Apple and OpenAI Are Having a Big Fight
Have you ever built something cool out of blocks and then someone else tried to copy your new design? That is exactly what Apple says is happening right now. On July 10 2026 Apple took OpenAI to a big court in California. They filed a massive new legal best complaint against them.
Apple is the best company that makes the iPhone. OpenAI is the new company that makes new ChatGPT tool. Apple says OpenAI is stealing their top-secret plans to build their own electronic gadgets. They are not just blaming the company. They are also blaming two former Apple workers named Tang Yew Tan and Chang Liu.
What Apple Claims Happened Apple wrote a huge, 41-page paper explaining the problem. They claim that OpenAI’s new gadget business is built on stolen secrets.
Apple says OpenAI hired more than 400 people who used to work at Apple. Hiring people is totally fine. But Apple says OpenAI did something wrong. They claim OpenAI told these workers to bring secret plans and parts with them.
Here is what Apple says OpenAI did:
The Interview Trick: Apple claims OpenAI asked job candidates to bring secret Apple blueprints and device parts to their job interviews.
Asking the Suppliers: Apple says OpenAI went to the factories that make Apple parts. They asked secret questions about phone batteries and circuit boards.
The Metal Secret: Apple claims OpenAI tricked a metal factory. They told the factory they had permission to use a special, secret Apple metal coating, but they did not.
The Main People in Trouble Apple named two specific workers who left Apple to go to OpenAI.
Tang Yew Tan He worked at Apple for 24 years. He helped design the iPhone and the Apple Watch. He left Apple and became the boss of hardware at OpenAI. Apple says he used his inside knowledge to ask new job candidates for secret Apple details.
Chang Liu He was an electrical engineer at Apple for eight years. He left to join OpenAI in January 2026. Apple says he did not give his work laptop back. They claim he used a computer glitch to log into Apple's secret folders and downloaded over a thousand pages of secret files about circuit boards.
What Was Taken?
Apple says the missing information cost billions of dollars to make. It includes:
Secret blueprints for advanced computer circuit boards.
Engineering slide shows and project papers.
Designs for secret, unreleased electronic gadgets.
Lists of the special factories Apple uses to buy parts.
Why Are They Fighting Now?
Back in 2024 Apple and OpenAI were friends. They made a deal to put new ChatGPT inside iPhones to help Siri App.
But then things went wrong. Apple got tired of waiting for OpenAI to finish their work. So, in early 2026, Apple stopped working with OpenAI. Instead, Apple made a new deal with Google to use their AI, called Gemini.
Now, OpenAI wants to make its own physical devices, like a new kind of phone. If OpenAI makes a cool new device, people might stop buying iPhones. Apple wants to protect its business.
What Happens Next? Apple wants the court to stop OpenAI immediately.
Stop Using the Secrets: Apple wants a judge to tell OpenAI they cannot use any Apple designs.
Give Things Back: They want all their files new laptops, and parts returned right away.
Pay Money: Apple wants OpenAI to pay them a lot of money for the trouble.
A Big Trial: Apple wants a regular jury of everyday citizens to listen to the case and decide who is right.
Apple said they work very hard on their inventions and will always protect them. OpenAI said they do not care about other new companies secrets and just want to build cool new technology. Now a judge will have to decide who is telling the truth.
