Disclaimer: This email is long and contains a hell of a lot of sappiness, thank-yous and moments in which the President was actually tearing up at the computer! Scroll right down for actual gleeky information about this week.
Where do I even begin? Last night a few people pointed out that this was the first time they had seen me speechless... well for good reason. Warwick Glee started off with humble beginnings, having only been around for three years (this would be the third year we have been running!) and I knew I had a daunting task ahead of me when I was elected almost a year ago. I remember standing behind someone in a queue in the Student Union as they noticed we were performing for the Summer Party, and they laughed and said (paraphrasing here, they were much ruder!) "who would want to watch that cheesy crap?". I was determined to turn this perception around. But, like the TV show, there were many obstacles and times which I felt that we would never be more than what people perceive us to be.
Things have changed. Overnight we went from underdogs to champions, and my goodness, there are no words to describe this feeling. Victory is just so sweet, especially when we clinched it from our rivals from last year, Cambridge, who put up a very very good fight. I knew we put on a fabulous show, but when the judges of the Masters of Show Choir 2013 competition announced the winners, I certainly didn't expect them to say, "Warwick Glee" There is no greater high than winning, and boy was I soaring when they said our name.
I used to do gleek-of-the-week more regularly, and that is something that I will ask the next exec to do (Oh my goodness, my days are numbered as President!) but I simply couldn't choose. Gleeks, bear with me, but I need to say a few words to the Masters team.
To our reserves, Maisie, Megan and Matt: Thank you so much for being a part of our team. It was a privilege to have your support and commitment and your boundless energy and help. I am looking forward to you three storming the stage in next year's competition, where I will be cheering you from the audience. It will be your moment, and I know you will seize it!
To our wonderful basses, Chris and Ben: The depth you added with your voices is something that is completely underrated, and you both have a tone to your voices so unmistakably unique. Chris, I am proud of the work you have done, no doubt the choreography was difficult for you but you powered through it with gusto and no complaint. Ben, what can I say, you came out of nowhere and absolutely stole the show as one of our strong male leads. You both are so, so wonderfully talented.
To our terrific tenors, Calvin and Ashley: Calvin I remember watching you for the first time at a gig and I was blown away. I just thought, if only we had someone of his caliber. When you showed up at auditions I was gobsmacked, and I knew you would be a fantastic addition to our team. You exceeded my expectations! My God man, where did you learn to sing like that? Congratulations, 'Best Soloist' award is rightly deserved. Ashley. Hell man there are no words, your infectious energy lifts everyone's spirits and I know that if there is one thing that truly made our team unique, it was your smile and endless reserves of sass that made us unforgettable.
To our beautiful altos, Lora, Monique, Beth and Klara: My dear girls, each one of you are incredibly beautiful and unique individuals with powerhouse vocals. If only we could bottle up your combined talent and sell it... Lora, you meshed in with everyone so well and your love for music shines in your performance. A wonderful solo performance with ad libs that cannot be rivalled! Monique, you are sunshine in a jar. i knew that starting the show with your divalicious ka-pow style would start us off with a bang. I don't know what we'd do without you. Beth, I knew you were going to be a winner when I heard you sing at OWW Launch Night. My mind was made up then, I wanted you on the team and man were my instincts on the dot. Klara, sweetheart, you are a fighter true and true. This girl had to fight through her asthma when the smoke machine came on, and still manage to hit those notes and growl like no one else can. You are unbelievable.
To our superb sopranos, Emi and Isabelle: Isabelle, I just want to keep you in my pocket forever. You are amazing and chipper all the time and when you walk in to the room everything is brighter. Your voice has an incredible clarity, my dear and I am looking forward to hearing so much more from you in the future. Emi, 'Best Soloist' is rightly deserved. You have a stunning, stunning voice and the emotion you poured into it moves me every time I hear you perform Run and your performance last night will be in my memory forever.
To our Creative Director, Jordan: My partner in crime, my collaborator, my genius man, without you, there would be no Warwick Glee. The society will be hard-pressed to find a successor because there is no one that can fill your shoes. Your arrangement, choreography and creative ideas were astounding, and your talent knows know bounds. Whipping us into shape was hard and it took its toll but you were patient and watching your project come to fruition was a sight to behold. And as your friend, you know I love you dearly and I am sorry if I was ever impatient. You are incredible. There will never be any one like Jordan Charles.
To our Vice President, Frances: I couldn't have done this without you. Your committment and love of Warwick Glee shows through in everything you do and I cannot believe I was so lucky to have you as my second-in-command. Thank you for being there when I nearly gave up and thank you for always having faith because that is exactly what we needed. You are, and will always remain my hero, and everyone should appreciate the hard work you put in behind the scenes. Because what you all don't see is the administration, the money, the planning and tears that goes into it. Frances has given everything she's got. And it has paid off.
You all have become my family and I have never been so proud. Last night was one of the best nights of my life. Now we can say that we are Warwick Glee an award-winning society and the UK's number one show choir. A massive, massive well done to all of you!
Your President
Brenda Wong.
