Hate James? Peterâs pretty sure the idea itself is impossible. But stillâŚ
Thereâs moments. Peter sags under Siriusâ weight against his shoulder, the laughter barked in his ears, firing off a biting comment concealed as a joke â or otherwise the four of them gathered after an Order meeting, somehow tense and exhausted all at once and the cruelty that comes then is thinly veiled and a nice little scapegoat in the way Peter folds up and takes it and lets Sirius say whatever he needs to make himself feel in control again. And James does nothing or James weakly laughs or James glances away the second Peterâs pained eyes look to his for support and James stares out the window or at the ceiling or the wall just long enough for Peter to give up hope. He does, quickly, because heâs learned: Jamesâll keep letting it happen. Peter doesnât think hate but he thinks coward and suffers the guilt of the thought after and he doesnât ask why because he knows the answer. There are things he does ask, silently,
Am I your project, am I your charity, do I make you feel better about yourself at the end of the day? Is it easier to let someone else love you so you donât even have to try it on yourself, how long do you think I can keep it up?
Peter wants to beg James not to take him for granted, but he knows himself well enough to know that it doesnât matter if he does or not. Where else does Peter have to go? And that trap of one-sided dependence is its own sort of violence heâs not quite sure how to get out of.Â

Friendly as some of the members may be, the Marauders were a notoriously closed unit, thank you very much. The greatest of affection stayed within the four and their greatest fights were contained too â at least, until Lily Evans came along. Itâs not that Peter hates her for butting in, itâs not even that he sees her as stealing his friends. Itâs just how easy it was for her to lay her hooks in someone he cared about and drag them away and okay maybe, yes, there is that deep little kernel of bitterness for her taking so much of James from them. He hates how much of a cliche he is against her, the jealous little peon lurking in the back and wondering why their gushing small talk and gooey eyes werenât enough to hold interest. Even with Sirius, heâs at least worthy of garnering Lily Evanâs famously firey anger. For Peter, he only seems to be worth her pity. Those startling eyes of hers turn on him and itâs like being pinned under a microscope dead set on finding every one of his flaws and then kindly pretending not to see them once theyâve been dragged out into the air. He hates how she makes him feel inadequate, even when sheâs trying to be his friend in that half-assed âat least i triedâ way.Â
âSend Pink for an honesty post on what my muse likes/loves about yours.â
Peterâs got a personality primed to be drawn to stronger ones and weak would be a word entirely Lilyâs antithesis. Even when watching her and James together is an exercise in envy, the two at their best is like observing twin flames made flesh or two fireworks performing a waltz or some other weird, sappy metaphor. She shines just as bright alone too and thatâs when Peter almost wishes he was brave enough to respond to those occasional attempts to connection instead of curling back into himself â at least she tries, vibrant and entirely out of his league as she is. Lily seems entirely free of the shackles of self-awareness that hold Peter back and sometimes he watches her weaving her magic with others just in the hopes that somewhere along the way he can mimic whatever it is that makes her so effortless in captivating an audience. Does she know how easy she stuns, even without magic? She has to know, all beautiful girls do, but sheâs so comfortable within that beauty itâs like she barely notices itâs there. Peter can comprehend her just as little as he could comprehend what it must be like to be her, but imagination never punishes the daydreamer, even for something as badweirdwrong as imagining being your best mateâs girl.Â
More than anything else currently in game, Peter is on edge. There are a few in the Order who consider the recent dip in Death Eater activity a good sign but he knows better. No group like the Death Eaters would go down easy, just slipping away into the night -- theyâre planning something. Heâs not nearly as religious as his parents, but Peter hopes to God the Order will be ready when it comes to a head and canât help the fear that they wonât. Heâs skittish, even jumpier than usual, visibly worn out from too many late nights when that paranoia keeps him from sleeping. His friendâs jokes are wearing at him more and more and all he wants is to for someone recognize just how high the stakes of the situation theyâve gotten themselves into are.Â
What is their current goal/focus?
Peter is starting to focus less on winning the war, beginning that shift towards being more concerned with surviving it. He looks around him and sees other Order members that donât seem near as worried as he is and heâs flip-flopping between marking it down to his own anxious mind or the people around him simply not taking things seriously enough, starting to get sloppy. His goal is to keep himself and those very select few heâs close to safe, and collecting as much information as he possibly can, both for the Order and himself. If the Order isnât going to be prepared for whatever is coming, Pete knows he has to be.
What do you want to happen right now (short term development)?
