"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
Letting out a little chuckle, she reached out to ruffle the creature’s crest.
“’course you can. I’ve got enough junk as it is. Don’t need to keep it all to myself, I suppose.”
The passage opened up into a larger cave, this one tall enough to admit the Dragon form, if need be. Much like the entrance, this one too, was cluttered with junk; neon signs, bits of billboards, old computers, half of a damaged speedboat… there were piles and piles of it, stacked on every imaginable surface, all over the place.
Grinning at the mess, the Dragon ditched her pack on a rickety, three-legged table, beckoning for the bird-shifter to follow her around one of the stacks.
“Here we are. Home sweet home.”
The corvid followed Ada-Creature into a bigger cave that had even MORE PILES OF SHINIES?!
THAT SHE SAID SHE COULD HAVE?!
Immediately, she trotted over to the pile, taking in all of the wonderful treasures the dragon had amassed. Â She never seen so much stuff in one place before! Â And Ada-Creature was letting her have some of it?!
Before she could stop herself, she attempted to bounce for joy around the pile. Â However, she only made it two short hops before a stinging pain in her side caused her to stumble and collapse to the ground.
Right...she probably shouldn’t move too much until she was healed...  In the midst of hauling herself up off the ground, Ada-creature’s words reached her.
Home sweet home.
That made her give pause, slowly looking around the cave before her eyes fell on the woman.  It wasn’t until now that her words had began to sink in.
...this was her home now.  She had a safe place...a place where she could rest..where there was lots of shinies and she wouldn’t have to hurt other creatures anymore.  Where her boss had promised not to hurt her; she’d saved her and wrapped up her wounds and was going to teach her how to read and-
Without realizing, Harpy had trotted over to the woman, pressing the crown of her head at the Ada-creature’s side and wrapping her tail around her legs.
“...thank.”
"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
Eyeing the wings with an air of approval, the Dragon let out a snort, dumping the pack and duster from her antler and shifting rapidly back down into her humanoid form, wrapping the coat around herself to cover the general lack of, well, anything, that the transformation had left.
“Heh, well, I know what to have around for ya now.”
Shouldering the pack, she jerked her head, moving back toward the rear tunnel.
“C’mon, we’re not done yet. There’s more.”
“C-can have shinies?!”
She could scarcely believe it! Â Ada-Dragon would let her have shinies?!
An excited tweet ran out through the cave, “Sabra-creature never let keep shinies!  Kept all for self!  Can keep own shinies?!”
It was a dream come true!
Trilling happily, she followed the dragon down the tunnel. Â Could this get any better?!
"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
Growling and giving the disc a shove, she rolled it slowly away from the opening, creating a gap large enough to shoulder through.
“Nope, I got it. Go on in.”
The front room of the cave was utterly cluttered with junk. Several old automobiles had been dragged in and piled up in the corner, along with various other old-world trinkets, such as pieces of billboards, neon signs, a string of colorful lights, and even an inflatable advertising prop, half-leaked out of air, and propped pathetically in the corner, the sign in its blue hands droopy and unreadable. A passage set against the back wall led into the rest of the complex beyond.
Rolling the metal sheet back into place, the Dragon sighed.
“Welp, there y’are. Home sweet home.”
The woman didn’t seem at all disturbed by the junk piles.
No...not at all...in fact.
She had never SEEN such treasures!  True, she didn’t know what half of those things were, but THEY WERE BEAUTIFUL.
Without realizing, she’d shifted back into her corvid form before she was even halfway over to the pile.  Her pupils dilated as she crouched just in front of it, marveling at the brilliance.
“Is nice...have many shinies!” she murmured, absolutely entranced.
Thankfully, as with most shapeshiters, her new wings did now show any signs of previous injuries. Â When not mutilated beyond recognition, they looked to be quite strong.
"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
The “home” that the Dragon had spoken of was more cave than actual dwelling. She slowed to a screeching halt, kicking up a cloud of dust, and reaching up to set a claw against the edge of a gigantic, rounded sheet of metal that had been propped up to cover the cave entrance most of the way.
Pausing to think things through for a moment, she twisted her neck around to glance at her passenger.
“You, ah, you might wanna get off here, kiddo.”
Harpy was actually rather elated to see that where Ada lived was apparently a cave. Â That she could do!
True, they often slept beneath the stars, but when it rained or the night air had grown too cold they’d take shelter in caves.
