A manifestation of lines as a fundamental part or consequence of a design 

Line is one of the most fundamental elements in design and visual art. It represents the direction and movement of a dot/point in space. Once again, I chose to look towards nature for inspiration. 

There are two sets of lines working together in this composition. First, there are the lines in the grain of the wood that are running parallel to one another. Second, there are the implied lines that are not actually drawn on the image but exist where one area of color meets another. The large black gaps between the wooden floorboards imply this type of line. The juxtaposition of the two types of lines demonstrates contrast and variation in line weight. Finally, the direction in which they are moving from left to right implies a positive, upward movement.

When dots are aligned in a manner in which they “work together” they can become lines and curves. They can form and define complex shapes, patterns, or textures. Dots can even imply direction and movement. I chose to photograph an example of this demonstrated in nature. 

This is a little succulent that sits on my desk everyday while I work. In the first photo, the dots are arranged in a way that defines the movement of the plant. If we were to eliminate all other elements/objects in the photo other than the dots, we would still see the shape and movement of the succulent’s “leaves”. In the second photo, we have a point in the center of the succulent. This center, within a circle, replicates the basic “bullseye”. Your eye is subconsciously drawn to the center of the plant, even though it is not the center of the photo. This use of “point” can quickly draw someone’s attention to a particular part of your work without necessarily placing it in the center of your composition.

Week 1 Assignment: Post an image of something predominately visual thats has impacted your visual literacy.

Include a little paragraph explaining how this image impacted your visual literacy.

These are the result of the visual impact the landscape had on me. It is important that we stop and look at the world around us instead of commuting from A to B everyday. Currently all the photos on my page reflect this notion. This is a direct reflection of the visual stimuli I encountered. Even a mattress, as out of place and mundane as it may appear, has a story. “How did it get there? Is it from the shack in the distance?” There are forces moving in this world other than ourselves. Sometimes I like to stop and meditate on the notion “How did we both get here. The mattress and I. What was its journey that led us to this moment?”. I try to see the world, as taxing and horrible as it may feel presently, through “rose colored” lenses in this series.
