guys, i love you all a lot and so on, but please ;; fact check things before you reblog them. today alone i have come across not one, but 7 posts by mostly different people, reblogging and signal boosting all kinds of things, from “dude who set himself on fire burning his nike sneakers” over “link to compliments in message leads to being tracked by human trafficking and sold into prostitution” all the way to “the sand cat is going extinct there’s only a handful left uwu”. here’s the good news: it’s all fabricated. ( and the sand cat’s conservation status is “least concern” ) the bad news: God save us from people who mean well. while nobody minds a nice, new, urban legend ( gotta admit,  aids-rat and spider cluster are a bit early 2000s ) it has a much more sever effect than that, especially on platforms such as tumblr; it spreads misinformation. and once that misinformation is out there, you cannot get it back, even if you delete the original post. ( think of it as a virus; patient zero is gone, but the virus is out there and continues to spread ) in this case, our virus is misinformation. and while the intention behind sharing and signal boosting the content is a good one and is to alert people and keep them save — the result, aside from leaving people misinformed, is scaremongering, which, even if unintentional, fuels paranoia and can lead to the “The Boy who cried wolf” effect — if people keep spreading misinformation and fake news long enough, nobody will pay attention to a real threat once it emerges as they will merely dismiss it as yet another hoax or false fact. this is, after all, the internet. everybody and their mum can make up a story about how their son ended up in hospital and almost died, only for medical staff to discover that the the lil gherkins on McD burgers the kids ate were loaded with formaldehyde, not to mention the neighbour’s kid that ended up with severe internal bleeding because the ice cubes they got at walmart were contaminated with bleach. if you are posting or reblogging things, it means you are already online — and with that, merely one step away from fact-checking shit. in 95% of cases, it takes you less than 2 minutes to find out if what you are about to reblog is true or false. your best bet is SNOPES. cheers.
