content that will help, appeal or introduce people to the topics I'm writing about, my job is done and I get what I hope will be good quality backlinks with the exact anchor text I want.
Visit http://webdesignerlancashire.wordpress.com/ to see how a simple blog can help you with your SEO, also in a month I've had 42 visitors click through from the blog, a modest start but a start never the less.

Search Engine Optimisation - SEO, involves a number of different aspects many of which sound complex to newcomers to web design / web management.
The truth is there is no magic involved! The process is actually fairly straight-forward, even if it does involve quite a lot of jargon.
Keyword research - Putting yourself in the shoes of the typical person who is looking for your product or service and deciding what they would type into a search engine. Also analyse competitor sites for their idea of good keywords. You could also consult a thesaurus for suitable synonyms for your keywords. Using online keyword tools enables you to see the number of searches made for various terms on search engines.
Website optimisation - Putting those keywords into the pages of your site. Put them in titles, headings, sub headings, into your body text and meta descriptions. Avoid keyword stuffing, keep your site's content natural and above all readable.
Backlinks - Google in particular put a lot of weight on the number of 'in-bound links'. The theory is that if lots of people are linking to you then you must be important. Also if important sites are linking to you, you may be of note.
Directory listings - Not all sites are equal. Sites that list sites in your field can bring plenty of traffic and some directories - such as The Open Directory Project feed directly into Google and Alexa so are worth chasing. Avoid spammy directories that are not relevant to your business / sector and as much as possible get DoFollow links.
Blogging - Posting articles on sites like this is a good way to bring visitors to your site, but the articles must have value and worth. Your mindset must be to put your information / message in front of people who might not visit your site normally, in an effort to bring them to your site.
When Will I See The Benefits Of My Joomla SEO Expenditure
It may take a month or so for your site to start being ranked or rank better in search engines. With so many factors involved you shouldn't trust anyone who 'guarantees' you will rank well. Past results - and current results - can give a strong indicator.
If you are looking to hire a professional Joomla SEO Company then check their rankings in search engines, don't be afraid to ask the questions that need asking.

Web Design Lancashire specialise in LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) hosting. Linux is a UNIX-like operating system, Apache is webserver software, MySQL is the database software and PHP is a web scripting language.
We have a range of Joomla hosting packages to suite everybody. Through our experiences of dealing with many clients - and their web servers - we've seen just how wrong some other web hosting companies get things.
We custom configure our web servers for hosting Joomla websites.
Standard hosting
Bronze - £12 per month 200MB web space up to 1GB bandwidth per month
Silver - £17 per month 500MB web space up to 2GB bandwidth per month
Our hosting is not cheap but it is secure and reliable, hosting that costs £20 per year does not offer any level of services, it's simply cheap. If your site is constantly plagued with downtime and slow loading you know why paying more is worth the extra cost.
We take the hassle out of what should be a simple service.
Joomla Site Transfer
we can move your site from your current host to our hosting for as little as £90:
Execute the actual moving of the site
Scan site files for 'dropped' files - hacker activity
Check for known vulnerable components
This offers incredible value for money as the scanning and checking costs three times the £90 price, when done as a separate service.

The basics of Joomla SEO are different to SEOing other website platforms.
The architecture of categories and menus are not fully controllable on a page by page basis. You have to understand and follow the rules of how a Joomla powered website works.
All too many Joomla developers are not good enough to control the structure of URLs and do not have the SEO knowledge to understand why it is important.
Joomla SEO - Importance Of Page Titles
If you have just a little SEO knowledge, you would be amazed how many websites have the most basic mistakes. Page titles like 'Home' or 'About Us', these can be used for the text in a menu item but never, never, never for a page title.
Page titles can make up 20% to 95% of your on page SEO strength. If all you have on a page is an image, image alt text, a short meta description and for URL, the page title will be approximately 90% to 95% of your SEO strength.
The number of sites you see with bad page titles is shocking. The page title is the clickable link Google displays in its listings, fail to get this right - fail to rank well.
Joomla SEO - Importance Of Meta Descriptions
The meta description is also very important, it works in conjunction with the page title. The page title tells Google and people what the page is about, the description goes into more detail about different sections contained within the page.
Here is an example:
Page title = Joomla On Page SEO
Meta description = Joomla on page SEO breaks down into six sections: Page Titles, Meta Descriptions, Headings, Content, Links/Anchor Text and Image Alt Text/Tiles.
Now you should link the description to the headings, headings range from H1 to H6, I see no reason why any heading should be lower then H3 and that should only be used for side headings on modules. All too many people say there should only be one H1 on a page, if your page title is 'SEO And Web Promotion' there is not only no reason why you cannot have two H1s, but you should have two H1s - H1 = SEO and H1 = Web Promotion.
I personally try to use the page title as my first heading(H1), but sometimes I need to alter that. From the description above the headings are obvious but remember the topic of the page and throw a few 'Joomla On Page SEO' into the mix.
Joomla SEO - Page Headings
Here is a breakdown of possible headings:
H1 = Joomla On Page SEO
H2 = Page Titles For Joomla SEO
H2 = Meta Descriptions - Joomla SEO
H2 = Joomla On Page SEO - Headings
H2 = Good Content To Improve Joomla On Page SEO
H2 = Links and Anchor Text For SEO
H2 = Image alt text - Image Tiles
If you simply use the words from the description you will be lost in the jungle of websites that use those terms. Adding variations and bits of 'Joomla On Page SEO' builds the articles relevance to the topic and bonds together the page title, meta description and headings.
Good Content For Joomla On Page SEO Strength
You need good quality content, everything so far is to point out what the article is about and mapping where parts of the content are, but if the content is naff the rest has been a waste of time. You can get bad content ranked highly but it will quickly start dropping down the listings. The only way to rank highly and stay there is to have good content that people like and link to, content that reads well and can be of use or interest to people.
Good Anchor Text Is Vital For Joomla SEO
Link text(Anchor text) has been the main ranking factor in Google for some time now, especially when it's on another powerful site linking into your site. The internal links on your site are also very important, avoid using the 'read more' and instead use keyword rich text i.e:

Do Not Use Read More As Anchor Text
If your developer has built you a site and it always uses 'Read more' as the anchor text, sack them and hire Dean Marshall Consultancy (that's us). Just because Joomla sets 'Read more' by default that does not mean you should use it.
Think about your menu link text, does it use keywords or are your links 'Services' when they should be 'Joomla Services'. These are not little mistakes they are major issues, a bit here and a bit there might seem unimportant but they are the basics, getting them right will make a big difference to your SEO rankings and Google listings. Get them wrong and you're probably reading this article!