Start examining his relationships! With the Marauders, Peter is stuck in limbo between his desire to keep them as close to how he remembers them in their Hogwarts days and his instinctive drive to pull away from the increasing baleful remarks and tired brushings-off from three boys just as stressed as he is, even if Peter canât see (or perhaps tolerate) the ways they express it. The most important thing here is what Peter witnesses or hears, whether it be purposefully in front of him or snatches of things he was never supposed to be privy to, and how those things cement his ideas of what direction each of the Marauders is going (and if theyâre going away from him, all the while towards each other).Â
Outside the Marauders is a group of people entirely familiar and unfamiliar to him at the same time. They know each other by virtue of proximity and vague school memories, but they donât know each other -- in a few cases, like Lily (via her closeness to the Marauders) or Hestia (via the unpredictable factors that have brought her into his life), the mystery is peppered with the bits of information heâs managed to collect over time, but with no one quite yet has the ice been entirely broken (for better or worse). Iâm looking forward to necessity pushing these particular pairings together and developing a more concrete notion of how exactly they and Pete will fit into each otherâs lives over the next few weeks.

Even if youâre not close to Pete, it doesnât really require a lot of mental gymnastics to come to the conclusion that heâs a virgin â the classic sort that never really left preteen awkwardness behind. Heâs far from flirtatious, has never even strolled in the general neighborhood of suave, and broadly considers the idea of feeling sexy a distant far off country he will likely never visit. Itâs all the more evident when at least two of his closest friends are near-polar opposites to that, but this line of thinking will only ever lead Peter on into the problem of the other thing.Â
The other thing does not have a formal name because Peter doesnât give it a name because heâd really prefer not to think about it that hard; the undercurrent to his crush idolization of James for at least four years of their adolescence, the fact he remembers that one drunken on-a-dare kiss Sirius planted on him at school with so much detail, or the reasoning behind why he makes a fool out of himself in front of Edgar Bones just as easily as he does in front of Amelia. Nah, he has enough trouble with the so-called âfairer sexâ to consciously add the other thing into the equation, so it stays packed away to confront later on when the time is right, which more than likely, it will never be.Â

At the swinginâ party down the line
Their bubble of warmth insulated them from both the party and the weather. James felt himself relax in Peterâs company. There was a thread of commonality between them; always had been. That was the main reason why James had asked Pete, all those years ago, to be mates. Well, that and the fact Peter could cast a wicked tripping hex.Â
Peter looked good when he smiled. But the mention of Sirius sent his eyes skittering away, and Jamesâ expression faltered. Glancing out over the park, he shifted his weight uncomfortably. âYou should,â he replied, injecting some joviality into his tone. James nudged Peterâs side and gave him a warm smile. âNo, mate, I know. Suppose itâs better than doing something boring like knitting. Or that muggle paper folding thing. Whatâs it called?â
Transparent, probably, this change in topic. But it was certainly better than edging towards the yawning abyss that was Peter and Siriusâ relationship. James had just escaped one imminent storm: he really didnât feel like clattering headfirst into another one.Â
James watched Peter fidget with his fingers. There was an edginess to him, now that James thought about it. There was something prickly in his quiet, firm expression; the slight shake in his hands. The bandages were a bit sooty, as if heâd forgotten to change them, and Peterâs middle and forefingers were cigarette-worn, an aftertaste of lonely nights and endless watches. All the watches were necessary â they were never going to get ahead if they didnât spend all those evenings lurking about Death Eater hidey-holes. But, then again, the shadows could do things to you. Or so heâd heard; James preferred to ignore the oppressive blackness of an empty apartment, with only a subtle lumos for company, for as much as possible. He knew the tangibility of Dark magic. It came upon you like a silent tide. Fathomless.
