Theory tells us what should happen. Practice reveals what actually happens. Progress begins where the two disagree.

This sign made me smile because it captures one of the greatest paradoxes of science.

Theory gives us confidence. Practice gives us humility.

We build elegant models, formulate precise equations, and make careful predictions. Then reality quietly reminds us that nature has no obligation to follow our expectations. A failed experiment isn’t always a failure—it can be an invitation to see something we weren’t looking for.

History is full of moments where scientists weren’t rewarded for being right. They were rewarded for paying attention when they were wrong.

Penicillin was discovered because a contaminated petri dish wasn’t thrown away. Microwave ovens were born from a melted chocolate bar. The afterglow of the Big Bang was first dismissed as annoying background noise. Again and again, breakthroughs emerged from curiosity meeting the unexpected.

Perhaps wisdom isn’t knowing all the answers.

Perhaps wisdom is recognizing that every unexpected result carries a question worth asking.

As Louis Pasteur famously observed, “Chance favors the prepared mind.” Accidents don’t change the world on their own. Curious minds do.
