What's Phase 2?!

Any rigid solid object is extremely challenging for 2D artists to animate because if one stray line isn’t kept perfectly in check, the object will seem to wobble and shift unnaturally.

Even as early as the mid 80’s Disney was using a technique where they would animate a 3D object and then apply a 2D filter to it. This practice could be applied to any solid object a character interacts with: from lanterns a character is holding, to a book (like in Atlantis), or in the most extreme cases Cybernetic parts (like in Treasure Planet).

But 101 Dalmatians was made WAY before the advent of this technology. So how did they do the Cruella car chase sequence at the end of the film?

The answer is so simple I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me sooner:

They just BUILT the models and painted them white with black outlines 🤣

That was the trick. They’re not actually 2D animated, they’re stop motion. They were physical models painted white and filmed on a white background. The black outlines become the lineart lines and they just xeroxed the frame onto an animation cel and painted it like any other 2D animated frame.

That’s how they did it! Isn’t that amazing? It’s such a simple low tech solution but it looks so cool in the final product.

A creature I designed for Subnautica 2: the Hycean!

so the nibbler mango's just kind of come up to you and stare at you, even call out to their pack mates are like "yep can't do anything about this". that is so awesome that they genuinely communicate to the pack. like i noticed it bc of being hunted but even in this circumstance. the bigger mango also recognises it can't attack you in the tadpole and just leaves you alone

the hammerhead is hilarious though. I wonder if each one has a different behaviour? because one of them had rammed my tadpole when i was out of it (maybe it depend on if youre inside of it or not?) but another one was OBSESSED with me it was following me like crazy. so i decided to finally stand still and stare at it. and it just stared back at me. and then it would swim up and rub against the tadpole. and then go back and stare at it again. and then rub up against it. rinse and repeat... i think it was trying to impress the tadpole thinking it was a potential mate ahhahaha that is hilarious and adorable im so in love with this game and constantly more and more impressed with the creature ai!!! wow!!!

one of my favorite things that's happened during my playthrough of Subnautica 2 so far:

this fish, the Marrowbreach, is labelled to be (and upon basic observation, appears to be) very dangerous and aggressive and scary, so a lot of the time spent interacting them is specifically spent avoiding, or trying to escape them. they have a very specific, telegraphed attack where they launch towards the player in a super scary way.

however. i noticed that despite their scary appearance and loud growling noise, they don't actually do much damage when they attack you. and so i thought to myself "am i categorizing this unfamiliar social activity as aggression? am i being reductive towards how this creature actually operates? am i sure it's not just playing with me?"

like. how did you get the impression that you're supposed to kill anything that gets in your way. did we play the same game

i'm so so glad they're just completely removing the player's ability to damage and kill creatures in subnautica 2 in favor of more interesting nonviolent methods (outside of the previously mentioned things) but i fear people who completely miss the point and view the game as something it most definitely is not will be very annoying about it