âYeah.â James cleared his throat and pushed his glasses up. They glanced at each other; James held their gaze for a beat longer than usual. âYou alright, Peter?â He hadnât meant for his voice to dip in such a confidential manner, but something slipped between them, a flicker of hurt that at times accompanied Peter like a second shadow. âI meanâŚâ James rubbed his lips together, thinking. âThat thing with Fenwick last month â I wouldnât blame you for feeling on edge. As you said, everyoneâs a bit wired. Canât blame a habit if it calms you down.â An olive branch: âDâyou want me to get you a smoke? I donât mind.â
Peter was caught somewhere between disappointment and poignant relief; was it really better for James to have said anything approaching recognizing the jagged edges of he and Siriusâ relationship? Friendship, Peter was quick to correct himself, automatic and a little guilty. But it wouldnât have been like James to say a word against Sirius, would it? They were too desperately intertwined for that, itâd be like James slicing away and criticizing a piece of his own flesh. Maybe Remus didnât see it yet, maybe even they werenât clearheaded enough to recognize it in themselves, but Peter saw -- Peter always saw. He didnât need to be a Legilimens to understand what lay behind those lingering looks. No, Sirius would always rank higher in James Potterâs priorities than him and Peter told himself he was used to it, no matter how many times these small reminders chaffed against an already permanently raw hurt.Â
Still. A change of subject was its own mercy, wasnât it?Â
âOrigami,â Peter replied after a beat, âI think.â The effort of recalling the word brought back a memory; sitting under a Christmas tree, the chatter of gathered family and spark popping harmlessly out of the fireplace onto a charmed carpet. âOne of my cousins was obsessed with it. Da got a big book of patterns for her Christmas one year, dogs nâ swans nâ shit. Some of âem even glided without magic. Real neat.â Coming out of his mouth, he realized how mundane the whole thing sounded, as if James was actually interested in hearing about the hobbies of some kid heâd never met and Peter felt the back of his neck flushing red in embarrassment on Jamesâ behalf, cheeks hot as he was quick to add, âFor muggle stuff, I mean.âÂ
It was another chafe. Thereâs a reason he prefers Sirius to you. Jamesâ eyes were heavy on him and he could feel the flush only worsening, a patchy ruddiness to his face that he could no longer blame of the nippiness of the weather. That was the cinch of it all, his friends were easy to read when they were tied up in their own little worlds, invested entirely in themselves but Peter could only guess what James saw when his focus was on him, though his mind was quick to offer several possible fill-in-the-blanks, each more disdainful than the last. Pitying -- that was the word for that gaze. Peter didnât mean to meet Jamesâ eyes, but he found it impossible to break away from them once he had. The other boyâs question was an unexpected one and it showed in Peterâs rapid blink, semiconsciously straightening his spine as if that characteristic curve in his posture was a warning sign flashing in Jamesâ face. He knew the correction was useless the moment he did it, if anything it only justified the question. But the question... wasnât that exactly the kind of thing Peter wanted to hear? Interest? Concern? Enough attention paid for James to realize, no, he wasnât alright? The mention of Fenwick was what it took for him to be able jerk his eyes away back down to his trainers, but Peter could feel himself leaning towards James even as he did it.Â
He could say yes. He wanted to, desperately. But that line of thinking led too easily to James getting lost inside the crush of the party again, getting wrapped up in the countless people lining up for the attention he was giving Peter now, taking all his warmth and magic with him and leaving Peter out in the cold while he sat and waited and waited until the windows went dark and it was time to go home, back to the empty flat with more cigarettes and more moments of panicking over fleeting visions of Death Eaterâs masks pressed against his windows. âDonât worry about it. Mâalright,â he finally said, âLike yâsaid, everyoneâs a bit wired.â Peter chanced a look at Jamesâ face again, quiet and hesitant, âBut I mean.. what about you, Prongs? Are you.. okay?âÂ
NICKNAME. Pete, Wormtail, Wormy, Dougie (but very specifically only by certain aunts)
BIRTHDAY. Â May 21st, 1960
GENDER. Cisgender male
SEXUALITY. Questioning (bisexual)
RELATIONSHIP STATUS. Single
SPOKEN LANGUAGES. English, some poor Latin retention from Hogwarts
ACCENT. All Sheffield, dropping his hâs, making his uâs into uhâs, contorting vowels and dropping plurals, turning behind into be-yind. Pete himself tends to insert plenty of speech breaks, liberally peppered with filler words (all those good ums and ahs), though his sentences tend to blur together rather than having an audible period/pause after every idea. Peterâs a notorious mumbler, always checking himself to try and chin up and speak a little more defined so he and his conversational partner donât have to play the painful âcan you repeat that?â game.
BIRTHPLACE. Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England
ASTROLOGICAL SIGN. Taurus/Gemini cusp. One of the Earth signs, Taurus has a reputation for being a grounded sign, less hotheaded and more reliable and practical than others. A Taurus can be committed to the point of stubbornness and often finds fulfillment in utility. However, Taurus is very susceptible to possessiveness and insecurity and is very resistant to sudden change; criticism hits hard and when a Taurus is in an unhealthy mental state, a great majority of their emotions can be reliant on the people they are surrounded by. What a Taurus wants more than anything is stability and purpose; without these things, the ground feels shaky underneath their feet and can send them spiraling to find a way to fulfill those needs.
