the only peace she has is finnick, the only peace she NEEDS is finnick. but he’s been pulled away from her side for meetings and secrets she isn’t allowed to know, deemed TOO FRAGILE, TOO UNSTABLE. it would annoy her if it didn’t leave her so anxious, being kept away from him for even a short while. crawls under her skin ( still pale and bruised and paper thin ) and makes her hands tremble and and twist. it’s too tempting to curl up somewhere deep inside herself during these moments, so she’s grateful to have a friendly, SWEET FACE to focus upon. annie smiles, a brief flutter across her lips, before her head bows, eyes falling upon the iv stuck into her arm. her fingertips trace a PATTERN in the rough fabric of her hospital blanket, the dips and swirls of an ocean wave. ‘ — no one seems to ever slow down here. though i guess they can’t afford to. ’

she’d heard all the stories ( whispers, mostly, katniss had done their best to keep the more horrific details from reaching their sister’s ears, with varying levels of success ), knew beforehand what waited in the infirmary. she hadn’t been allowed to see peeta ( she suspected katniss had had a hand in that too, another attempt to shield her from the worst of it all ), but the other recent rescuees were fair game -- and even if they hadn’t been, she’d have found some way to help regardless.
“ pleasure’s all mine. ” the adjustment couldn’t have been an easy one ( for either of them ), so keeping her company just seemed like the most sensical thing to do at the moment. she knew too well what being alone was like, no point in making anyone else suffer through that. fortunate, that she had some ever-elusive free time, if it could be called that -- her shift was up in half an hour, but things were quiet today, so it might as well have been. “ do you need anything else? ”
