People know that the whole "don't portray [harmful action] because viewers might recreate it" thing is a rule for children's shows right? It's supposed to be shit like "don't show peppa pig playing with fire so we don't get sued if a kid watches it and burns their house down." Not like, fanfiction for adults.
prev i hope u dont mind me sharing ur tags bc yeah this is an interesting add on
i was parked at the beach yesterday and a Real Biker Dude pulled up beside me. Like on a big handlebar motorcycle with his whole life packed onto it. a real rambling man. a son of the highways and byways. and he looked down at my mini-series purple e-bike and he was like "what a sweet little thing! how's it ride?" and we talked my e-bike specs. i said i liked his motorcycle and he was barely interested in talking about it except to tell me where he got it in case i ever want one. but he loved my little bike.
this is a problem for me because now i feel respected and powerful so from now on i'm gonna roll up with my e-bike to other guys on their motorcycle and be like "sick bike. reminds me of mine if it were less space efficient..."
i'm gonna go to leather bars and start calling myself a biker instead of a cyclist.
just watched jurassic park and from a meta perspective im thinking sadly about how the behavior the carnivores display is way more indicative (at least to me) of wanting to play and lacking stimulation in their lives than actually wanting to eat the human characters. and they got so so demonized for it
JP dinosaur behavior analysis with a healthy dose of headcanon included from someone who doesnt know much about behavioral science. for funsies
ok so first of all lets start with the t rex. her very first moment is the goat leg ending up on the car, but we can see in the next shot that she is very capable of swallowing the goat whole. so how did that leg get there? given evidence that t. rexes were likely social creatures, i like to imagine that the leg on the car was more âhere you go have part of my meal because youâre smallâ for the humans
next is her communication. i want to look at one specific thing, which was actually the thing that prompted the post
to me, that certainly looks like eye pinning. eye pinning is a behavior in birds that signals high stimulation. hereâs what it looks like in a bird
it can be positive or negative, but in this case itâs probably not negative, because thereâs nothing forcing the rex to stay there. if she wanted to leave the situation she could hit the bricks
the continual roaring also sort of suggests play behavior to me. thereâs not really any sense in making a shitload of noise at your prey (unless youâre trying to scare them out of cover, but we know she doesnât need to do that because we see sheâs strong enough to just break into the car) so, especially because they keep screaming, that reads way more like âim making noises and theyâre making noises back ^w^â then it does as trying to intimidate prey for some reason
play behavior also makes sense because we know, canonically, sheâs crazy understimulated. alan grant says as much when he mentions that they arenât feeding her in a way that promotes hunting behavior. the way she noses at the jeep and spins it really just looks more like curious interaction than anything, as well as all the chasing people she does
next, the raptors. their really famous scene is the kitchen, but first letâs establish some facts about them. we know from muldoon and what weâre shown that:
- theyâre smart enough to use one of their own as a distraction for flanking maneuvers
- theyâre good at problem solving enough to wait until the electric fences are turned off to systematically test them for vulnerabilities
- theyâre absurdly fast. â60 mph on open groundâ fast
- they are absolutely not in a big enough enclosure
- theyâre not fed in a way that promotes hunting behavior either
so when you put all this information together and then look at the kitchen scene, i donât believe for even one second that the âhide behind the counterâ routine is fooling those two raptors for any time at all. that entire sequence of loudly scrambling around the kitchen while something that can keep pace with a cheetah pretends it canât catch you? yeah that makes WAY more sense as play behavior than it does hunting, especially since we see numerous times that there are many things on the island easier to catch and eat than a bunch of skinny humans (this goes for the rex, too!)
the bit with the noises is also true here. more true, if anything. muldoon tells us the raptors are ambush predators, so why on earth would they get into a hunting ground and then risk scaring their prey off with the loud barking calls? âhi weâre here come out and playâ is a much more sensible use of a call loud enough to hurt a humanâs ears from across a room in that situation
in conclusion: damnit john your girls are bored as fuck. give them a horse ball or a frozen pumpkin stuffed with meat or something

In France if you suffer from hair loss as a teenage girl and cannot afford a real hair wig the school will try and force you to go to class bald. The school will make you buy a chemotherapy turban, you will buy two different so that the school can choose which one they prefer and you will prove that they are chemotherapy turban and not hijab but once you wear it they will change their mind and say it looks too much like a hijab and insist on you going bald or buying a real hair wig that you cannot afford.
If your doctor makes multiple documents confirming that you suffer from alopecia because of stress and the medicine you have to take for your epilepsy and that wearing a bonnet or something is recommended for your mental health as youâre not ready to go out bald in high school as a teenage girl, instead of admitting they are wrong the school will accuse the doctor of lying and report him to the Ordre des MĂŠdecins (equivalent of the General Medical council). Your doctor will find himself asking you for a document stating that you are not Muslim in order to defend himself and prove that no he wasnât colluding with you so you could wear a substitute for hijab.

In France if you are a North African nurse at a public hospital and wear a fabric surgical cap they will try to make you remove it because apparently itâs a hidden hijab. They will accuse you of going against secularism and when youâll argue that they are discriminating you by assuming youâre Muslim for a surgical cap on your head they will change their angle and claim that you should wear nothing on your hair because you wear the same surgical cap in multiple bedroom which is unhygienic apparently (which is a bullshit argument cause you wear the same scrub/uniform in different bedrooms as well). They will go as far as claiming that disposable scrub caps (you know the thin papery ones?) are not okay to wear in a hospital even if you change it regularly. And then they will fire you for a lack of hygiene because you wear a surgical cap.