EX-HOGWARTS HOUSE. Gryffindor
PATRONUS. Brown rat
BOGGART. An ever changing beast thatâs seen many variations. The current most popular switches between two variations of failure -- one in failing in his duty to the Order and Albus Dumbledore himself dishonorably discharging him, the other in facing the rest of the Marauders and finding that none of them remember him. Had Pete been exposed circa his second year at Hogwarts, it would have likely been Minerva Mcgonagall (brilliant, impatient, terrifying).Â
BLOOD STATUS. Pureblood
ALLIED WITH. Order of the Phoenix
FACECLAIM. Charlie Heaton
002. PHYSICAL TRAITS.
HAIR COLOUR & STYLE. Ashy brown, itâs thin but thereâs a lot of it, which makes tangling a nightmare if he doesnât stay on top of it. The current style is grown out of a childhood bowl cut and the now-longer layers tend to piece together around his face and over his eyes. Peter hates how it looks tucked behind his ears too much to keep it out of the way like that, leading to frequent little jerky movements of his head intended to force his hair back into place for a few minutes at a time. The gesture is hardly a graceful one and sometimes he doesnât bother; all the easier to hide behind.
EYE COLOUR. Dark brown
COMPLEXION. Pale, sunburns at the drop of a hat
ETHNICITY. Caucasian
HEIGHT. 1.71 m (5â˛6 ft)
PHYSIQUE. Skinny in the way any post-adolescent boy retaining his metabolism is, a little soft in the stomach where late night stress snacking is just beginning to catch up with him. Narrow shoulders, lines more round than sharp, a body used to having to look up to people.
TATTOOS. N/A
PIERCINGS. N/A
CLOTHING & STYLE. Lots of denim, plenty of layers (jackets, jumpers, undershirts, even when itâs warmer out), single-minded dedication to old white trainers that are worn until the bottoms run through. An especially well loved Gryffindor jumper that gets the most use out of all of them. Brown beanies tugged down over red-tipped ears, thick woolen socks with warming threads sewn into the toes. Henley shirts, red or navy and usually with a flannel thrown over the top. A preference for long sleeves and full length pants that suggests a lack of desire to shown off oneâs body â in fact, quite the opposite.
MANNERISMS. Darting eyes hopping between every member of a conversation and a few on the outside, not missing anything. Shoulders hunched up around the ears, a laugh that hesitates, always looking for someone elseâs laughter to confirm that itâs warranted. Rubbing hands together in the cold, shifting from foot foot when idle, tucking chin close to chest and curling in on himself. Thumbing repetitively at the filter of a cigarette, always blowing smoke down instead of out. Grabbing at items in his pocket and squeezing them tight. Flinching instinctively when someone approaches too fast, even if that someone is a friend.
HABITS. A nervous fidgeter, all leg bouncing and picking at nails until his cuticles are raw, barely conscious heâs doing it. A semi-conscious chewer too; plastic spoons and straws tend to get caught up in his mouth for an hour after heâs done with them, same with the ends of zippers or the tops of pens. Classic stress eater, often climbing out of bed late at night to dig a snack out of the fridge or from under his bed. Peter drinks milk from of the carton and eats ice cream out of the tub; spoons macaroni into his mouth from the pot rather than into a bowl first and snatches bacon right from the pan, absentmindedly sucking his fingers clean after. His friends are more than used to that specific longing look that means he wants something from your plate but is too polite to ask for it. Pete hums constantly when heâs alone (or thinks he is), especially in the shower. Kicks off his shoes and tucks his feet up to his chest on big enough chairs and couches, never unties the laces on his trainers. Tends to make faces when he makes eye contact with himself a mirror. Prefers to sleep in his Animagus form if itâs safe enough that no one isnât in the know will burst into his bedroom. After heâs been standing for more than ten minutes at a time, he starts leaning into things: doorframes, walls, tables, Remus...
HOBBIES & INTERESTS. Novels, particularly sci-fi. Any kind of new music, muggle and wizard bands alike. Some light art, he doesnât credit himself with being anything but a doodler but heâs actually got an eye for landscapes and buildings. Thereâs a newly acquired interest in gardening thatâs just recently begun to creep in there as well.Â
INSECURITIES. Hoo boy.. his physicality: what he looks like, what his strengths are (or more specifically, arenât. Heâs well aware he isnât exactly toned). His learning ability: everything he struggled to retain in school, how much longer it takes him to pick up most new magic compared to his peers. His personality: how awkward he is at conversation or cracking jokes, how boring he can physically hear himself being every time he talks to another person, how little he has to say about himself thatâs interesting or engaging. His roots: entirely unremarkable, the kind of generic that no one remembers. His friends: how easy it would be for them to drop him, how many other vastly more interesting, funny, charming people there are that could take his place, how much more dedicated he fears they are to each other compared to him. Himself in comparison to everyone around him: encompassing all of these previous fears.
