Take a #mypubliclandsroadtrip to Your New National Monument: Basin and Range National Monument in Nevada
Basin and Range - the newest addition to the BLM’s National Conservation Lands - includes approximately 704,000 acres of public land in of one the most undisturbed corners of the broader Great Basin region. Less than two hours from Las Vegas, this unbroken expanse attracts recreationists seeking vastness and solitude. The monument tells the story of the area’s native peoples as well as the history of more recent settlers and mining communities. The designation also preserves current uses of the land, including traditional ranching practices and ongoing military training operations, while ensuring that the land remains unspoiled for future generations.
Basin and Range National Monument is one of three new monuments designated today, protecting more than 1 million acres. The other new monuments are Berryessa Snow Mountain in California and Waco Mammoth in Texas. Learn more: go.wh.gov/Monuments #FindYourPark

Here’s “The Camel” from Return To The City of White Donkeys:
Here’s his Paris Review interview:
you can just walk by somebody downtown and overhear one phrase and it’s a cliché and suddenly you go, Wow, actually that’s very beautiful when it’s taken out of its normal meaning. It’s very stimulating and it gives you a lot to think about.
And here’s a little writing tip:
“Another good thing that happens [when you allow yourself to stop writing in the middle and pick up the next day] is that the next day you’re another person… and so you may have come up against a brick wall the day before but the next day you go there and you look at that and you go, no, no, no, I want to go this direction. And you start taking in it a slightly different direction than you thought you were going. And that frees you up quite often and gets you into a new territory… You’ve had experiences, you’ve had dreams, you’ve had idle thoughts, you know. So that’s what I meant by being a new person. You look at the fifteen lines you wrote the day before and you have a different idea. Whereas when you quit the day before you thought you were out of ideas.”
If you don’t know his work, click around here or better yet, just grab his Selected Poems, which won the Pulitzer Prize.
“…in the obscured sky a moon does float, newly, a wishing moon, a sliver of ancient rock, a goddess, a wink. The moon is a stone and the sky is full of deadly hardware, but oh God, how beautiful anyway.”

Infertility made the idea of having no afterlife so absolute, so intrusive and so strangling into people’s lives, that it catapulted people into chaos.

Signed into law by President Theodore Roosevelt on this day in 1906, the Antiquities Act gives the president the authority to create national monuments from public lands. Used more than 100 times since its passage, this gallery shows just a few of the national treasures preserved by this law.
