Elvira
It's what's on the inside that counts.
What's on the inside: 🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱🪱
just finished The Ugly Stepsister and i have a couple of thoughts
firstly: we have a movie about body horror body modification female beauty standards feminine horror and they didn't do a corset scene. i repeat. THEY DIDN'T DO A CORSET SCENE THE CORSETS ARENT FETISHISED AS TORTURE INSTRUMENTS u guys have no idea how happy this makes me personally
secondly: alma/cinderella was definitely pregnant right? the baby shoes, her sudden need to marry the prince when before she wouldnt leave the stable hand, the lingering close up of come, her body thickening after the 3 month time jump?
anyway everyone should watch this film its truly a masterpiece of discomfiting body horror
the horror queens that just want to be perfect 𓂃 ࣪ ִֶָ☾.

To be honest, I haven't watched "The ugly stepsister" yet but I'm already impressed that the directors used beauty practices that probably were popular in 19th century for the body horror scenes
TW: disgusting information
I mean the eyelash-sewing scene. I used to think it was some kind of historical myth about "terrible 1800s" so I didn't take this information seriously. The release of this film motivated me to do more research and I found something interesting:
Eyelash sewing is mentioned in many newspapers from 1880-1890s. For example, here is an article from the Dundee Courier newspaper:
"There are specialists who make a handsome living out of the process of transplanting hair from the head to the eyebrows or eyelashes. The specialist works by putting in, not on, the new eyelashes and brows wherever they are absent or grow thin, and so cunning is be in his work that not even the closesr scrunity can detect any difference.
This is the way nes eyelashes are put in: - An ordinary fine needle is threaded with a long gair, generally taken from the head of the person to be operated upom. The lower border of the eyelid is then thoroughly cleaned, and in order that the process may be as painless as possible rubbed with a solution of cocaine. The operator then by a fed skilful touches runs his needle through the extreme edges of the eyelid between the epidermus and the lower border of the cartilage of the tragus. The needle passes in and out along the edge of the lid, leaving its hair thread in loops of carefully graduated length"
1899
And here's what was written in The Truth:
"Truly the inventions this nineteenth century has brought forth are wonderful, but surely one of the most marvellous in this: - The Parisians have found out how to make false eyelashes. I do not speak of the vulgar and well-known trick of darkening the rim round the eye with all kinds of dirty compositions, or more artistic plan of doing so to the inside of the lid. No, they actually draw a fine needle, threaded with dark hair, through the skin of the eyelid, forming long loops, and after the process in ober (I am told it is a painless one), a splendid dark fringe veuls the coquette's eyes"
1882
Here the author of the article mentions Paris. So what about French magazines? I found a short article from La croix:
Translate from French (there may be mistakes, I'm sorry): "The operation by which this precious result is obtained closely resembles a torture, but creatures patient enough to remain for four hours of clock in the hands of an enameller who covers their face, arms and shoulders with varnish, are able to face all the sufferings to reach the illusion of plastic perfection. Armed with a thin needle from which hangs a long hair of a shade matching the patient's hair, sometimes a hair borrowed from this very hair, the operator attacks the extreme edge of the eyelid between the epidermis and the slight greasy hem that ends it. The needle is connected to it in the manner of a small-point seam, the hair remaining loose and forming on the outside a loop two centimeters in diameter. When the entire eyelid is sewn in this way, a stroke of a chisel separates the hair into two rows of thick eyelashes that then just need to be rolled up using a small silver curling iron, large at most like a knitting needle. The same is done for the lower eyelid by curling the natural false eyelashes in the other direction. The patient then keeps an oil blindfold on her eyes for half a day; and the very next day there is no trace left of the operation"
1895
Also there's a small note from La Charente:
Translate: "...the operator takes a number of hairs, as long as possible, threads one into a needle, grabs the edge of the eyelid to be adorned and sew there, at the small point, the hair that must form a serie of loops that will be separated by small scissor strokes to form the eyelashes, Then, a hot iron blow gives the roll-up natural and the patient must keep for a long time- ze hours, applied to the eyes, a blindfold oiled that activates the healing of bites from the needle, - and voila!"
1908
Strangely, none of these newspapers provides a specific source of information. There's no mention of any specialist involved in this, nor the names of places where such a procedure could be performed (it seems it was done by hairdressers who had experience in stitching wigs). At the same time, the Dundee Courier, La croix and La Charente provide anatomically detailed descriptions of such procedures. La croix and The Truth are extremely conservative publications, so they could spread unverified but scandalous information. But The Truth had reputation as an "exposer" (at least in the 1880s)
These articles can't be considered as advertisement because for the most part they're disgusting, which suggests that perhaps journalists exaggerated the real events. But something about this whole story seems really disturbing to me
i’m surprised that the ugly step sister isn’t more popular on tumblr since this film truly is for the gross and perverted who at some point had a fixation on period dramas
I’m pleased that, despite its box office failure, people have turned their attention to The Ugly Stepsister.
So far, I haven’t seen any videos or articles analyzing the meanings of the characters’ names, so I thought — why not write one myself?
Agnes is our Cinderella. (Let me say right away: I don’t feel any dislike or disappointment toward this character.)
The name Agnes means “pure” or “holy” — in other words, an immaculate virgin, which directly contradicts the portrayal of Agnes in the film adaptation.
It can also mean “lamb,” a symbol with sacred significance in the Bible.
We might recall Agnes of Rome — a Christian martyr closely associated with both virginity and lamb imagery.
Elvira — there are many theories about the origin of this name, but I’m focusing on the meaning “faithful” or “trustworthy.”
Why this one in particular? At the ball, Elvira was barking and yapping — and we all know which animal is a symbol of unconditional loyalty.
Exactly. Dogs.
Alma — the name has multiple meanings, and I think all of them suit her.
The first: “young woman.” Absolutely true — she hadn’t even started her period at the time of the film.
The second: “nurturing,” “soul,” “caring.” The name is strongly tied to maternal archetypes and symbolizes warmth of spirit.
Alma in the film is empathetic, sincere, and the perfect embodiment of her name.
She’s the only one who truly loved her sister.
Prince Julian — one possible origin of the name is from the Julian family — one of the noblest in Rome.
Another ties it to the god Jupiter, the supreme deity of the Romans.
So the name itself carries status — quite literally, it’s in his blood.
Rebecca — the stepmother. The name means “charming” or “captivating,” and that perfectly fits her archetype.
Her method of survival is marriage — a path carved through appearance, speech, and posture.
Her whole life isn’t just linked to seduction — it’s built on it.
Isaac — the stableboy. The name means “he who will laugh.”
In this context, the name symbolizes a miracle, joy, and divine promise.
And importantly — he was the only one who brought joy to Agnes.
Dr. Aesthetic — I don’t think he needs much explanation.
We all know what aesthetic means, and he is its absolute embodiment.
Otto — Agnes’s father. The name means, interestingly: “wealthy,” “heritage,” “prosperity.”
Which is exactly who he was in the story — before the debts appeared.
Everything aligns perfectly!
'I want complex women characters" Y'all couldn't even handle a recently orphaned teenager being kinda rude to some random strangers who had literally just moved in her house and made her live with her father's corpse 🙄
A small detail that I really like in The ugly stepsister is what Elvira answers to Alma when they are having a picnic in the woods. While Elvira confesses her plan to swallow the tapeworm’s egg to fix her weight, Alma is rightfully horrified by what her sister is ready to do to get as beautiful as it is expected of a maid. Alma tells her that she is “sick in the head” (sorry all my quotes will be paraphrased, I watched the movie in its original version with French subtitles). Elvira takes that badly and answers something of the like “you are so childish”.
It is just one line, but it rang so true. If you have been a girl who routinely presented with a degree of gender-nonconformity, several people have accused you of being childish in your gender-nonconformity (it goes hand in hand with the “you will grow out of it”) especially if you have expressed doubt or dislike with the feminine behavior pushed on/expected of you. Embracing culturally appropriate femininity is considered as a sign of maturity while rejecting it will have you labeled as childish. I was nice that the movie acknowledged it. Even more considering that Alma is more mature than Elvira in a way. Indeed, Elvira is the one who constantly refers and defers to their mother and Alma is the one developing as an independent person from her only parent.