MBTI TYPE. ISFP; introverted, sensing, feeling, percieving. Â
ENNEAGRAM TYPE. Type Two - The Helper
MORAL ALIGNMENT. True Neutral
TEMPERAMENT. Melancholic
DEADLY SIN. Sloth
004. THIS OR THAT.
INTROVERT OR EXTROVERT?
OPTIMIST OR PESSIMIST?
LEADER OR FOLLOWER?
CONFIDENT OR SELF-CONSCIOUS?
CAUTIOUS OR CARELESS?
PASSIONATE OR APATHETIC?
BOOK SMARTS OR STREET SMARTS?
COMPLIMENTS OR INSULTS?
COLD HANDS OR WARM HEART?
005. ASSOCIATIONS.
COLOURS. Washed out colors; pale reds and oranges and piney greens like a chilly landscape under late autumn rain. Dusty brown, like cooking chocolate or dead leaves. The dingey off-white of something well-worn. Once blazing scarlet and gold, sported long after the brilliance of the color has faded. The translucent blue of shallow veins.
SCENT. Wet wool, dusty books, lived in skin and no cologne, tobacco lingering in hair from his and Siriusâ cigarettes, ash in a fireplace the morning after. Rich earth, a smell like the word âverdantâ, like Hestia in the greenhouse.
TASTE. A Pepper-Up potion on a cold day, a rolled up slice of plain wheat bread for a meal while on watch, leftovers just a little off from one too many reheating charms, the burn of alcohol forced down, a meaningless kiss from years ago, joining the rest he can count on one hand.
SOUND. Chaotic conversation while playing observer in the Common Room, all laughter and chatter and friendly lobbed insults. His motherâs favorite songs from the 50â˛s playing every Sunday morning, the church bells on the walk through town. The confident lilt of Jamesâ voice, the steady cadence of Remusâ. Click, pressing play on his Walkman, different from the click-sht of a lighter. A hard sniff, the choked noise of holding back louder tears. The shuffling of sheets and the squeak of mattress coils in a quiet room late at night, turning over and over trying to find a comfortable spot.
MAGIC. Convenience, practicality, repetition. Sneaking off to drill himself again and again until it finally sticks. The giddy rush of that first Patronus, the sheer triumph of that first transformation. Three unregistered Animagi, a law worth breaking, the boy worth breaking it for.
WEATHER. Autumn, cool and overcast. Curling up on the couch in sun beams sneaking through the window, the most satisfying naps he can remember. Dead leaves crunching underfoot walking through the courtyard, going out of his way to step on them. Summer, always a little damp under long sleeves, dizzy and overheated. The heaviness in spring air when rain is on the horizon.
FEELING. Anticipation, queasy anxiety, wanting to reach out and holding back instead. The dread of approaching a classroom without assigned work ready, the exhilaration of cheering on the winning team, the sensation of always having to walk a little faster to keep up. The darker pleasure of seeing someone else be the butt of the joke. The guilty undercurrent of worry watching a close friend laughing with someone else. The guiltier undercurrent of resentment. Wanting. Doubting. Reminiscing. A distant crush from childhood that never quite goes away. The comfort of being touched by someone you care about, an arm around the shoulders, a hand ruffling your hair. The old fears that only get bigger â of not being enough, of never having been enough.
MEMORY. Learning to ride a bike and a broom the same summer, coughing a fit at his first cigarette. Nervously wiping hands on his trousers before shaking Remusâ hand, their first time on the Hogwarts Express. Watching James on the Quidditch Pitch, like trying to stare head-on at the sun. One period of grace when even Sirius felt like a close friend, when everything was right, when school never needed to end.Â
TOUCH. Damp earth clinging to the soles of bare feet, goosebumps on bare skin. Sliding on a jumper with nothing underneath. Â Pale grey and soft to the touch, a tiny heart trembling under thin skin. Chocolate Frogs melting onto finger tips. Sirius giving him a joking pinch to the cheek, a hard clap on the back, the pain sore and sweet all at once.

