Deer Head
I guess I should back up.. I'm posting photos but haven't explained what I'm doing!!
I decided to make a light that goes on when I get home. I live in the basement (aka the lady lair), and it can get really dark once the sun goes down.. plus, there aren't any light switches near the stairs to go downstairs, so walking down the stairs can be really scary and dangerous. Jesus told me about this software called pepakura, where you can take 3-d models and it will flatten it out and let you print it on paper. It's basically a better version of the 123d make's folded panels thing.
so I found this REALLY awesome instructable that teaches you how to take 3d models from thingiverse or the 123d website, and cut down on the hexigons, and then take it into pepakura and get plans to print the object.

it had a pdf of deer head all ready to go, but this will be really great to refer back to whenever I want to do another paper model from a 3d model.
So I'm going to make this deer head out of paper, put a light on the inside of it, and using by IFTTT and the cloud littlebit, I'll automate it so that when I come home, the light inside will turn on, and when I leave the house, the light will turn off.
progress so far!! it's going easier than expected.
pieces getting cut out!
tests for my deer head
I used the laser cutter to outline the pieces, so it'll be easier to fold and cut. I used the settings of 17 power, 15 frequency and 50 speed. I then cut the pieces out by hand.

Weasley Clock
The original inspiration for my clock was this project on the littlebits website:
http://littlebits.cc/projects/the-dad-clock
it could definitely use a makeover, but the idea was really cool and I think it would be fun to have to know where your housemates are or if a professor is around campus or if they already left to go home. I began to look for other "Weasley clock" ideas online and there ended up being a handful! They're all done so differently, with different technology and stuff but each has its own charms as well as problems. This guy managed to get multiple people on the clock by using different thicknesses for the servo:

This one is pretty clearly structured but very technology heavy:

this project seems the most professional with clear, step by step instructions on how to make it:

this one is the most clock-like:

I think I might actually try to do this! the electronic part is a little daunting but I think I can work through it :)

also, I figured out how to make your forms hollow in 123d make if you don't want it to print it solidly. if you look at the left bar, and click on modify form, the bar on the bottom pops up and you can select to make it hollow. then, you can choose how hollow to make it (the lines show how thick the outside would be).

so today I scanned this pear using the digitizer. the 3d model turned out really good! I touched the stem up a little bit in meshmixer. and now, to get my hands on enough plexiglass to print this thing.
cool stuff