It was one of her only good memories, actually...snuggling up in a warm pile.
Gingerly, she slid off the Dragon’s back, regarding her with a smile, “It looks very nice!  C-can I help?”

"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
Nodding, the Dragon grinned, bunching herself up again.
“Good. Hold onta yer tail feathers.”
With a mighty push of her hind legs, she sprang forward into a sprint, stretching out her neck as she barreled forward into the scrub.
She hung on tightly as the dragon lunged forward, clinging onto her mane as she bounded across the wasteland. Â
To be honest, the jostling exacerbated things a bit, but she would certainly not complain.  She was on her was to relief and a home and she could certainly stand to be knocked around a bit.  Thankfully, Ada’s efforts kept the wounds clean, and the bandages together.
As she rode across the wasteland, she wondered to herself if she would hold up well inside a building. Â Truth be told, she was used to sleeping outdoors. Â But the prospect of being safe inside was certainly appealing...
Ultimately, she decided that it didn’t matter, and hunkered down for the duration of the ride.
"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
Another rumbling, dragony laugh made its way up her neck.
“I get it, I get it. Yeah. Thanks.”
Despite her attempt to make the dismissal flippant, there was genuine emotion in her tone.
Rolling her shoulders and gently dipping down into a stretch, she popped back up, eyeing the horizon.
“Can ya hold on if I run?”
She seemed to sense the emotion in the voice, and was quite pleased with herself. Â There was nothing she wanted more than to do her savior proud...
“Oh....” bracing herself, she grabbed the mane, “I can hold on!”
"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
At the end of the long neck, the Dragon’s head bobbed again.
“Nah, that’s… I wouldn’ta been able to live with myself if I’d just walked off. It’s… not a big thing, or anything, I swear.”
Her tail whisked fiercely over the ground behind them, beginning to cover her tracks.
“…not like I can just, y’know… fix everything. Erase the past. Smooth out the future as easily as I smacked that puppy’a yers around.”
She let out a chuckle, “Well, it was a big thing to to me.  I’ve never...had anyone care about me....”
Glancing back at the tail covering their tracks, she creased her brows in worry.  Would Sabra send someone after them?!  She wouldn’t be able to bear it if Ada got hurt because of her.
“Hmmm...no you probably can’t fix everything.  I don’t know what it was you did.  Moreover, I don’t care...” not like it could hold a candle to what she’s done..  “...but I think all you can do is try.  The future might not be smooth, but it’s...it’s nice to even have a future.  I’m going to try my best to make both of ours good.  And, whatever it is you did, I know that you’ll do the same.  You’re a good person...dragon...uh...”
"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
A rumbling sigh passed down the Dragon’s neck.
“It’s just… y’know… there’s so much shit around. So little to fight for. D’ya think it’s really worth it? Living? Doing good?”
The corvid hummed thoughtfully.
“I don’t know.  I haven’t done much- “ she shook her head, might as well tell it like it is, “I haven’t done any good in my life.  All I’ve ever known is violence and survival.  So I...I might not be the best person to ask...”
Though it was difficult to make eye contact, riding on the dragon’s back, she did the best she could, “But I think that even one person trying to do good helps the world.  That’s one less person to add to the shit.  A-and....it was worth it to me.  You didn’t have to save me from Sabra.  You could have left; you could have ignored us and let her tear me apart.”
Dammit...there goes that emotion creeping into her voice again.
“But you didn’t.  You stood up to her and fought her so that I could live. I-I..” she swallowed.  It was getting difficult, “You saved me, and you’re giving me a home and a purpose.  You did good.  And now I want to do good.  So that’s two people.”
"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
Letting out a rumbling sigh, the Dragon shook her head.
“Doesn’t exist, kiddo. Not in a world like this one. This is dog-eat-dog. Or, err, whatever animal you happen to be.”
Her claws dug restless little furrows into the earth as she walked, tense, now.
“You hold onto that instinct. It’ll keep you alive.”
“Oh.  ...well...I guess I can only do so much.  As long as I’m not killing just to kill, I-I guess it’s alright.  There’s nothing wrong with survival...”
Still though...she had her fears about fitting in.  Would she be able to integrate into society after being, for lack of a better word, feral for so long?  Would instinct take over and she’d ending up hurting someone?
Her attention was drawn, however, at the dragon’s gait.  She furrowed her brows at the tension in the step.
“...are you alright?”