âThere are loads of things to celebrate.â Sirius placed the spare bottle down on the couch beside Peter before grabbing the discarded duffel and plopping it atop the coffee table. âBeing alive is a decent start. Other people being alive is a decent continuation.â He began absentmindedly sorting through it, not looking for anything in particular but making a show of pulling out half a dozen shirts and three different pairs of dark jeans. A bag full of jewelry soon followed, and that was all it took for Peterâs den to go from a comfortable reading place to an area dominated by things that Sirius had discarded. Sirius stood amongst them, hand propped on his hip as he contemplated each article individually and without really seeing it.Â
âPersonally, Iâll be celebrating the fact that thereâs a party. Itâs been too damn long without something like this. Everyone needs to get out of the house â and that includes you. Iâm sure youâve got something tucked away thatâs worthy of a careless night.âÂ
Finally, Sirius glanced at Peter, and the sight made him frown. Peter was perfect suited for a night in, and that would not do. âGood thing I came along then, isnât it? Keep thinking that only birds dress up, and youâll never have one dressing you down. Really, Pete, how have you made it so far?â It wasnât a fair question, largely because Peterâs worth had never been dependent upon fashion. Peter was built to discover and establish, and that was priceless to the Order. It just meant precious little to Sirius, who was far more interested in courting death than trying to outrun it.Â
As the minutes ticked past and more and more clothing flew out of Siriusâ duffel and onto Peterâs furniture, it became more and more apparent that this wasnât a fluke and it was his fireplace the other boy had intended to Floo into. Being alive was a good start. Other people being alive.. well, Peter couldnât think of them without thinking of those who werenât in such fortunate condition. All the hush and secrecy, the nervous pouring over paper headlines, the constant looking over their shoulders -- these habits were not results of people continuing living. It was not a thought Peter wanted to entertain, but he could hardly shake it any more than he could shoot back something to match one of Siriusâ dazzling quips.
A party to celebrate partying, well. That carried much less horror hidden under the table. âI get out plenty.â Peter protested weakly, finally setting his book down on top of one pair of Siriusâ jeans. In a matter of a few short moments, Sirius had managed to command the entire room with such a tight grip Peter almost felt like he was trespassing in his own space as he pushed off the couch and stepped to stand next to him in the middle of his sea of clothing.Â
But no matter what the reason, Sirius was there, heâd chosen to come to Peter specifically and he couldnât help a small trill of pleasure low in his stomach at the fact, plucking up a black shirt with large enough openings for sleeves it was impossible to tell where exactly oneâs head was intended to go. âIsnât it supposed to snow tonight?â He fingered the hem of the shirt; old cotton, worn and soft, that perfect pairing of effortless cool Sirius seemed to exude. There was something clever to say here, something about without Sirius at least Peter wouldnât freeze before he even got to party.Â
For all of Peterâs careful conversation, James could feel the question on the tip of his tongue. Itâd probably start with, hey, James, why are you, and end with, out here with me? Truth was, he didnât really feel like explaining himself to anyone at the moment. It felt like heâd spent the better part of the evening explaining himself in one bloody way or another. No, far better to just be out here, in the cold quiet with Peter shivering beside him, than devolve into some drivel about Lily. Thatâd probably just make my mood worse.
Shooting Peter a broad grin, James settled back against the railing. A clipped breeze skirted along the darkening building, bringing with it the distant sound of muggle traffic and some pounding music half a block away. In a neighborhood like this, finding some peace and quiet was a task. Fortunately for him, Peter seemed particularly adept at squirreling out those niches where your bones could settle and your thoughts didnât seem to press against the inside of your skull. After the bedlam of the party, the smothered world outside made his ears ring.
âSounds like we both do,â James replied kindly. He wrinkled his nose in thought, pictured the bubble of warmth in his fingertips, and concentrated on producing the charm. Almost instantly, as if they were huddled once more outside the tall, stone walls of Hogwarts, skiving off Transfiguration or en route to detention, the warming charm flickered between them, and, with a sensation not unlike slipping into a bath, the spell gathered and curled beneath their skin. Opening his eyes, James pushed his glasses up his nose and winked at Peter. âStill got it, Pete. McGonagall could never say I didnât pay attention in class.â
The mention of smoking prompted him to make a face. âDonât have any, Iâm afraid. You could ask Sirius, though. Heâs gallivanting around with a pack he nicked from Meadowes, the idiot.â James nudged Peterâs elbow, a teasing edge to his tone. âYou smoke too much, mate. Youâll end up like Lily if youâre not careful.â
Peter silently watched him cast the wordless charm, fixated on Jamesâ face and the little crinkle of focus between his brows, his fists tightening in his pockets even as it happened and the relief welled up from his half-frozen toes to the top of his head -- a warm flush that cozied up indulgently against them like an house cat by a fire. It was enough to spark a short huff of pleased laughter from the smaller boy, âGood timing,â Peter murmured gratefully as the weather made good on what it had been threatening all day, the next gust of wind bearing a flurry of white along with it, his eyes drawn to a solitary flake of snow as it merged into the edges of Jamesâ magic and melted away in the newly temperate bubble the two huddled together in.
