Insularity: The South never experienced large-scale white immigration aside from the Protestant north of Europe with the sole exception being New Orleans. This led to a sense of us versus them. The Civil War in the 19th century solidified and hardened this attitude,

Religion: The South was a farming society with few large towns. Unlike New England, there was no established religion for the common folk. The rich plantation owners were Episcopalian but out in the country, preachers were just ordinary men, near-illiterate, without the benefit of seminary training. They tended then as now to take a passage of scripture out of context and interpret it however they chose. Sometimes they would interpret the same favorite passage in many different ways to suit their mood. Black churches followed suit and many charismatic black preachers arose.
