Happy Birthday megasmans! Here’s the bae for you on your special day uwu
* the greedy lamb
Zheng had seen the world change in the blink of an eye. It was not the work of magic, nor the messianic intervention of miracles. It was the work of man, driven by the will of man, whose relentless struggle against himself had transformed him into the new babe of the next era. And the cost of this new life came with life itself, with prayers and miseries unanswered, with virtuous desires sacrificed for an experiment of dreams. The countless pages of history written in blood of generations past were flipping before his eyes as he surveyed the city of Rome from its highest castle. In this permeating peace, Zheng could only imagine the copious sacrifices made to build this kind of world.
An entire jug, Zheng decided. Tonight, he was going to drink an entire jug of liquor for all the lives that had been offered to create the Rome of today. It deserved much more, but Zheng would have to make up in quality instead. There was no holding back. He summoned a ceramic jar of the finest brewed liquor left in his mausoleum and brought out a set for drinking. He filled one cup and left it by his side, its transparent surface aglow from the moon, and raised his own, mirroring the same effect.
"Accept this unworthy gift, o people of Rome! This old man who cannot even name himself is brazen and insolent, having come here to endanger the land and people you’ve fought to protect for a mighty, selfish wish! My sympathy would be words no different than a pretender’s; I am bare before your judgment. However! Be the witness to this oath alongside my shameless greed: I will not lay a hand on the innocents. None, without exception, will be allowed to defile the noble sacrifice you’ve laid for the carnage in your time. No man or spirit - not even the Grail I seek - will make me bend over and accept anything other than this!"
He raised the cup higher and, for a moment, froze in the position. His hair whipped from the breeze in the high altitude, but the more the wind tried to chill him, the more his resolve seemed to grow and take root. Zheng took the liquor to his lips and slowly drank in his baptism.
The blond sat with his legs dangling over the parapets of the tower, looking out over the city. The wind whistled ominously, but there was something about the quiet of the higher stones of Rome that gave him a sense of peace. After all, he had once lived in a city that floated above the earth itself; vertigo hardly affected the swordsman. Well, it was quiet, for a time.
The man's long ears were pricked by a booming voice. Curious, he approached the source of the sound, and found a lone man and a curious bottle. There was a slightly astringent, almost medicinal scent in the air, and Link wondered if the jug contained some kind of potion. "That's quite the oath," the Hylian said, a puzzled look on his face. He had made it quite clear that he was after the Grail, and Link couldn't help but wonder what made him decide to yell it into the sky.
Hiatus over!
Hello! I'm back from vacation and I've replied to a couple people, but its been so long I've mainly just replied to be polite so if you want to drop the thread at this point it's ok! I know the war was supposed to start tomorrow but I haven't seen any updates or anything on that so it's kind of up to you there.
My askbox is also open if someone wants to do something! Thanks!

Shidou noticed the hesitation from the servant in giving his name, but also his receptiveness to the handshake. It gave the vibe that he was a friendly person but necessarily cautious, especially given the circumstances. Thankfully, he did give his name in the end.
"Sure thing. My name is Shidou, Shidou Itsuka. It’s nice to meet you Link."
Shidou found it a bit odd that he didn’t give a last name…but at the same time he wasn’t really sure if a servant might even have one. He decided to give Link the benefit of the doubt rather than be needlessly suspicious. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to come up with a follow up to continue the conversation.
"So, uh, Link…what do you do?"
"Nice to meet you, Shidou," he said warmly. "What do...I do?" Link found it an odd question, to be honest. "Well, as a servant, I believe I am here to fight. Similar to you, but not quite in the same fashion. I can use a lot of weapons, but...well let's just say you wouldn't see me in a Caster class," he joked.
The Ultimate Game [open]
this one was a servant, and one that seemed vaguely familiar at that. he could have sworn he’d played a game with a character that looked like the man standing in front of him. but that couldn’t be right? could it?
at that moment it wasn’t worth pursuing, he’d find out more about the servants through interactions.
"you’re also new huh?" he grinned, a fact that he already knew just from the boy’s magic signature, "well that would make sense, wouldn’t it? servant-kun.”
"That obvious, huh," he winced. He placed a gloved hand on his hip, looking the man squarely in the face. There was a slight tone of condescension in the honorific that didn't sit completely right with him, but Link was withholding judgment on the man for now. "That would make you a Master, then?" Link inquired; it seemed likely given his tone.
✧ "You gotta have a name, everyone does! Or else how I am supposed to call you?" ✧ The sole idea of having to come up with a name for her new friend was tempting but at the very same time it didn’t feel right — why he was hiding it? 'Maybe he has a funny or embarrassing name.' If anything, her thoughts wandered to the most obnoxious assumptions except believing he was involved in the carnage that is to come.
She glanced away momentarily, decided to leave the thinking to her stomach or else it would turn into a more troublesome task.
✧ "Oh? I’m here for something important! But it’s a…secret!” ✧
✧ “I can tell you mine if you tell me what’s your name, though…” ✧
Link was a little surprised; maybe he wasn't taking this person seriously enough. "It's...Link," he smiled. There was a certain charm about the woman. "I guess you could say I'm here for something important, too."
A warm, yeasty scent ticked Link's nose and he realized they had come to the front of a bakery that looked promising. He motioned towards the door, inviting Ran to step inside with him.
Shidou paid close attention to what they had to say. There was no doubt in his mind now.
"If that’s the case, then that must mean you’re a servant. I must confess this is my first time speaking to one myself."
He put out a hand towards him. “Pleased to meet you. Your name is…?”
Link accepted the handshake, appreciative of the friendly gesture but wary of the question. "Same here. Ah, well..." Link really had no idea if he was well-known in this world or not, or even what possible advantage somebody could gain from knowing his identity, but he had been summoned with the knowledge his name was best kept close. Then again, he was curious about the boy, and his curiosity got the better of him.
"It's Link," he answered. He looked at the Master carefully. "Name for a name?"
ooc;
i'll reply to people today. thanks for your patience! D:

