transfer student! vivien hugo x reader
sfw β’ fluff β’ university au β’ hint of slow burn
sypnosis: you've heard some things about the new guy in your art class, vivien hugo. what are the chances that you're paired with him for a project? better yet, what are the chances of you falling for him?
a/n: reader is gender neutral and not too much of this story is proofread lol this idea came to me while listening to the song selected so i KNEW i had to write this out or id forget
lower east is in reference to manhattan, ny also, it is implied that reader is well off and comes from good money! anyway, thats enough of my yap session, enjoy!
september. fourth week of the first semester and you seemed to be settling in well. the professors were still lenient and not at the nagging stage quite yet, a decent sized friend group, but most of all, you really enjoyed your classes. well, art to be more specific. ever since you were young you'd always been creative when it came down to anything relating to painting or drawing.
hence why your parents helped you look for the best school in the lower east. life was nice, even nicer when you got your first apartment off campus. why risk having a rowdy roommate when you could be by yourself? anyways, today was no different. you walked to class with the company of your most recent friend, chigiri, as his class was on the same hall. he was decent compared to half of his teammates on the soccer team.
"hey [name], have you heard about the new transfer student, vivien hugo? heard he's coming in from france."
'vivien hugo' you thought to yourself. he's the one everyone's been raving about in their hallway conversations.
"somewhat. i've caught wind of said transfer student, but no ones ever mentioned his name. speaking of, how'd you get his name?"
"coach ego. apparently he's joining the team as well. iβm not sure why anyone would leave a place like france for new york, but what do i know?" you two laughed and continued with the conversation bouncing from topic to topic before stopping outside your class.
"see you around?" chigiri quipped, a tilt of his head accompanied with a small smirk.
"by the bleachers after practice." you two parted ways, a sigh of relief escaping from your lips as you were a few minutes early meaning getting a good seat.
some minutes had crawled by with a good amount of students piling in before the professor started with the lecture. you weren't surprised by the fact that a project was being thrown your way, but you loathed the concept of having a partner. you weren't too social with the exception of chigiri, isagi, and a few others. itβs not that you were antisocial, but you enjoyed having your space.
just because you were in one of the best schools didn't mean anything. the chances of you get a lousy partner were slim but not quite zero. you were so zoned out, already writing a mental email to professor noa begging him to allow you to work alone that you didn't notice the slight tap on your shoulder.
you flinched, already annoyed at the fact that you were being touched, tuming your head to get a proper look at the stranger. oh damn...
"you're [name], right? im viven. we're working together for the next two weeks." he looked down at you with onyx eyes that seemed to be void of any emotion and the most luscious lashes that any model would kill for. not to mention that the man was huge. he wore a deep red sweater, close to the shade of destiny bordeaux, with a white button up underneath yet all of those layers did nothing to hide how built he was. "...hello?"
no way were you staring at the transfer student already.
"my apologies, and yes, that is me. you're the new student, correct?"
"i am. i"m also joining the soccer team this year."
you hummed, moving your things to make room for him. he seemed harmless, although you couldn't help but feel intimidated by his presence. did everyone else feel like this or was it his looks that kept them staring? hypocritical, sure, but who cares. you'd be lying if you said that you didn't want to know more about the mystery student. well, vivien.
class flew by with you and vivien making conversation about the project, throwing around concepts and bouncing off of each other's ideas until something clicked. you had already sent a message to chigiri about the somewhat unfortunate string of events. its not too unfortunate since you're partnered with the transfer student who seems to be just as passionate as you.
"may i?" you glanced up at viven with an eyebrow slightly lifted.
"if we're working together then it would be smart to have your contact, yes?"
"o-oh, right! my apologies."
(later in the day)
after a five minute walk from the train station you finally arrived at your building, giving the kind receptionist that youβve grown used to a small smile before stepping into the elevator. the weight of your day sat heavy on your shoulders with the small pile of assignments listed on your agenda. itβs something that you probably shouldβve seen coming as college professors arenβt lenient for long unless theyβre old or take you in as a teacherβs pet. the machine stopped at your floor with a small chime and you couldnβt be happier. it was almost four, giving you an hour and some change before vivienβs arrival to get started on the project. you had already cleaned up the previous night so there wasnβt much left to do aside from tidy up and fold some laundry.
the moment you stepped foot in your apartment you were greeted by the sound of a small purr and something warm rubbing against your leg. βhello to you, too.β laughing at the small remnants of cat hair sticking to your pants. if the aroma of pumpkin spice from the diffuser didnβt greet you at the door you knew that your cat would. βyou mind helping me with some laundry?β although the fur ball did nothing but roll around on your clothing the entire time.
knock knock. no answer. knock knock again.
you shot up from your spot on your bed completely oblivious to the fact that you had invited vivien over. the door swung open with a slew of apologies ready to spill at the tip of your tongue, but nothing came out as you looked at him. up at him. how the hell did he tower over you while sitting down and standing up??? what were they feeding him in france and how could you get your hands on it???
