Katabuchi: Well, animation is not a genre but a technique in my mind, a mean to represent things and make movies, and I think In a Corner and Your Name are not the same kind of movie. So even if there are some similarities, I feel like most of it is quite different, hence I think the audience is not the same either. But the fact that different kind of movies emerge like this is a good thing for Japanese animation in my mind.

I think it’s safe to say that Welcome to the Ballroom is the underdog of this season. Before we go down that path, let’s be totally and completely fair: this show is my darling of the season. I remember sitting the panel for the show at Anime Expo (as featured in the first three posts of this series, go check it out), sick with a fever. But as soon as I laid eyes on the preview a miraculous healing took place – to say I am biased is a polite understatement at best.

Monkey Punch: I didn't have much in mind for Fujiko originally, but I wanted a strong character who contrasted with Lupin... who could be seen as going against him, too. But I didn't really have much in mind other than that... so every time she appeared, she changed a bit, didn't she? (laughs)

Before I came to Japan, I had already decided to try to be involved in the production of Naruto. Fortunately, Zhu Xiao, proprietor of Candybox, had worked for Studio Pierrot and had a good relationship with them, and we was gradually able to hand me cuts to work on for Naruto. Maybe it was because I had been copying Kishimoto’s style, but I got used to it very quickly. At the same time, it was my dream to meet Hiroyuki Yamashita for the longest time. Then I got the chance my last day working at Candybox. From there, Yamashita sent me an invitation to join the production staff. So that’s how I joined team Naruto.

Suemitsu: There’s a scene in the first episode where Tatara was given a DVD from Tamaki and was faced with the calls of “Look at me” coming from all of the dancer’s souls. In the source material, a big and unique appeal of manga comes from showing through pictures, but as I wrote the anime screenplay I felt like I wanted to deliver a portrayal that would be unique to anime...
