Vizcaya Museum & Gardens
The Vizcaya Museum & Gardens is a historical landmark located in Miami, Florida. It was the winter home of International Harvester Vice-President James Deering and provides a glimpse of a vanished lifestyle in America during the early turn of the 20th century. Built between 1914 and 1916 it was designed in the style of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque villas that Deering had visited, and adapted to the subtropical climate of South Florida. Originally Vizcaya was an estate of 180 acres and included a farm area, designed to resemble a typical northern Italian farm, with dairy, poultry houses, mule stable, greenhouse, machine shop, paint & carpentry workshop, and staff residences. This house was built to have all the modern conveniences of the early 20th century including central heating, an automatic electric telephone switchboard, two elevators, refrigeration, a central vacuuming system, and a fire control system. Following Deering’s death in 1925, and in 1926, the Deering family transferred ownership of the property to the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Augustine, Florida, and nearby Mercy Hospital, In the 19050′s they transferred ownership of the house, and surrounding gardens, to Miami-Dade County, which operated the residence as a public museum starting in 1953. Vizcaya is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is a designated National Historic Landmark. (Information derived from the Vizcaya Tour Guide).