"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
“Well, yeah, that’s just the way of the wasteland. Kill or be killed, y’know? It’s nothin’ special, or anything.”
This time, she managed to avoid shrugging, bobbing her head from side to side instead.
Harpy nodded solemnly. Â
“Do...do you think that there are places that aren’t like that?  Peaceful, I mean.  Where you don’t have to fight to survive?  Where it isn’t kill or be killed?”
She shifted on the dragon’s back, “I..I think I like the idea. But...I don’t know.  Fighting I....it’s all I really know.  I mean...I do know that I don’t want to wantonly kill others anymore.  But even now..”
She shakes her head, “The thought of someone giving you trouble just...sends me into attack mode.  I don’t...I thought that maybe once I left I could stop it.  But now I don’t know...”
"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
“Err..”
The look on the dragon’s face can only be described as “awkward.”
“…mmmmore commonly than you might think, I do.”
She trills sharply, angrily.
“People give you shit?!  All you’re doing is delivering things?” she hisses, “I’ll make sure nothing happens to you....”
Utterly, she could not comprehend who would want to hurt Ada!  Already she’d done so much for her!  Who could ever....
....probably...people like she used to be. Â Like...she was still, apparently...
"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
The Dragon’s head bobbed back and forth.
“Nah, you gotta have the ability in the first place. It’s unique to a few species, from what I hear. There were some birds, though, I think, that can do it. They’re out on the Salt Sea Isles. Or that’s what the rumor says, any rate.”
She gasps, “Poisons birds?!  I love to meet one!  Poison would be such a great ability to have!”
She thought a moment, “Ah...though I can’t imagine I’ll be needing it much.  At least....I- you never encounter trouble, do you?”
"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
She shrugged, unheedful of the trouble it might cause to the ascending shapeshifter.
“Eh, it only happens if she’s really upset. And what they eat can affect it, too. Or, to avoid it, she stays in human shape around the kids. There are solutions.”
She nearly slipped at the shrug, but managed to cling on to the dragon’s back.  “A-ahh...I see!”
Gingerly, she rested her head into the dragon’s mane.
“Staying human...that makes sense...  Oh, what does she eat to make herself poison?!  C-could I make myself poison?!”
"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
The Dragon chuckled softly, bobbing her head.
“Yeah, my granddaughter’s poison. But she has a hide, not scales. They need to be able to push the poison out through the skin.”
Hauling herself up onto her feet again, she crouched, offering her shoulders.
“Welp, we’ll have nothin’ but time, shortly. No worries there.”
Harpy winced, “You can get a dose just by touching them?”
She stumbled a bit, trying to climb onto the dragon’s back again.  Once again she tried, gently easing herself up, taking care not to aggravate the wounds.
“Is that the one that runs the orphanage?  H-how does she avoid poisoning the kids?!

"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
She shuddered a bit at the touch, neck arching, but did not pull away.
“What did you think they were gonna be like? Hot, or rough, or somethin’?”
“Y-yeah...I thought rough and sharp...and I think I remember Sabra saying something about poison?”
She withdrew her hand, not because she was afraid of poison, but at the shuddering.
“Or was that about the bright ones?  I don’t remember...”  she murmued.
“Anyway!  You like the winged snake idea!  It might be a wile before I can get it looking good, but I will try!”
"Nah, just a carving. And she's still out there. My daughter's got her, now."
“Oh…you have a daughter?” the question comes out curious, with perhaps a slight undertone of disappointment.
The Dragon’s head tilted.
“Mmmm, a winged snake… that sounds neat. And easily recognizable. Yeah, I like that.”
Tapping at her chin with a claw, she chuckled.
“Would look kinda weird with a messenger bag though, dontcha think? What would it drape it over? A snake’s all neck.”
She stretched her own out to demonstrate.
Harpy couldn’t help but let an excited tweet slip out at the fact that the dragon liked her suggestion!  No one had even encouraged her fancies!  At least not ones that didn’t have to do with surviving.
“Ahh...hmm...I guess your’re right!”
She flinched a bit as the dragon stretched out her neck, but once she saw that she wasn’t about to strike her, she gave the dragon’s neck a good look.
Hesitantly, she reached out, her fingers fluttering uncertainly over the neck before gently touching it.
The scales were smooth to the touch, but had the texture of a shingled roof.
“H-heh...not at all how I thought...” she murmured.