At the mention of Sirius, the smile flickered and faded away entirely. âIf I see âem, Iâll ask.â He wouldnât. Couldnât. Heâd practically run from Sirius at the first chance; itâd be best not to see him until tomorrow when the other hopefully wouldnât remember anything beyond the usual disappointment. Given the drinks Sirius had been throwing back, Peter thought privately, it wasnât likely Sirius would remember anything. He caught himself halfway to chewing at his nail again just at the picture.Â
âCanât be too bad a way to end up. Gotta keep mâself occupied somehow, yâknow?â He sheepishly held up his hand, showing off the frayed bandages wrapped around three of his finger tips before cramming it in his jacket again. The picking was a bad habit that was hard to break, one Peterâd had since before heâd even stepped onto the train at Kingâs Cross and his mother had always despaired over. Ugly habit.
âPlus, itâs something to do when Iâm on watch. Betterân just sitting there. You know how it gets? Just staring and watching people and getting wound up. Least if Iâm lighting up..â

Sirius was well known for being unpredictable, and sometimes that meant swooping through the fireplace in a stage of unannounced mania with two bottles of liquor and a duffle bag tossed over one shoulder. If it was possible to become accustomed to such a hurricane, then Peter of all people should have come to expect the unexpected.Â
âWorms!â Sirius had barked the syllable before ever glancing around the den, and he found Peter sitting on the couch only a few meters away. âCâmon, mate. You should be getting ready. Weâve got a party tonight, and I canât let you show up looking like youâve just rolled off the couch, or out of bed, or any other mundane activity. Itâs a night to celebrate, Pete. Now letâs get you looking happy.â He tossed his duffle aside, full of clothes (and proof that Sirius himself had shown up entirely unprepared to party himself, save for the shot heâd taken just before sprinting to the Floo.)Â
With a flourish, he clapped his hands and came to stand just before Peter. âWhat were you thinking of wearing? Jumpers are out of the question.â A strong claim, given the chill of the wind beating against the windows. Nevertheless, Sirius looked, well, serious, even as he pressed one of the bottles against Peterâs chest, eyebrow cocked expectantly.Â
Thankfully it wasnât a Death Eater bursting into Peterâs living room, but fuck if it wasnât just as sudden and terrifying -- Peterâs heart jumping in his throat even as he recognized Sirius all at once, eyes darting to follow the chucked duffel before returning to his friendâs face. There was an expression there toying with being solemn, still quivering with possibility the way the other boy always was. That was the thing about Sirius, one of many things Peter could never compete with: that look in his eyes promising that as dangerous as it might be to place yourself in his hands, boredom was an impossible result. It was tempting and intimidating all at once. Right then, it just made it even more impossible for Peter to speak.
âWhatâre we celebrating exactly?â He managed to ask, book clasped in both hands and held a few inches in front of his chest like a ineffective shield. It was a genuine query as much as it was a thoughtlessly blurted response; the past few weeks of strained monotony for the Order didnât exactly put one in the partying mood, but Peter supposed again that that was probably the point. For people like Sirius, staying still felt more like drowning.Â
âI havenât really... planned out a wardrobe.â His lower lip pouted out into a small frown as he examined the label of the bottle Sirius pressed to his chest, brows furrowing, already tasting a future bad decision. âWhatâs wrong with a jumper?â Peter wanted to ask, but doubtless there was a whole list of things wrong he just wasnât privy to. More questions rolled by; whereâs Prongs and Moony?, why are you here with me?, making way for safer statement - â..Isnât it more girls that dress up for these things?âÂ

If anyone twigged James was sort-of not-really escaping a party, heâd never live it down. As such, he managed to shove his way through the crowd with a volley of how are you, and alright? before he closed the front door behind him. The hot press of bodies lingered on his skin. He half imagined he could hear Lilyâs loud conversation mingling with Marleneâs braying laughter â or was that Sirius and Remus? James closed his eyes briefly and leaned his head against the chipped paint, feeling his bones resettle.
The threat of snow tasted bitter in the air. Dark had fallen like a shroud over the council estate, the grey buildings illuminated only by orange streetlights or the lingering lavender on the horizon. Shuddering, James let go of the doorknob behind him and zipped up his leather jacket, then shoved his hands in his pockets. Just a few minutes, he thought. Then Iâll go in and face the music.
Merlin. That was something he could do without.
