Diary of a Fashion Design Student ●Frame By Frame●

The movement was an alliance of art and craftsmanship aimed at an affluent clientele.   The early 20th-century impulse to create “modern” design – objects and environments suited to a fast-paced industrialised world – led to the development of countless expressions, all of which fall under the rubric of Art Deco.

Schlemmer worked as a freelance painter in Berlin.  In 1920, he produced his first figurines for the Triadic Ballet, which was first performed in Stuttgart in 1922. Gropius appointed Schlemmer as one of the first masters at the Bauhaus. 

Weimar 1919 –1925

Bauhaus was found by Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1919, his goal  was "to create a new guild of craftsmen, without the class distinctions which raise an arrogant barrier between craftsman and artist.". The school was shaped by the pedagogical and aesthetic ideas of Johannes Itten and various past & contemporary movements. Gropius wanted to reunite art and craft to arrive at high-end functional products with artistic merit.

Dessau 1925 –1932

Dessau years saw a remarkable change in direction for the school. Meyer became director and  favored measurements and calculations. Berlin 1932 –1933

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was appointed in 1930.  

Deutsche Werkbund was a reaction against Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) in 1907 until about 1914 . The Werkbund was loosely modelled on the British Arts and Crafts movement set up by William Morris. It was an association of scientists, artists, industrials and craftsmen with a similar frame of mind. They aimed to create a modernized aesthetic of everyday life. 

The founding members were 12 artists, among them Peter Behrens, Theodor Fischer, Josef Olbrich, Bruno Paul and Richard Riemerschmid. 

Weiner Werkstaette, ‘Vienna’s Workshop, was founded in 1903 by Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann and aimed to bring together architects, artists and designers.

The idea was to focus on many types of design design, such as-  ceramics, fashion, silver, furniture and graphic arts.  Wiener Werkstätte encouraged artists to look beyond the value of material and embrace geometric symmetry over surface ornament. 

There was an interest in Primitivism.

VIENNA SECESSION

This Period stretched from  1897 to the early 1900s. The period presented a movement against exclusivity, commerciality, a bourgeoisie attitude, national  and depicting history. 

The Vienna Secession was strongly influenced by the exotic and foreign countries. The Japanese was a great influences, Japanesse design was incorporated due to its restrained use of decoration. These artists preferred hand-made work to machine made objects. The use of natural material was popular. The aim was to depict ‘ art as life’, design was to seamlessly form part of everyday life.
