Anti Japanese resistance culture park

Actor Yang Lei dies about a thousand times a year. He plays a "Japanese devil" in a resistance park in the city of Wuxian. that opened in 2009. It is a classic example of the new realistic perception that the propaganda authorities use to keep the memory of the second world war alive. 

National Peoples Congress

This is a look behind the scenes of the National Peoples Congress in China. Its the political media event of the year with about 3000 delegates visiting the Great Hall of the People. Some very popular, some very sleepy. 

These men are super recognisers. They work for Scotland Yard and their job is to go through hours and hours of CCTV footage to match faces to crimes. Our job was to take a portrait of them. Watching the detectives.

Punkt. makes mobile phones that do just one thing: being a mobile phone. And they don’t come in fancy colours either. Just black. I think that the iPhone 5c just came out when we shot these pictures. I know that the coloured backgrounds we used were a direct response to the iPhone ads. Rather than shooting different coloured phones on a plain background, we photographed the same black phone over and over again - but every time on a new background. The portrait shows Jasper Morrison, the designer of the phone, and Petter Neby, the founder of Punkt.

Hualuxe is a very posh hotel in Nanchang, China. And it’s a weird place - super luxurious on the inside but located in the grimiest of suburbia. We photographed the interior designer, the karaoke rooms, the dusty streets around it and all the different uniforms the staff was wearing. 

The bottom picture was taken in Milan when the furniture designers of SCP first started working together. I’m not sure who took that picture, but it wasn’t us. The top picture is by us. It’s taken 30 years after the original, and all but two designers reappear in the new photograph. James Irvin has died, but his wife came to take his spot. Konstantin Grcic had to be somewhere else, so he was replaced by a paper version of himself.

For Vice Magazine we dove into the archives. By flipping the images upside down we tried to undo the car crashes we found at the Archive of Modern Conflict.

This is Fernando Laposse and he is an artist. We met up in his studio in North London where he has a laboratory setup for his food and art experiments. Everything he does is edible, and everything is art.