βuhmββ
βno worries. practice started a little late so my apologies.β itβs almost scary how he knew that you were about to apologize. either youβre easy to predict or heβs one hell of a mind reader. βitβs okay, i wasnβt doing much of anything. come in.β
he stepped inside wearing the schoolβs hoodie with a pair of sweats and a small brown bag from the local cafe. even after two hours of practice he still carried the scent of sandalwood and old books. a scent that you could get used to.
βwhere would you like to set up?β
βmy room is fine. i have plenty of space in case we spend the night throwing pieces of paper around.β and you couldβve sworn you saw the corners of his mouth perk up. almost like he wanted to smile. the first fifteen minutes were quiet yet peaceful. a comfortable silence with a few stole glances mainly coming from your side. the man was beautiful.
his burgundy hair that resembled a grown out wolfcut with heavy strands covering his forehead, long lashes that gave him a feminine touch, and not to mention his perfect lips. your eyes traced over the shape of the, silently admiring and questioning why he wasnβt on someoneβs runway.
β[name]β
shit, he caught me.
βdid you want one?β
phew. you could feel your heart slowing down with relief as he held the paper bag in your direction. inside were a good amount of what appeared to be chocolate covered eclairs. mustβve been his favorite.
βthank you, vivien.β you took one before biting into the sweet treat that was still surprisingly warm. the two of you didnβt speak much afterwards, but he was good company. the golden rays of sunset were long gone with the sky painted a deep mix of dark purple and blue, indicating that nightfall was slowly seeping in.
βitβs almost a quarter to nine, i suppose iβll get going. see you tomorrow?β
βyeah. let me see you out.β the both of you walked to the door, vivien muttering a small βgoodnight [name].β before disappearing down the hall. that night you stared up at the ceiling replaying the small moment over and over.
βvivien?β it was now night three of you two working together. youβve grown accustomed to him and his little quirks. honestly it was a little funny hearing him mutter βbeep beep focusβ to himself when he caught himself drifting.
βyes?β βwhat made you move here? to the lower east? it isnβt paris, but iβm sure lyon is beautiful.β that, and wellβ¦ itβs france for crying out loud.
βnew beginnings, i suppose, but iβm here on a scholarship. i arrived a little before the semester started. i never saw myself staying outside from college, but itβs my destiny.β huh? destiny?
βwhat is that supposed to mean?β now you had more questions than answers. what was this man on about?
he had the audacity to let the question linger in the air and go quiet as he resumed to sketching something out. maybe itβs up for interpretation? or maybe itβs something that would make sense later on?
you didnβt expect him to be so complex.
as the days passed, the deadline grew closer, and so did you and vivien. hell, he even chuckled once or twice. you learned that he had a sister, had some friends back home, but what choked you up was the fact that he read blank booksβ¦ according to him, it helped him organize his thoughts and ponder on whatever was going on up there. heβs such a dork itβs painfully adorable.
the two of you took a quick break to stretch out aching limbs and cramped up knuckles from being put to work for so long. he never mentioned having a partner though giving you the idea that maybe you had a chance? you didnβt know. you didnβt even know how to approach him with it. itβs bad enough that he has people gawking over him in the hallway, girls batting their lashes at him with a high pitched voice. heaven knows that you didnβt want to be grouped in with them.
vivien never gave them the time of day only acknowledging them with a small βthanksβ before going on his way. was it really all in your head though? there were times in class, the hallways, and even in the library where you felt like someone was staring at you. you only felt that way with vivien so it makes sense, right? who knows. thinking too hard about it is enough to give you a headache.
