                it   barely   felt   like   any   time   at   all   had   passed    since  zach’s  days  of  running  around  with  his  own  group  of  assholes.    funny  how  some  memories  could  feel  so    far  away    while  others  only  stayed  two  steps  behind  him,  breathing  down  his  neck  no  matter  how  long  it  had  been.    the  way  dustin  spoke  about  these  supposed  saviors  made  his  stomach  turn.    it  was  almost  like  hearing  himself  all  those  years  ago.    although  the  lines  between    good  and  bad    were  now  blurred,  they  still  existed.    bad  news  was  bad  news  was  bad  news.            

                ❛    by  the  sounds  of  it,  leaving  was    the  best  thing    she  could’ve  done.      ❜        zach  didn’t  care  if  that  comment  put  him  on  dustin’s  bad  side.    the  decisions  brandi  made  were  the  best  for  her  family,  and  he  wasn’t  about  to  let  this  kid  think  anything  otherwise  —  especially  of  dustin’s  own  mother.        ❛    if  your  dad  was  off  fighting  some  war,  why  wouldn’t  he  tell  your  mom?    why  keep  that  shit  a  secret?    from  what  your  mom  told  me,  that  baby  was    no  accident.    I  think  whatever  you  dad  got  himself  into  with  these  folks  —-    ❜        a  dead-ended  pause.    zach  hated  to  say  it  out  loud.    this  kid,  his  mom  —  they  all  had  hope  that  skip  was  still  somehow  alive  out  there  waiting  to  be  found.    and  maybe  he  was  —  but  again,  maybe  he  wasn’t.    his  own  group  of  assholes  sure  as  hell  wasn’t.        ❛    look,  we’re  gonna  search  high  and  low  for  this  dude,  alright?    what  are  we  up  against  if  we  go  confronting  these  saviors?    you  thing  we  should  stay  back  or  go  knockin’  on  their  gates?    ❜

                           ‘   brandi   .   you can just call her brandi   .    ‘    it was a subtle sign of his hostility----  how he never referred to brandi as his mom   ,    but by her name   .   he liked when others did the same   ,   but they hardly did   .   ‘   i’d think you’d know her name   ,   since it sounds like you’re already her bitch   .   ‘  dustin’s opinion of zach currently wasn’t too high   .   ‘  i get there’s not a lot of girls around   ,   but going after a single mother   ?    i wonder what your search history looked like    .      do you prefer the term MILF or cougar   ?     ‘     he’s only somewhat joking   ,   but he truly does doubt zach is acting from the goodness of his heart    .      that & he’s just permanently scarred from his memories of his friends being attracted to his mother   .   your mom jokes used to be the worst     .    ‘  believe her if you want   ,   i don’t give a shit   .   i’ll prove it to all of you   .   ‘

                one   click,   then   another,   and   then   another.    most  of  the  radio  stations  were  dead  by  now,  filled  with  static,  if  not  completely  blacked  out  with  silence.    zach    hated    silence.    growing  up  in  atlanta,  there  was  no  such  thing  as  quiet.    there  were  cars  and  sirens  and  people  living  their  lives,  all  that  noise  filling  the  space  in  his  head  where  thoughts  never  seemed  to  shut  the  hell  up.    company  made  it  better,  even    quiet    company,  but  still  the  silence  drove  him  mad.

                that  offer  of  a  cigarette  was  enough  to  pull  his  anxiously  searching  fingertips  back  to  reality,  busying  them  with  the  task  of  nabbing  a  smoke  and  popping  the  car’s  built-in  lighter  into  place.    gray  eyes  wandered  to  the  road  in  front  of  them  as  he  waited,  noting  the    same  old    scenery  they’d  seen  for  miles  before  glancing  dustin’s  way.    it  wasn’t  fair  for  a  kid  like  him  to  have  to  live  this  hard  already.    in  a  way,  zach  could  relate.    though  he  never  had  to  search  for  food  or  keep  his  family  safe  from    armed  strangers,    he  did  have  to  work  and  fend  for  himself  younger  than  most other kids.    but  these  days,  there  was  no  rich  or  poor.    the  playing  field  had  been  mercilessly  leveled.    now,  it  was  either  live  hard  or  die.

                ❛    don’t  worry  about  cars  man,  I’ve  been  workin’  on  these  things  since  I  was  a  kid.    I  had  a  2006  dodge  charger  for  a  while,  me  and  my  brother  fixed  that  thing  up  from  a    junkyard    before  all  this  shit  went  down.    had  it  for  a  while  too,  but  I  lost  it  when  I  got  separated  from  another  group.    ❜        the  memory  of  his  days  at  the  prison  was  too  fond  to  dwell  on,  and  zach  found  himself  quickly  changing  the  subject  to  more  pressing  matters.        ❛    but  uh  —-—  who  are  these    savior  dudes    I  keep  hearing  about?    they  some  sort’a  freaky  cult  or  somethin’?    ❜

