We have this idealised vision of the Middle Ages that appeared in the Victorian era, and ppl began romanticising knights from then on.

At first knights were just a group of men being payed to slaughtered if I am not mistaken, and they were known to be very violent with they people, especially with the woman, usually raping them.

Then knighthood began a thing where they were expected to protect noblewomen. If a woman was not a noble, they still encouraged to violate them.

Like I said before, knighthood and chivalry became romanticised in the Victorian era and now we think of them as proper, honourable and devout while they were clearly historically horrible to women.

The concept of chivalry just a century ago was also only applied for white women.

Now all this explains why you may read GOT and ask yourself why are some knights so cruel, take Gregor Clegane as an example. In the end, he’s just an accurate representation of what knights truly were.

I am currently reading ADWD and honestly I really love Theon Greyjoy. Here we can see a sort transition when he arrived back to Winterfell, he still is Reek in his head, even though he is expected to be Theon Greyjoy. Though, slowly, he moves out of the Reek mindset, he’ll never be the same Theon Greyjoy again, but he is becoming a person.

At the same time, he thinks of himself as an intruder in Winterfell, that he does not belong. There’s the scene with Lady Dustin where he admits hating the Starks, and simply proved him wrong.

He is a Stark at heart, and where I am in the story, he still hasn’t realised that completely. He calls Winterfell a place closest to home, even though he still believes he has none.

I haven’t finished ADWD yet and I’m still in the middle of the book, but I really enjoy reading his chapters because they are always so fascinating. As a reader I feel so much pity for him, but at the same time I adore reading his pov, especially his time at Winterfell(his time with Ramsay was so unsettling though).