A realistic-looking Link portrait. — Art by Teralilac.
Link throughout the Smash years.
The man’s reply was rather friendly, which put Shidou more at ease.
"That’s right, I’m a magus. I guess in the context of the war, I’m what you would call a master."
I should really avoid telling people too much about myself, but…
"There really are a lot of magi, aren’t there? More than I’ve ever met anyway."
While not intimidating (at least once the initial tension had passed), Shidou felt the man was quite capable. He only wished he could say the same about himself.
A master, Link thought, curious. He noticed the magus relaxing a little bit. "If you're a master, I guess that gives me a good reason to talk to you." Link felt a little awkward just standing there talking, so he motioned for the youth to follow him and started to walk. Even if he already had a Servant, it couldn't hurt to chat with him for awhile; maybe he could learn a little more about the human world.
"Even though there are a lot, I haven't gotten to really speak with any Masters since I've gotten here," Link said, stretching his arms. He could have mentioned he was summoned here as a Servant in the war, but we wanted to see him work it out for himself.
Shidou’s eyes locked with the strange man before him, and froze a little bit. He felt a bit awkward for having been caught staring but for some reason he felt like he couldn’t help himself. He felt a strange sensation, unlike any of his previous encounters.
This feeling…I’ve never felt this before but there can be no other explanation. It has to be a servant!
Having finally met one, Shidou was unsure how to approach the situation. He decided it would be best not to rush things lest there be a misunderstanding or complication.
"You…you wouldn’t happen to be a participant as well, would you?"
I want to be able to confirm if he’s a servant without asking him directly. Too many people are already aware of my inexperience, so I can’t really afford another or he might actually take advantage of me. If he really is a servant, I will have had the experience of meeting one without relying on anyone else…
The Hylian man regarded him carefully before nodding in agreement, crossing his arms over his chest. He didn't seem to know what to make of the boy before him; his question implied he was involved with the upcoming war.
"Ah, you must be a magus," he said with a friendly smile. "There seem to be a lot of magi around here, aren't there?" The youth didn't look terribly impressive, but Link knew better than to underestimate someone based on how intimidating they looked; his own enemies had made that mistake before and paid for it.
haha none of my link icons look remotely the same bc they are all from random doujin lmao /lays down ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ

Shidou looked up at the sky. His time in Rome had been eventful, and he met a good number of people, some more odd than others, and was able to learn from them. While he was still worried there was a lot he didn’t know, he felt he at least stood a fighting chance now. Except…
"I still haven’t been able to meet a servant in all this time. It’s worrying me a bit…I don’t have too much time until the war starts."
He looked back down and saw someone who looked out of place amongst the crowd of people.
"I wonder who they could be…"
Link had always felt a bit naked without a sword. When he found himself swordless, it was usually his first order of business to acquire one, but in this war his steel was unfortunately of a magical nature. He would require prana to maintain the Master Sword in this world, and prana was so far a limited resource. Theoretically mundane weapons were an option, but he told himself it wasn't quite necessary; there wouldn't be any fighting for a time, yet, and if there was an emergency he was sure he could spare a few days' worth of prana. Given that I find a Master in a reasonable amount of time, that is.
He felt an unusual presence nearby, and looked around carefully; he caught the gaze of a teenage boy who was looking straight at him. It was a little disconcerting. Link stopped and rested a gloved hand on his hip, looking at him expectantly. "Yes?"
✧ "Yes, we’ll find a good place to eat too! It’ll be my treat!" ✧ Nothing wrong on pouring some of her saving on something like this, right? She took his palm into her hands, shaking it in a rather excitable fashion. Perhaps the fact how easily sidetracked she managed to get would be non-beneficial for the incoming war but said thought ended as a last priority for the inexperienced magus, too busy focusing on the many possibilities Rome offered.
Plus, she had found someone to hang out! Wasn’t that great?
✧ "By the waay, what’s your name? I’m Ran! Also, you’re dressed funny but I like it." ✧
Link smiled at her, breaking into a walk as he looked around the streets for a restaurant that looked promising.
"My name?" Link paused, unsure how to answer. This girl could end up being his enemy, after all, if she was a part of the war; just because she was excitable didn't mean she couldn't be dangerous. "It's, uh, not really important. Nice to meet you, Ran." He spied a small eatery and pulled Ran towards it. "So, Ran, what brings you to Rome?" he tried.