                           he wont lie   :   his heart warms   over in nostalgia at the story of fixing cars   .     he used to live for that shit   ,    back when there weren’t grannies with their decomposed titties trying to snap at him    .  skip was a mechanic before all this bullshit   ,    and dustin vividly remembers getting to go the shop every day after school so skip could teach him something new   .   this persisted well into the apocalypse   ,    because it was the only human thing they really had left    ,    but dustin never learned how to do more than fix it when it’s down    .   he keeps all his personal heart-felt shit to himself   ,    though    ,   because in hindsight he realizes it doesn’t even matter   .   that   ,    and he’s trying to conserve his oxygen    .   ‘  stone-cold badasses my old man worked with   .   ‘   you can see the inconsistencies between brandi’s point of view and dustin’s  ,   one of which being dustin’s use of the word WITH   ,    when brandi likely would have used FOR   .    ‘   he was up there with the big guys   ,    the guys who worked for negan   .   negan’s the boss   .   ‘   he was so much more   ,   really    ,   but he didn’t want to get into the cult-like bullshit that went on at the sanctuary    .   it was weird   ,   even for him    .    ‘  they were fucked   ,    though    .    atleast brandi thinks so   .   ‘    

‘   they take supplies from other communities   .   i don’t know much about it ‘cause i never saw it   ,   even though negan offered i go with my pa’ one time   .   ‘   brandi didn’t let him   .   ‘  they also punish their own when they step out of line  .   thieves   ,   fights  ,   whatever   .   brandi didn’t like it so we bailed   ,   i guess   .   didn’t get why till she started ballooning up   ,   but now i get it   .    i wouldn’t want to have a kid there either   .   ‘

    you  can’t  help  it  ―  you  shove  him .    you  were  always  better  at  fighting  with  your  hands  instead  of  your  words .    you  shove  him  for  the  harsh  words  about  daniel ,  for  the  way  he  assumes  you’d  steal  him  from  your  sister .    the  way  he  assumes  you’re  unhappy  with  dirk .    and  then  you  poke  your  index   finger  into  his  chest  and  push  him  back  towards  your  door .    ❝  maybe  he  wouldn’t .    but  wouldn’t  angela  love  to  know  you’re  in  here ?    maybe  i  should  call  her ,  remind  her  who  her  boyfriend  is  spending  time  with .    she  too  boring  for  you ?    too  uptight ?    i  bet  you  wish  she  was  me .  ❞

    ❝  whatever  makes  it  easier  for  you  to  sleep  at  night .  ❞    a  sneer  in  his  direction ,    although  you  refuse  to  take  the  bait  when  he  steals  your  cigarette .    ❝  angela  hates  smoking  almost  as  much  as  she  hates  me .    makes  me  surprised  she  hasn’t  dumped  you  on  your  ass .    or  maybe  you’re  just  her  toy .    the  only  way  she  can  think  of  to  hurt  our  dad  as  bad  as  he’s  hurt  us .    i’ll  bet  she  doesn’t  care  about  you  at  all .  ❞    there’s  really  no  need  to  try  and  wreck  their  relationship ,  but  it  all  spills  out  before  you  can  stop  it .    you  don’t  want  her  to  be  happy .

    ❝  we  can’t  just  leave  beau  downstairs  by  himself !  ❞    you  don’t  follow  him ,  standing  only  to  watch  him  retreat  up  the  stairs .    you  wish  he  was  better  at  reading  cues .    you  wish  he  and  lilith  weren’t  so  alike .    ❝  lilith  will  blame  it  on  me  if  you  take  it  and  i’ll  be  grounded .    do  you  care  about  that  or  just  your  stupid  smokes ?  ❞

    ❝  so  she’s  got  you  fighting  her  battles  now ?  ❞    you meet  his  gaze  with  a  quirked  brow  and  a  smirk  on  blood  red  lips .    ❝  if  she  has  a  problem  she  should  talk  to  me  about  it .  ❞    you  sit  by  your  window ,  trading  the  stale  air  outside  for  the  smoke  of  the  cigarette  dangling  from  your  fingers .

    ❝  you’re  lecturing  me  about  therapy ?    you’re  the  one  who  steals  to  deal  with  your  daddy  issues .  ❞

    ❝  you  know  lilith  doesn’t  talk  to  me  about  that .  ❞    maybe  your  voice  is  sharper  than  it  should  be ,  maybe  you  shouldn’t  get  so  green  when  he  mentions  your  sister  ―  everyone  knows  they’re  a  better  match  than  you  two  are .    so ,  instead  of  comforting  your  boyfriend  like  you  know  you  should ,  you  sit  back  on  the  love seat  with  your  arms  crossed  over  your  chest ,  quiet  as  you  eye  beau  playing  with  his  toys .

    ❝  it  does  look  that  bad .  ❞    eyes  search  his ,  moving  to  hold  a  frozen  bag  of  peas  to  his  jaw .    ❝  i  just  hate  seeing  you  hurt ,  babe .    i  know  you’re  just  trying  to  help  your  mom …  that  doesn’t  mean  i  have  to  like  it .  ❞    you  lean  in  and  press  a  gentle  kiss  to  the  tip  of  his  nose .    ❝  caught  dad  staring  at  kaylynn  again ,  by  the  way .    he  thinks  lilith  and  i  can’t  see  it .  ❞    to  be  fair ,  you  didn’t  figure  it  out  until  she  told  you .

     a  frown  parts  glossed  lips ,  sitting  back  just  enough  to  look  more  directly  at  him .    ❝  i  don’t  care  about  the  other  guy .    i  care  about  you ,  dustin ,  and  you’re  hurt .  ❞    you  finish  cleaning  the  cut  on  his  eyebrow ,  fingers  resting  on  his  temple  while  you  look  at  him  with  concern  clear  in  emerald  irises .    ❝  you  have  to  stop  getting  in  fights  like  this .    it’s  not  good  for  you .  ❞
