The EU started with 6 founding nations in 1958 and grew to 27 through six enlargement rounds. Poland's GDP per capita is now 40% higher than it would have been without membership. Lithuania grew from 26% to 68% of the EU average in just 20 years.
In 1957, six countries signed a treaty in Rome with the modest goal of creating a common market. Belgium, France, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. A reasonable enough starting point.
Sixty years later: 27 members, six enlargement rounds, and one of the more ambitious international cooperation projects ever attempted.
