The space served as a sacrarium, a highly private domestic shrine utilized for religious rituals and housing sacred devotional objects.

The stunning blue background is painted entirely with Egyptian Blue, the earliest synthetically produced pigment in history. Blue was exceptionally rare and expensive in Pompeian wall paintings, usually signaling vast wealth.

Studies estimate that applying this amount of pigment cost the homeowners between 93 and 168 denarii—equating to more than half the annual salary of a Roman legionary soldier.
