obsessed with the framing of this scene and the power play going on. rhaenyra is the one who holds more power than alicent but this scene shows how much power alicent is holding over rhaenyra.
alicent has put her seven pointed star necklace back on as if to remind herself of the conduct she should carry herself with after having shouted at her queen. she enters and apologises and though may say the words of an apology nothing else about her says 'i'm sorry'. she's smiling. she doesn't bow. she's standing over rhaenyra instead of sitting, rhaenyra is having to look up at her.
she's trying to make it seem like she is below rhaenyra when she isn't. she makes herself look humble and repentant and immediately uses the chance to get something she wants and even then, she diminishes the ask as "a small request only", as if a prisoner who just shouted and questioned the queen has a right to a request at all.
what's even better is that it works and rhaenyra can't even look away from her, proving who has the more power.

obsessed with what’s gotta be the weakest prisoner/hostage situation i’ve ever seen in my entire life. alicent not allowed to leave but can wander to rhaenyra’s quarters whenever she pleases. one flash of a tender moment and rhaenyra is asking for her advice. rhaenyra “can’t be seen favouring hightowers” but shows up at her door, tail between her legs, spilling the beans that she kidnapped her son. alicent, staunch truth teller to her detriment, doesn’t even try to pretend it’s actually daeron. alicent asking the real questions like “am i supposed to thank you?” and “so i’m supposed to hope for the death of my son?” bc yeah rhaenyra has lost the plot (affectionate)
rhaenyra doesn't hold up her end of the deal not only because she wonders if alicent has betrayed her but also because she doesn't want to let alicent leave, she can't let her leave, because she is such an integral part of rhaenyra. she has already lost so much of herself, she can't afford to lose another piece. alicent knows her in ways other people don't, as teenagers alicent was the only person she could rely on for emotional support. she trusts that alicent wouldn't lie to her, she trusts that she can be the grounding presence that she needs. rhaenyra doesn't want to become something she isn't and alicent is the best person to remind her of who she is at her core and to even be that other side of her that might end up getting crushed by the crown
i love how free alicent was able to be in terms of her expression because of how rhaenyra allows it. she lets her shout and be frustrated, she lets her correct her, she seeks her council. rhaenyra knows how hard it can be for a woman to get her voice heard, she knows how harshly emotions can be judged so she offers alicent the safe place where she can open up and be herself and not have to perform and act in a certain manner that is usually expected of her
and we all know who you shared that dream with
having alicent warn rhaenyra that "you may not rule and remain yourself" because that is exactly what happened to alicent. i immediately thought of alicent saying "i like to believe I'm still the lady alicent but all anyone sees when they look at me now is the queen" it's the harsh truth of becoming a ruler. you're made into something you're not and the people around you start ignoring who you really are in favor of making you into who they want you to be
rhaenyra doesn't want to believe she'll become something she won't recognise. it's pessimistic for alicent to say "time will tell" but alicent didn't believe she would be changed so much either, she wants to brace rhaenyra for what may come

Everyone that hates Alicent needs to go rewatch season one and see Emily Carey's performance again. Especially that scene when Otto told her to go to the King's chambers and offer him comfort, see how her voice trembled and turned small and how she began biting her nails. The young Alicent's anxiety, sadness, and despair was truly brought to life. That girl really was only a child forced to become queen and ITS SO SAD.
