Y/n muttered the phrase over and over again, like a prayer, under her breath as she flipped through her textbook, searching for the one titled ‘Nerves’. 

Her flashcards were sprawled across her desk, pages of notes spread across the surface, scribbled on and highlighted and drawn on.

She hated studying for tests.

No matter how much revision she did, it never felt like enough.  And to make it worse, she’d completely forgotten about her tea and it had now gone cold. Perfect.

The girl groaned internally as she held the door downstairs slam shut, the noise travelling through the building.

Trust her roommate to never be quiet. 

“Y/n?” Lando called up the stairs, his voice echoing through the apartment, “I’m home,” 

She sighed, dropping her textbook with a dramatic thud onto her desk. If only prices for apartments hadn’t been so expensive for University student. 

Then, she wouldn’t have to be stuck with someone who didn’t seem to have a volume button.

Y/n could already feel the migraine starting to well up behind her eyes - of course it had to be today of all days that he decided to come home late, all loud and annoying.

She didn’t even bother standing up, or replying. Lando was somewhere downstairs, kicking off his shoes and dropping his keys into the bowl like it was an Olympic sport.

“Can you just be quiet for once in your life? I’m trying to study, here,” she muttered under her breath, rolling her eyes.

There was no point even trying to bring it up to him anyways, he wouldn’t listen.

“Live life a little, jeez,” Lando stuck his head round the door, staring at her textbooks and notes in what seemed like disgust. 

Yet, his expression, it seemed…different from his usual cocky, smug one.

He shuffled awkwardly, his hand jumping to the back of his neck.

“What is it?” the girl rolled her eyes. She didn’t have time to wait for him to say whatever he was thinking.

“Listen,” he cleared his throat, “I need a favour. Like a big one,”

Y/n snorted before she could even stop herself.

“A favour? And what makes you think I’d do anything for you? Least of all, for free,” she scoffed at the thought, rolling her eyes with an amused smirk. 

Lando rolled his eyes, the retort dying in his throat. He needed this, and snarking back at her definitely wouldn’t help.

“So, uh, my parents…I sorta…kinda told them I have a girlfriend,” he muttered, scratching the back of his neck.

“Alright. And?” 

“Well, they’re kinda coming over for a few days, and…I kinda need you to pretend to be her. My girlfriend, I mean,”

Y/n froze for a second in her chair. 

“What? Lando, are you serious? I’m not- no,” she stared at him like he’d grown a third arm. The fact that he’d even considered her to do that was ludicrous.

“This is insane. No, you’re insane,” Y/n pointed an accusatory finger at him, her eyes wide. He was crazy, it was official. Her roommate had lost it.

“No, wait, hear me out,” Lando interjected, stepping closer into her room, hands raised in defence, and voice slightly more pleading.

“I-It’s just that I told them i had a girlfriend because they were all asking these questions about my dating life and they weren’t stopping, I panicked, okay?” 

“And that’s my issue, how?” the girl stared at him in bewilderment. There was no way this guy thought she’d do that.

“Please? I’ll owe you, like, a million favours. I can’t deal with them going on about it for ages if I don’t show up with someone,” 

Y/n studied his face for a moment.

She’d never seen him…well, this unconfident, for once. He wasn’t the brash, annoying guy she usually saw him as.

Part of her would rather he’d just go back to that.

“Seriously, Y/n. Just for a few days, I’ll stay quiet while you’re studying, I’ll do the chores, whatever you want,” 

“Seriously?” she raised a brow. 

Part of her did want to give on, just for the sake of that peace and quiet she so desired.

Y/n hesitated, her eyes narrowing as she considered his offer. Lando on his best behaviour? It was tempting.

“Fine-,” 

His face lit up immediately, cutting her off as he stepped forwards. “You’re the best, Y/n. I swear I’ll make it up to you, you’re literally saving my life,” 

Y/n gave him a dry smile, mentally preparing herself for the weirdness that would come with pretending to be his girlfriend for the weekend. 

The doorbell rang just as Y/n finished smoothing out all the creases in her beige sweater, one of her personal favourites.

Lando had stuck true to his word, preparing her toast, though slightly burnt, in the morning.

She sent a glance over to her ‘boyfriend’ who was pacing the living room like he was about to drop the news that he’d gotten his girlfriend pregnant or something.

The girl shook her head, her cheeks painted pink at the thought.

“Are you sure about this?” she asked for what felt like the hundredth time, staring at him warily. She had no idea why she’d agreed to this…deal.

“Please, Y/n,” his tone was pleading, “I need this, okay? I don’t want them to think I’m a liar, it’s just a few days,”

She watched as his head snapped up from the floor, rushing over to the door.

“Shit, okay,” Lando swallowed, running a hand through his curls, “remember what I told you - we’ve been dating for a while now, you like, um, coffee-,”

“What?! I hate coffee-,”

“Just go with it! Please?” he looked on the verge of begging as she rolled her eyes, sighing.

“Go on, then,”

The door swung open with an enthusiasm Y/n knew Lando was faking, his parents gushing as soon as they stepped in.

