malik  let  out  a  soft  chuckle,  shaking  his  head  as  he  leaned  back  against  his  seat.  “you've  been  paying  attention?  man,  you're  lucky  i  know  you,  because  that  was  the  least  convincing  thing  you've  said  all  day.”  he  nodded  toward  the  tv.  “you've  been  staring  at  that  screen  like  it's  written  in  another  language.”  his  attention  shifted  to  the  match  just  long  enough  to  catch  the  team  names  before  teddy's  bet  registered.  "oh,  so  i'm  the  one  taking  all  the  risk  here?"  he  scoffed.  “you  pick  a  team  you've  spent  five  whole  seconds  learning  about,  and  if  they  lose,  i'm  the  one  embarrassing  myself?”  a  grin  spread  across  his  face  as  he  reached  over  to  steal  one  of  teddy's  fries  before  they  could  stop  him.  "nah…  if  i'm  getting  dragged  into  karaoke  at  frank's,  you're  getting  on  stage  with  me."  he  pointed  the  fry  back  at  them  for  emphasis.  “duet.  no  backing  out  halfway  through,  either.”  he  popped  the  fry  into  his  mouth,  still  smiling.  "and  for  the  record,  if  australia  loses,  i'm  blaming  you.  you  looked  at  the  scoreboard  for  two  seconds  and  probably   cursed  them."

malik  let  out  a  quiet  laugh,  rubbing  a  hand  over  his  face  as  he  watched  bonnie  work  herself  up  over  the  whole  thing.  "you've  already  turned  this  guy  into  the  bad  guy  over  a  collectible  toy,"  he  muttered,  a  grin  tugging  at  the  corner  of  his  mouth.  his  eyes  followed  the  sharply  dressed  stranger  for  a  second  before  flicking  back  to  her.  "for  all  we  know,  he's  buying  it  for  his  kid.  or  his  niece.  or did you ever think that maybe  he  just  likes  cute  stuff?"  he  shrugged.  “rich  people  are  allowed  to  have  hobbies  too.”  a  moment  passed  before  he  looked  the  man  over  again.  "…that  suit  is  ridiculously  expensive,  though." he  thought  it  over  for  a  second  before  speaking  again.  "how  about  this—we  go  ask  if  he'd  be  willing  to  sell  it.  if  not,  maybe  the  vendor's  got  another  one  in  the  back."  he  looked  at  bonnie  with  a  raised  brow.  “nice  and  simple.  no  guilt  trips.  no  psychological  warfare.”  he  pointed  a  finger  at  her,  trying  not  to  laugh.  "and  if  the  words  'reseller  scum'  leave  your  mouth,  i'm  acting  like  I  don't  know  you."

she  watched  the  whole  thing  unfold  with  the  kind  of  expression  people  usually  reserved  for  mildly  disappointing  weather.  she  didn't  laugh.  which,  honestly,  was  probably  worse.  her  eyes  drifted  from  the  overturned  canoe,  to  pearl  bobbing  in  the  water  like  apples.  "...huh."  she  crouched  at  the  edge  of  the  dock,  elbows  rested  on  her  knees.  "i  was  gonna  ask  if  that  was  intentional,  but  i  feel  like  the  answer's  emotionally  complicated."  pearl's  order  hung  in  the  air  for  a  few  seconds  before  she  opened  her  mouth  to  speak.  "right.  help  or  leave."  lexley  nodded  once,  as  if  carefully  weighing  both  options.  "i  did  briefly  consider  leaving.  you  made  it  sound  so  convincing."  without  rushing,  she  slid  onto  her  stomach  and  extended  a  paddle  toward  pearl  instead  of  her  hand.  "i'm  not  grabbing  your  wrist.  if  you  panic,  you'll  drag  me  in  too,  and  then  we're  just  two  women  having  the  dumbest  memorial  service  this  lake's  ever  seen."  her  mouth  twitched  into  something  that  almost  qualified  as  a  smile.  "take  the  stupid  paddle."  her  blue  eyes  stare  directly  at  pearl.  "and  for  the  record..."  her  gaze  flicked  toward  the  canoe.  "you  got  a  solid  two  feet  of  air  before  you  ate  it.  it  was  kind  of  impressive.  deeply  humiliating  for  you...  but  impressive."

