9/26/25 Merzouga, Morocco
I see now, the path of this trip has been a gradual regression back in time. From the modern city of Casablance, to the the city of Tangier with its colonial past, to Fez with it's medieval tanneries and sprawling medina, now to the ancient mud dwellings of Ait Benhaddou. Each place feeling older, by leaps. And when I realized this, and understood the path I was on, it was obvious my next step had to be Merzouga, the edge of the Sahara.
9/22/25 Tamnougalt, Morocco
A very light desert rain this evening brought a gorgeous rainbow over the town of Tamnougalt. I went up on the roof of my hotel — climbing a rickety wooden ladder to get to the very peak — and took this shot while the wind tried to blow me away. The town is a date palm oasis along the Draa River and mostly made of mud (why it blends so nicely with the landscape). And my hotel too, is made of mud, though it has electricity and plumbing and is quite beautiful.

Two young women met while walking through a farming area in Agdz, Morocco. Initially, I passed them on my walk, noting their beautiful costumes and wishing I could photograph them. They seemed to be out taking taking camera phone photos of each other. When I passed them a second time while returning to my hotel, they indicated that they wanted to take pictures with me! I felt very exotic. After taking a picture with each of them, they consented to my request to photograph them in return. What an opportunity!

An ancient Berber fortress made mostly of mud and straw.
9/14/25 Atlas Mountains and the Ounila Valley
Today I piccked up my rental car at the Marrakech airport and drove southeast, through the Atlas Mountains and Ounila Valley, to Ait Benhaddou.