All of that will be done in the name of secularism and womenâs right despite having nothing do with either quite the opposite.
The teenage girlâs story is also not just about racism and Islamophobia itâs also about ableism as the girl is convinced that the real reason the school is trying to push her out is because she had an epilepsy crisis in class and nobody knew what to do and the school nurse was absent. It could have ended badly had her best friend not known what to do to help. Apparently it was bad enough to cancel class for the rest of the day and the teacher was shocked to the point of ending on sick leave.
oh and don't forget that many parts of France mandate by law how much skin women must show in swimsuits, which they claim is about not getting street dirt in public pools but which is disproportionately enforced on Muslim or even just Middle Eastern/North African women
(and of course is also some forced nudity misogynistic bullshit in general, to boot)

Crested Caracara being allopreened by two Black Vultures! This is such an interesting behavior and one that's typically one-way (preening by vultures to caracara). Here you can see the caracara either attempting to reciprocate but getting rebuffed by both vultures, or telling them to stop for now.

[louder than everyone] MAN I THINK IT DEPENDS!
A simple error got magnified by Flock's nationwide surveillance camera network and ended with four cop cars boxing me in.
Oh hey! Look! It's that thing everyone on the left said was going to happen happening!
âThe plates on this car are stolen,â Officer Ganshyn said. My face mustâve twisted in disbelief because he continued, saying they werenât sure whether the car itself or just the plates were stolen. This made absolutely no sense. Car companies keep meticulous track of the fleets they loan out to the media. The vehicles all have special manufacturer or dealer plates that are logged every time one enters or exits. The officers eventually ran the Range Roverâs VIN, and it came back clean, but in their view, the plates were definitely stolen.
Before I could even process that, another officer dropped the big surprise: theyâd actually been tracking me around town for days via Flock cameras. But they kept losing the trail, so when a camera alerted them that the Range Rover had been spotted turning into Kohlâs that morning, they quickly set up their ambush and waited for me and my wife to walk out of the store and get into the SUV.
[âŚ]
One of the officers pulled out his phone, opened the Flock app, and showed me two photos: a wide shot of the Range Rover going through the intersection and a zoomed-in shot of the New Jersey license plate, which clearly reads 34 10 DTM and says VEHICLE MFR along the bottom. Critically, the number 10 is in a much smaller font than the rest of the tag, which is the non-standard structure New Jersey uses for manufacturer plates.
[âŚ]
The New Jersey plates that were allegedly stolen from the LA dealer were 34 03 DTM, not 34 10 DTM. But when the police report was created and the plate was entered into Flockâs system, it was just recorded as 34 DTM. Just the five large characters, no little number in the middle. And Flockâs AI tech wasnât registering that non-standard little number when it began picking up the Range Rover around town. It just saw 34 DTM in large type and started alerting the local police.
As we all stood there shaking our heads, including my wife, who was finally allowed to join me, I connected the final dot. A lot of vehicles in JLRâs media fleet have a New Jersey manufacturer plate with the same alphanumeric structureâ34 ## DTMâand Officer Ganshyn observed that meant it was now a nationwide issue. Anywhere a police department has a partnership with Flock, any other JLR-owned car with the same plate structure is going to get flagged as stolen. In fact, four other 34 ## DTM cars were being tracked around Minnesota that week, according to Officer Ganshyn. I was just the first one to get nabbed. The only way to stop it would be for the LAPD to correct their initial report and update Flockâs system, which Jaguar Land Rover was now racing to make happen following the phone call.
Still, he warned me to drive straight home, park the Range Rover, and leave it there. If I were to cross into the neighboring town, Iâd probably get flagged again and go through this entire ordeal again with a different set of officers. His parting words were ominous: âYouâre lucky weâre in Plymouth. If you were in Minneapolis, they definitely wouldâve come at you with guns drawn.â

"lock in" is probably one of the most important phrases to enter the public lexicon in the 2020s
sometimes i have strong opinions but they're also so inane that halfway through writing a post i'll be like "yeah, this is Absolutely not worth the energy it's taking" and delete everything. but then the opinion is still in my head. and i still want to share it. so within five minutes i go "you know, i bet i can phrase it more succinctly this time" and anyway. you all see where this is going. sometimes i do this four times in a row before i give up on the specific inane opinion and instead write a vague post about the concept of opinions as if that'll satisfy the urge to post the entirety of my inner monologue online. may or may not be relevant to what you're reading right now. and now all our lives have been enriched. you're welcome

episodes that i think every tv show should have:
timeloop
whodunit
musical
beach trip
random genre change (especially if it's to a noir detective thing)
one where they get randomly meta and fourth wall breaky but then never acknowledge it again
one where something happened but we as the audience don't actually get to see how it happened and only see it through the unreliable narrated flashbacks as recollected by the characters
Why are there just blobs of fake rubber meat that a bunch of unrelated microbes can build in the dirt but they've only ever been found in china and can't be classified any further than "biological objects"
