so when alicent learns about rhaenyra and mysaria's relationship and has homoerotic visions at harrenhal what's going to happen
i love the implications of "there is in you a door that must shut". alicent is giving rhaenyra advice but it also feels like an explanation for the way alicent acted towards her. it feels like a confession that she didn't want to be so cruel, she didn't want to shove the affection she had for rhaenyra aside, but unfortunately she had to. she was made to be that way, she was pitted against rhaenyra when she never should've been
having rhaenyra acknowledge alicents capabilites also felt like a confession in itself for how she was feeling in s1. we know how much she strove for alicents approval, she was always the one apologising first and offering peace treaties and its so interesting to think that even during this time where their relationship was at its most strained, rhaenyra still held respect for what alicent could do
"so to find herself so far from alicents kindness and affirmation is really stark."
so of course rhaenyra tries to explain that it doesn't please her to keep her prisoner, she wants alicent to understand that she does still care for her. no wonder she's so awkward when telling her that daeron is being sent to the wall, it pains her to know alicent won't like it. she lets alicent see him to give her one more tender moment with her boy to make her happy. "do you wish me to thank you?" yes! she does want you to thank her, she craves your approval!! no wonder she's on cloud fucking nine when alicent apologises to her and she learns alicent might not be as mad at her as the thought. she acknowledges how well alicent ruled because no one else has.
really emphasising how much she craves that affirmation with how much she's doing to stay on her good side.
Alicent being unable to emotionally connect with her children bc they were born out of (legalized) rape… and the abuse she suffered as a child being a political tool and not her own person.. her only connecting with Heleana after she says that she forgives her - a grace no one has shown Alicent… the child teaching her parent love and empathy… ugh I need to lay down

"How comes Alicent knew it wasn't Daeron if she hadn't seen him since he was an infant?"
THE ANSWER IS RIGHT THERE.
IN THE NEXT FUCKING LINE!
If you want to complain, do it about actual plot holes and watch the damn show with your eyes open before!!!
This framing. Enough.
People don't understand Alicent because they take a quote/action and entirely remove the context of it or forget everything else she has ever said. You can't understand an arc if you don't look at the entire arc.
The early episodes make it clear she has no intention of putting Aegon on the throne. "Rhaenyra would make a fine Queen. Would you have me raise a man to steal his own sister's birthright?" When Otto gets removed from the council, she says to him "If you had not been so relentless in advancing Aegon as heir." She doesn't see it as the right thing to do hence she sees it as one of the reasons he got removed.
It has also been made clear that Otto coerced and forced her into putting Aegon on the throne. "Our hearts were never one." "I have been a piece that you moved about the board. I wanted whatever you impressed upon me to want." She adopts the ideology that Aegon is 'meant' to be King because its what she has been impressed upon to do, she doesn't agree with it but it's exhausting to constantly fight against that.
She did not want to drag Aegon from the streets but it was going to happen regardless because Otto had already sent Erryk and Arryk to find him. There was no use in Alicent trying to stop Aegons ascension so she stepped in herself for the sake of ensuring Otto wouldn't advise Aegon to have Rhaenyra killed.
She forces herself to believe Viserys' dying wish for the sake of giving her life a purpose, making her sacrifices amount to something and most importantly, it is her duty to do as the King wants. "You toil still in service to men." is a pattern in her arc. Duty is above all for Alicent. Why do you think she falters so easily when Rhaenyra tells her the truth of the prophecy? She learns it wasn't what he wanted, she knows it's not right to justify her actions on a lie and her heart was never really in it in the first place.
Alicent did not start all of this, the men should be held accountable. It started with Viserys doing nothing to ensure the people remain loyal to Rhaenyra and with Otto taking advantage of the fact the realm doesn't want to see a woman on the throne.
No, but Alicent and Rhaenyra in 3x02 fuck me up because suddenly they're in the roles they were always supposed to have. They were supposed to live in the Red Keep together, Rhaenyra was supposed to be queen of the Seven Kingdoms and Alicent was supposed to be her closet confidant and advisor instead of Viserys'. This is the ideal future their pilot selves would've been too cautious to hope for. But so much has happened in between then and now, so much that can't be undone, years of resentment, distrust, betrayal, hate, death and carnage, with more to come, and it's ruined this victory for them. Things have never been more right but it's still all wrong and it's too late to fix it. It is odd to be here with you, indeed.

