Narcissa took a step back, dropping the knife softly by her side, but Alice couldn’t take her eyes away from the body. It lay there, open and bleeding, an invitation that Alice wasn’t sure she should accept.
The cut had been clean—the wound ran the length of the stomach like a gaping, horrific mouth waiting to be kissed. Sinews and strings of flesh stretched across the sides; cardinal teeth of a godless smile.
“Go on.” Narcissa’s voice drew Alice’s attention back to her. She smiled softly. “Eat.”
Alice was nothing if not resilient. She wanted Narcissa, and she wanted to be part of her life. And that meant accepting Narcissa, all of her, including the more… unconventional parts. A family tradition that Narcissa had explained to her mere days ago.
So she braced her hands on both sides of the bleeding smile, and tore apart her last shreds of sanity.