They both had kind faces, his mother with a stark resemblance to her son.

Y/n couldn’t help the slight smile on her lips, watching as she pulled Lando into a hug, wrapping her arms round him.

“And you must be the girlfriend,” the older woman smiled, extending her arms for a hug as Y/n froze, before she nodded slightly.

“Uh, yeah, that’s me,” she offered weakly, squished into the hug.

It was oddly comforting.

“You’re even prettier than Lando said,” Cisca gushed, leaning back to take her in.

A blush spread through her cheeks at the words as she sent a look over to her ‘boyfriend’.

“So, how long have you two been dating?” Lando’s father asked as the four of them walking towards the living room. Lando guided Y/n to the living room, his movements almost robotic.

She would’ve laughed if she didn’t get silence as a payment for the act.

“Uh, 6 months,”

“8 months,”

Lando and Y/n froze, looking at each other.

“Oh, right, of course,” the man spoke before she could, nudging her slightly with his elbow, “I didn’t assume the, uh, talking stage counted as dating,”

Y/n looked over. Lando’s ears were red, his hands clenched.

It was a miracle his parents hadn’t clocked his lie already.

Dinner. At a restaurant. With Lando’s parents. Pretending she was his girlfriend.

Fuck.

Okay.

She hadn’t prepared herself for it, least of all with other people as she stood in her room, pulling out dress after dress.

Restaurants weren’t really her thing - they were crowded, loud and full of people she didn’t know.

Finally, she decided on an soft, light blue dress, the heels matching, setting her a few inches taller.

Y/n dragged the lipglose tube over her lips, her lashes layered with mascara and cheeks with a light, natural layer of blush. She looked beautiful.

“Y/n, baby, you done?”

She almost ignored Lando as he stood at the bottom of the stairs, calling up to her.

‘Baby’. It felt unnatural.

“Uh, yeah,” she cleared her throat, the uneasiness obvious, “I’m almost done,”

Gathering her stuff, she dropped her makeup into a purse, slinging it over her shoulder as she slowly walked down the stairs.

“You good?” Lando leaned down, a closeness he’d never had with her before.

Y/n nodded. “Fine,”

Her voice almost betrayed her uncertainty as her eyes dropped to take in his outfit. A white, crisp shirt, black dress trousers. It was a stark difference to his usual clothing.

Lando looked…well, he looked handsome.

“You can stop staring, I’m not gonna change your life or anything,” she quipped, rolling her eyes.

“Well, I don’t know about that,” he teased, stepping toward her, “you look great, seriously,”

“Thanks,” Y/n muttered, trying not to let her nerves show.

She didn’t quite know what to do with the compliment. Was it just part of the act? Was it more?

There was an awkward pause as he reached for her hand, interlocking his fingers with hers as his parents appeared behind them, smiling.

The act was back on.

Lando stepped in front of her, opening the passenger door as his parents slid into the back.

“I can open my door myself, y’know,” Y/n’s voice was haughty but still friendly as she sat into her seat, swallowing,

“Just go with it,”

Dinner felt forced.

It was polite conversation, a few small remarks, before his parents moved onto Lando, speaking to him.

The three of them were so easy with each other, idly chatting, laughing, like she didn’t even exist.

She had been asked more times than she could count if she enjoyed her time at university, if she liked living with Lando, what her plans were for the future. 

“I’m gonna go,” Y/n stood up, everyone on the table pausing to look at her as she turned, muttering the last half of the sentence under her breath.

“Just need a breather,”

She didn’t turn back to see if anyone had listened or even clocked she wasn’t there, making her way to the bathroom.

It wasn’t right. Pretending?

It was lying. And the atmosphere was tense, and awkward, and-

The door of the bathroom opened, snapping her from her thoughts.

“Y/n?! Oh…Y/n,” Lando’s panicked died down as his eyes met hers. She hadn’t even realised she was crying.

But she didn’t push him away or fight back when he wrapped his strong arms round her, her face buried into the crook of his neck.

She didn’t care that his hand messed up her hair when he placed his palm on her head, the movement soothing and calming.

“It’s okay,” he whispered, his voice taking on an unnatural softness, “you’re okay, darling. It’s just an act, yeah? You’re okay, I’m sorry we came here,”

His hand moved up and down Y/n’s back, giving her the comfort she so badly needed.

Her makeup was probably smudged, mascara running down her cheeks as she hiccuped the last of her tears.

“I-I just don’t know what to say. Or how to pretend,” she sniffled, rubbing her eyes as she peered into the mirror.

A woman emerged from the bathroom, shooting her a sympathetic look as she left.

Even strangers assumed they were together.

“It’s okay, yeah? A little longer, you’ve done so well so far,” Lando whispered, cupping her face as he whipped her tears away, helping dab the smudges from her cheeks.

Y/n nodded, gently taking the napkin from his hand to clean her face.

“C’mon, let’s go back out,” he said, reaching a hand for hers, more gentle this time.

Maybe she could go on a bit more.