DYKES!!!!
While some viewers saw her final parting look as more vengeful, the expression I read on Agnes's face at the end of The Ugly Stepsister was "Yikes! I didn't wish that on you, but I can't say I'm all that sorry either, given that you attacked me with a cleaver last night. Let's enjoy never seeing each other again."
SPOILERS FOR THE UGLY STEPSISTER AHEAD
The thing about The Ugly Stepsister that stuck with me the longest (after watching it twice) was the subtle but noticeable way the movie progressively spent more time on each body horror scene than the one before it.
The nose job was shot with relative distance and short duration, helping the viewer quickly push the painful scene to the back of their mind and move to the next scene.
The eyelash scene was much longer and more involved, framing-wise, putting you in Elvira's head (quite literally, given the perspective shot being taken from her eye in an extreme close up), but even then the scene ends soon after the viewer starts to really squirm.
Even the chopping off of her toes does what it can to give the viewer some level of escape by finishing the job with faraway shots that hide the rest of the damage after we get that prolonged shot of the cut toes up close.
Each of these scenes, while brutal and painful and unpleasant to endure even from the safety of our couches, doesn't show us the full extent of what happens. Sure, we get a good look, and we know what else happens after the scene cuts itself short, but we aren't forced to sit through every second. (partially for time, I agree, but I have another point to make, i promise)
There is one scene that doesn't shy away from the full process for even a second, and that is the removal of the tapeworm. That one we get to see in all its disgusting glory, and it's the only scene where the body horror focuses on undoing her painful transformation, instead of furthering it.
The way I interpret this is how easy it can be for us to look away from and ignore/downplay the amount of pain and discomfort we put ourselves through in the name of beauty. How many times have people waved away any concerns with a dismissive "it only hurts for a little bit" or an "it's not that bad" or even an "it's all worth it to look this good"? How many times do the real life damages and risks of all of these practices and procedures get swept under the rug or written off and ignored?
The act of unlearning this belief, however, is something that can't be overlooked. Purging yourself of that lie, of that hunger, is a long and difficult ordeal that feels like it can take forever but will ultimately save you in the end.
Much like Elvira expelling the tapeworm, the steps of expelling such a deeply rooted obsession with beauty is something that isn't over with quickly and cleanly. You can't cut corners or pretend it didn't happen or that it just wasn't that bad, you have to sit through it in its entirety so you can come out the other side free of that parasite. It hurts, it takes time, and it relies on the help and support of unconditional love.
it's what's inside that counts (tapeworms!)

"the girl in The Ugly Stepsister isn't even ugly"
Yeah I think that's part of the point.
"Demi Moore still looks good why was The Substance like that"
Because that's part of the point.
"why was-"
That's the point!
