Another Sunday art, this time itās our beloved bog man HozierĀ š
hozier really went from singing about income inequality to chitchatting with the ceo of apple and sending him heart emojis uwuā¦absolute clownery š¤”
hozier, late 2019: itās always corporate infrastructure over the structure of your face
hozier, early 2020: had a great time chatting with the CEO of a massive corporation!
and i want to make clear - thereās definitely a certain amount of⦠professional politeness i guess? that iām not bothered by, like if he meets some famous person at an event and then says something nice on twitter afterwards. being polite to someone isnāt an endorsement of everything they stand for.
but the hanging-out-in-studio and the heart emojis around this interaction absolutely rubbed me the wrong way and i have a lot of questions about whose idea this was (to put an anti-corporate songwriter and a ceo in the same room) and whether andrew was actually as enthused as his smile and emojis suggest.

Though we live in a world that dreams of ending
that always seems about to give in

From Forbesā Q&A W/Hozier; Hozier Discusses Politics and His Audience
Interview conducted Oct 2019;Ā Published Dec 17, 2019
Baltin: Did you find your audience was hungering for more of a social consciousness in the music they listen to?
Hozier: Possibly, Iām always a little bit reluctant to stand on a show where people have paid for tickets to see me sing songs to start speaking or to offer speeches. I worry thatās thin ice, but people sometimes do want to hear that.
Baltin: I think it just depends on the relationship the artist builds with their audience. If you go see Bruce Springsteen and he didnāt talk youād be totally surprised. So do you feel like you have built that relationship with your audience?
Hozier: Yeah, itās a funny one. Iām pretty sure the audience knows where my heart is on a lot of issues. When we get into conversations of left and right that is conversation that can be used, and more so is used, to divide citizens and workers letās say. Itās something that you have to be careful of. But I would agree with the sentiment that artists are saying, āYeah, it does change things.ā And you donāt feel like you can ignore it. Itās such the steaming s**t elephant in the room you canāt ignore it. It has to come into your work. I think itās healthy and restorative for people to stand in a communal space like a show and youāre connected with a love of music, but then also to have your values resonate with one another thatās a restorative thing and thatās an encouraging thing.
Baltin: For you, growing up, what were those shows for you?
Hozier: There are a few I can think of. There is one band much loved at home, Glen Hansardās band, the Frames, is incredibly popular and Dublin based, real hometown heroes in that regard. I remember being a young kid being in a show like that. Itād be like being in Jersey at a Bruce Springsteen concert, that feeling of home and music and community and being part of that show. Thatās a special thing.

From Forbesā Q&A W/Hozier; Hozier and Poets
Interview Conducted Oct 2019; Published Dec. 17, 2019
Baltin: Are there lyrics and moments that surprise you in your writing?
Hozier: Yeah, Iām sure there are examples like that. Letās take, from the first album, āFrom Eden,ā I think itās just a general filtering of how you feel the world is going. So āIdealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on his sword/Innocence died screaming.ā Itās just that feeling of things are going south, theyāre going the wrong way. And part of it is too I try to make subtle references to other artists who have pointed in the same direction. So I think on the EP before, thereās a song called āNothing F**ks With My Baby,ā which is pretty heavy handed (laughs). It references this old W.B. Yeats poem, āThe Second Coming.ā Sometimes you channel it in different ways and usually it is the best way because it feels natural and it feels right.
Baltin: Are there other poets that have crept into your work or you would love to pay homage to?
Hozier: There are a lot of Irish poets. Oscar Wilde comes into some of the work. In the first album in particular thereās a sort of fairytale aspect to some of the songs, a song like āIn The Woods Somewhere,ā a song like āReal People Do.ā In my late teens, early 20s, I fell in love with his work, his poetry as well. I think I borrowed a line from an Oscar Wilde poem in āFrom Eden.ā
