An inventor from Togo in West Africa, Kodjo Afate Gnikou, has made a 3D printer using parts from broken scanners, computers, printers and other e-waste. The fully functional printer cost $100, a fraction of the cost of others currently on the market, and saves environmentally damaging waste from reaching landfill sites. The five winners of the 2019 Aga Khan Award for Architecture who will share US$ 1 million between them includes Alioune Diop University, Bambey, Senegal. The Award is given to projects that set new standards of excellence in architecture, planning practices, historic preservation and landscape architecture.

Revitalisation of Muharraq in Bahrain which highlights the World Heritage site’s pearling history
Arcadia Education Project, in South Kanarchor, Bangladesh is a modular structure that takes a novel approach to a riverine site that is often flooded for five months every year
Palestinian Museum, in Birzeit, which crowns a terraced hill overlooking the Mediterranean and is the recipient of the LEED Gold certification because of its sustainable construction
Public Spaces Development Programme, in the Republic of Tatarstan, a programme that, to date, has improved 328 public spaces all over Tatarstan