alicent should've sat on rhaenyra's lap, yanked on that chain and they should've made out sloppily
“Rhaenyra is kind of seeking the approval of her prisoner. As though you’ve locked up your conscious in the castle and you come in periodically to sort of check in and see how they think you’re doing.”
kind of wild how HotD is like “the other nobles will view Rhaenyra as less capable because she has emotions and has not numbed herself to the loss of life. they will act as though her emotions are tied to her womanhood, and therefore they will say her being a woman makes her weak.” and then after every episode I log onto this website and see people going “wow I can’t believe they made rhaenyra cry when she did an extremely hard task immediately after the death of her son. they really turned her into a weak woman. this must be because the show runners hate women” …yall 😭
obsessed with the framing of this scene and the power play going on. rhaenyra is the one who holds more power than alicent but this scene shows how much power alicent is holding over rhaenyra.
alicent has put her seven pointed star necklace back on as if to remind herself of the conduct she should carry herself with after having shouted at her queen. she enters and apologises and though may say the words of an apology nothing else about her says 'i'm sorry'. she's smiling. she doesn't bow. she's standing over rhaenyra instead of sitting, rhaenyra is having to look up at her.
she's trying to make it seem like she is below rhaenyra when she isn't. she makes herself look humble and repentant and immediately uses the chance to get something she wants and even then, she diminishes the ask as "a small request only", as if a prisoner who just shouted and questioned the queen has a right to a request at all.
what's even better is that it works and rhaenyra can't even look away from her, proving who has the more power.
That feeling when she is both your biggest problem and the solution
You are broke? Her House is one of the richest in the realm.
Civil war? She is one of the figureheads of the enemy. Chain her or marry her. Do both if you aim for spicy nights.
The High Septon hates you? Wonderful, her House represents the Faith. Let her speak with that man. Or again, just marry her.
Need someone to do paperwork? Marry her.
Need someone in your Small Council who actually has experience? Bring her.
Daily dose of wife scolding as ASMR for your headache? She provides well.
Domestic care? 20 years of experience in taking care of a sovereign with stupidity and chronic disease. Take her.
Your wounded inner child needs soothing? Wow, guess who's home now?
Bastardy and legitimacy are biting your arse? Didn't she tell you so years ago? 100% "I told you so" Wife Energy.
You are torn because you must put her sons on a blade? Wow shit, who said that she and her dad raised the Green kids in delulu and hatred because they believed you would do so one day to protect your throne?
If only you two could have kids together, people would be spared from senseless war, and the dragons would not become extinct.

obsessed with what’s gotta be the weakest prisoner/hostage situation i’ve ever seen in my entire life. alicent not allowed to leave but can wander to rhaenyra’s quarters whenever she pleases. one flash of a tender moment and rhaenyra is asking for her advice. rhaenyra “can’t be seen favouring hightowers” but shows up at her door, tail between her legs, spilling the beans that she kidnapped her son. alicent, staunch truth teller to her detriment, doesn’t even try to pretend it’s actually daeron. alicent asking the real questions like “am i supposed to thank you?” and “so i’m supposed to hope for the death of my son?” bc yeah rhaenyra has lost the plot (affectionate)
rhaenyra doesn't hold up her end of the deal not only because she wonders if alicent has betrayed her but also because she doesn't want to let alicent leave, she can't let her leave, because she is such an integral part of rhaenyra. she has already lost so much of herself, she can't afford to lose another piece. alicent knows her in ways other people don't, as teenagers alicent was the only person she could rely on for emotional support. she trusts that alicent wouldn't lie to her, she trusts that she can be the grounding presence that she needs. rhaenyra doesn't want to become something she isn't and alicent is the best person to remind her of who she is at her core and to even be that other side of her that might end up getting crushed by the crown