Thinking miserably about Lilyâs flashing argument, James pushed off from the door. The concrete balcony ran the length of the building, and overlooked the squalid park opposite. Hunching his shoulders against the cold, he almost missed the figure leaning against the railing a couple of doors down. James paused and narrowed his eyes. Then the figure looked over, and he relaxed into a grin.
âHullo, Pete.â James came over to lean back against the railing. The low light did little for Peterâs features, which were shadowed and, as they had been lately, slightly distant. It occurred to James that Peter probably wanted some time alone, but he could have some time alone with James. Thatâd sort him out.
James met Peterâs gaze and smiled warmly. He glanced off into the darkness behind him. âBit cold out. Want me to do you a warming charm?â
It wasnât the first time Peter had snuck out of the crush; there was always a pattern to his coming to these kind of events -- scouting out the safe places, cataloging each room, inevitably creeping past partygoers to find those few minutes of relief. Heâd seen exactly where heâd end up since heâd first mounted the Prewettâs stairs with Siriusâ arm slung round his shoulders, the other a heavy weight against his smaller frame, warm and loose from the alcohol heâd already persuaded Peter to gulp a few mouthfuls down of as well.Â
It was a foolâs hope that they would stay that way for long -- Peter knew that, why the hell had he let himself get suckered in again so easy? Siriusâ good mood had only soured as the night had gone on and Peter had done the only thing he could: make himself scarce in the hopes of avoiding the storm entirely. Or maybe just remove himself as the cause of it.
After that, the cold was a welcome relief. Peter had stepped out into the ashen night with his arms wrapped around his midsection, pressing his forehead into the icy brick and letting it leech the warmth and dizziness out of him all at once, give him something else to think about than the persistent nausea that wasnât entirely liquor-based in nature.Â
The Prewettâs Silencing Charms had kept the balcony shrouded in silence and the sound of the door opening and closing was deafening as a result; Peterâs head snapped up from where heâd been studying the street, teeth set in his thumbnail, to see who it would be this time to catch him on his own -- skulking, sneaking away, alone as always, Pettigrew is. Except -Â
â- James.â The name was a held breath finally released, soft, relieved. How could he not be relieved when he saw him? It was more automatic than breathing; Peter could almost be mad at himself for how predictable the feeling was. âCould share,â he offered a nervous ghost of the smile back, glancing over Jamesâ body and pulling his jacket tighter around himself. âI mean - yâlook like you might need it more.â He hesitated, swallowed down the question of why James wasnât back in the crowded apartment, â..But if I bum a cig off you, it might get the job done all the same.âÂ
Hestia sat at the corner of the room, watching everyone interact. She felt guilty, knowing that they were going behind Alastorâs back. As she watched the tension-free bodies of the Prewett twins, the quiet words and smiles exchanged by the Longbottoms at the other corner of the room, she finally felt that coming hereâand not watching the windows of headquarters for the next thing to happenâwas the right thing to do.
She cradled the joint Dorcas had given her earlier, rolling it around in one hand, flicking at a lighter with the other. Hestia felt rather than saw someone sit next to her on the couch. Thatâs my cue, she thought. Lighting up the joint, she brought it to her lips and breathed in, the familiar smell and taste a comfort in itself. âHey,â she said, turning her head to say face the person whoâd just arrived.
There was something invigorating about finally having people taking up what had once been all gathering dust and increasingly more irritable Order members, but all the same, Peter couldnât ignore the queasiness making waves in his stomach at the combination of sweat and smoke choking up the air, clinging to his lone beer like a lifeline as he skirted the outside edges of the party. It made some sort of sense to find Hestia at the end of it, perched on the couch by herself, and in the end he found himself staring more at the empty spot next to her for what could have been seconds or several excruciating minutes hovering on the edge of stepping forwards. This wasnât quite their normal place, was it? Far from it. There was that unreasonable fear in the back of his mind, wondering if approaching her here would break some kind of unwritten rule between the two of them that had kept her from brushing him off thus far.Â
But heâd lost Sirius only twenty minutes in. James was equally absent and Remus -- well, Peter wouldnât be surprised if Remus had disappeared with either of them. Hestia was mercifully unmoving, lighter sparking in her hand and Peter sucked in a deep breath for fortification, immediately regretting it when he got a lungful of mixed perfumes that made his stomach twist anew. Fortune favors the brave, right? The coils under couch cushions were old and unwilling to bear much weight and Peter ended up sinking much deeper into the empty seat than expected, wobbling back into steadiness with at least only a mildly awkward splay of his arms as he grabbed one of the arms for balance. Just keep going. Say something clever.Â