he  let  out  a  low  chuckle,  leaning  back  against  the  bar  stool  as  he  glanced  up  at  the  big  scree  for  all  of  two  seconds  before  looking  back  at  teddy.  "man,  you  haven't  watched  a  single  play  since  we  got  here,"  he  teased,  a  crooking  grin  tugging  at  the  corner  of  his  mouth.  "you're  just  following  the  crowd.  that's  dangerous  behaviour."  he  took  a  slow  sip  of  his  own  heineken.  "i  don't  really  got  a  team  in  this  either.  i  just  came  for  the  beer  and  the  bar  peanuts."  he  says,  grabbing  a  handful  and  tossing  them  into  his  mouth.  "a  bet,  huh?"  malik  says  between  a  few  bites.  "depends.  you  talkin'  money,  or  one  of  those  embarrassing  favours  that  somehow  ends  up  with  somebody  regretting  it?"  a  smirk  settled  on  his  face.  "because  if  it's  the  second  one...  i'm  listening."

malik  blinked  once,  then  look  from  his  friend  to  the  man  in  the  said  boat  shoes  with  the  same  slow  disbelief.  "....boat  shoes  is  already  a  choice,"  he  mutters.  "stealing  the  last  blind  box  all  while  wearing  them?  that's  fucking  villain  behaviour."  his  mouth  twitched  upwards  into  a  grin  a  bonnie  aggressively  tied  her  hair  back.  “nah,  don't  go  catching  an  assault  charge  over  a  pinkie  pie,  miss  general  manager.”  when  she  shoved  her  purse  towards  him,  he  took  it  without  thinking,  slinging  the  strap  over  his  shoulder  before  sighing  dramatically.  “i  got  a  better  idea.”  malik  started  walking,  nodding  for  her  to  follow.  “we  use  words  first.  worst  case,  i  offer  to  buy  it  off  him.  if  he's  just  grabbing  it  because  it  looked  cool,  maybe  he'll  let  it  go.”  he  shrugs.  “if  he's  one  of  those  resellers  though…”  a  moment  of  silence.  “…  then  i'll  stand  behind  you  while  you  make  him  feel  weird.  moral  support  only  though.”

malik  lets  out  a  laugh  the  second  she  shoves  the  spiral  potato  into  his  face,  one  tattooed  hand  wrapping  loosely  around  her  wrist  before  she  can  poke  him  in the eye with it.  “you've  said  that,  like...  four  snacks  ago.”  his  grin  is  all  teeth. he  leans  down  anyway,  taking  a  bite  straight  from  the  potato  she's  holding  without  bothering  to  take  it  from  her.  "...okay."  he  chews  for  a  second,  nodding.  “damn.  i  hate  when  you're  right.  that's  pretty  fuckin'  fire.”  his  gaze  flicks  over  to  her,  catching  that  stupidly  excited  smile  she'd  been  wearing  all  afternoon,  and  he  can't  help  smiling  back.  “next  booth,  i'm  the  one  picking.  and  if  you  make  me  eat  anything  that  looks  like  it's  got  powdered  sugar  and  hot  sauce  on  it,  i'm  leaving  you  here.”  a  moment  passes  before  he  snorts.  "...nah,  that's  a  lie.  i'd  last  maybe  thirty  seconds  before  i  came  back  looking  for  you."

malik  laughed  out  loud  at  her  words.  "oh  yeah?  and  what  exactly  leads  you  to  believe  that  i  would  win  a  wet  t-shirt  contest?"  he  asks,  one  brow  raised.  "you  got  some  secret  judging  criteria  that  i  don't  know  about?"  his  grin  tugged  wider  as  he  glanced  towards  the  crowd  that  was  gathering  around  the  makeshift  stage.  "nah,  see,  you're  looking  at  this  all  wrong.  half  the  fun  is  having  absolutely  no  business  entering,  but  doing  it  anyways.  that'll  be  what  make  you  a  legend."  he  points  his  finger  at  her.  "oh,  and  for  the  record..  if  your  biggest  concerns  today  are  a  fuck-ass  bartender  with  a  twin  sized  bed  and  a  wet  t-shirt  contest,  i'd  say  you're  having  a  pretty  successful  summer."  malik  took  another  sip  from  his  water  bottle before he flashes a toothy smile.

he  leaned  back  in  his  chair,  sun  glasses  shading  his  eyes  as  he  let  the  warmth  of  the  sun  settle  across  his  skin  as  he  glanced  over  at  mackenzie.  a  small  chuckle  escaped  hims  lips  before  he  shook  his  head.  "nah,  you're  right..  this  was  definitely  a  solid  idea."  he  adjusts  his  sunglasses  before  stretching  his  arms  above  his  head. "i've  been  good,  though.  just  busy  with  work  and  life  stuff..  you  know  how  it  goes.  it  feels  like  every  time  i  get  a  free  minute  to  myself,  something  else  pops  up."  he  shrugged  his  shoulders.  "but  i  can't  complain  too  much,  though.  what  about  you?  you  been  good  i  take  it, yeah?"