βyouβre deep in thought about something.β your head turned in the direction of that beautiful french accent youβve begun to hear in your dreams, an apologetic smile forming on your face.βiβm sorry. i didnβt mean to tune you out if you were saying something to me.β
βitβs fine as i didnβt say much. tu es mignon.β (youβre adorable)
you didnβt even ask him to clarify what that meant when you saw his lips perk up. your brain was too fried to solve a riddle at moment so you laughed it off. why the hell did you have to like someone so mysterious???
before you knew it it was time to fix any hiccups before turning in your assignment. you were a total ball of anxiety while vivien sat across from you looking calmer than ever. how in the hell can he remain calm at a time like this??? was he not afraid of how you perceived him? did he have that much faith in you orβ
βwould you like to see what i came up with? or do you want to go first?β sigh. might as well go ahead and rip the bandaid off. sooner the better, right? βiβll go first.β he nodded with a silent agreement as you turned over the portrait that youβd been working on diligently.
what he saw, as you drew, was a masterpiece. it was a thoroughly detailed close up of him with his usual calm expression surrounded by gears of various sizes. you saw him, or his mind, as a machine. precise, intelligent, and calculated. thatβs how you saw vivien hugo.
βitβs beautiful. art isnβt for everyone but itβs suitable for you.β
all you could do was muster a quite thanks with a dopey grin on your face although you were completely over the moon. someone asking to have your art in the louvre wouldnβt have moved you as much as his praise.
βhereβs mine. i think itβs very accurate.β there was a portrait of you smiling down at a butterfly that landed on your finger, almost something serene. he highlighted every detail down to your hairstyle, any jewelry you wore, and even your smile lines. you could almost cry honestly. the part that confused you was the brain or the cluster of butterflies fluttering in place of it. as if on cue he answered your question without it being asked.
βtheyβre my favorite. i find them to be beautiful and intelligent creatures. i didnβt see myself doing much aside from playing soccer upon my arrival, butβ¦things changed.β
things changed? you still had no clue as to what he was getting towards with this.
βyouβre a special person. i made this because thatβs how i see you, beautiful and intelligent inside and out.β
oh.
his alarm went off at the worst time possible, signaling that it was time for him to leave before it got too late. once he walked out of the door you sat there speechless with many feelings in your chest. you never cared or bothered to ask anyone how they perceived you, but to have someone say that youβre the most beautiful person to them? that truly meant something. that night you could hardly sleep without replaying that very moment.
professor noa was highly impressed by the artwork and concept you two came up with. vivien quietly acknowledged you with a smile before excusing himself. how odd.
oh well. it was a friday night and you were proud of yourself as your hard work had paid off so why not binge that popular series youβd been meaning to watch? that was until you were startled by a knock at the door. you did a quick recap of the day not recalling anything about inviting someone over, but you opened it anyway.
βi didnβt want last night to be the last time we spent some time together. do you mind if i come in? i got us some eclairs to celebrate.β that night you and vivien sat on the couch for three hours cracking each up with the TV serving as background noise.
itβs already been a month since and you and vivien were still joined at the hip. chigiri and isagi never failed to irritate your eardrums with their famous β[name] and hugo sitting in a treeβ banter. it was so ridiculous that you couldnβt help but laugh at their antics while secretly enjoying the acknowledgement. you and vivien werenβt in a rush to date each. you two were just that close. the laughter was cut short once you felt a small buzz in your back pocket, opening your phone to some new messages from vivien.
you hearted his message, but what were you supposed to do with six hours of wait time?! what did he even want to give you? did he have anything to say to go along with it? the messages were so ominous that you had no clue what to expect. you could only hope and pray that time moved faster than the speed of light itself.
by the time 6:40 rolled around you were already hopping off of the train, damn near jogging on your way to the park. if your nerves werenβt fried earlier theyβre definitely worse now.
βhe better have something good in return for making me wait all day or so help him god.β you thought, taking a seat on the bench while awaiting his arrival, checking the screen that read 6:50.
β[name]?β βvivien! what was so important that you couldnβt tell me through text or at least in the hallw-β he held out a bouquet of flowers with a small bag of your favorites from the cafe. he didnβt waste any time getting to the point.
βiβve come to realize that meeting you was part of my destiny. i find myself waiting for your name to appear on my screen or to hear your voice and be in your presence. itβs still a foreign feeling, but i know that i want you in my life. will you be my partner? please?β
immediately, you threw yourself into his arms with a lovesick smile plastered on your lips. how could you ever say no to him?
βiβm all yours, vivi.β
the next morning you found yourself walking with a little more pep in your step as your heart was still full from last night. you almost tripped over your own two feet when chigiri wrapped his arm around you with a smug expression. oh god.
βlook at you coming up in the world.β
βthe hell is that supposed to mean???β
βi heard about you and hugo.β that quick? you didnβt even tell anyone! βhow did you evenββ
βword spreads fast in the lower east.β
sigh.
ty for reading this extremely lengthy fic! all art creds go to lalamelonflora !
