as stated in the title, hundred line does have a gift system where you can create items with your foraged materials and give them to a character of your choice in exchange for a predetermined amount of affection points based on the character and item in question. to be honest this system kind of warrants a meta post of its own but just for initial context, eito’s “best” gifts in the game include novels, an e-reader, a bookmark, earplugs, etc.

however, also of note (shown below) are his reactions to being gifted other kinds of books (graphic novels and shounen manga).

he HATES the graphic novel set and it actually gives you the least amount of affection points when given to eito, which could be explained by eito being a huge book nerd and elitist who thinks graphic novels are “lesser literature”… except he has the near-exact opposite reaction to being gifted a special volume of “only the best chapters of serial shounen manga” (it’s a “liked” gift and grants the second-highest amount of affection points, bested only by eito’s favorite gifts listed above). eito is into shounen manga, and frankly, it makes him even more interesting than he already was… because it implies a lot of insane things about his behavior and mannerisms.

initially (at the very beginning of the game, when eito is serving as the SDU’s second-in-command/takumi’s right hand and keeping the entire truth about himself, his history and his true motivations under wraps), eito presents himself as a shy, pragmatic and slightly awkward person whose primary motivation is to safely lead everyone through to the end of their mandatory service, making sure no one gets physically hurt or mentally scarred. he seems to fill a sort of senpai role for some of his younger or less experienced peers. however, he has a pretty “bad” tendency to speak in a way that makes other people cringe — not because there’s anything wrong with the things eito says, but because he is always teetering the line between motivational and corny. like everyone groans when he speaks because he’s prone to cheesy motivational power-of-friendship speeches. his official quote and bio (below) corroborate this.

this is the eito that everyone gets to know during the first 100 days: a sincere, skeptical, analytical, strong and intelligent person who has serious health issues (an unspecified “heart disorder” that he is pretending to have) and a weird but ultimately harmless and negligible quirk for speaking like a character in a power of friendship manga. this is consistent in pretty much every route and ending where eito is shown as “good”, barring “redemption” routes like rebellion where he’s already outed himself as The Guy Who Will Kill All The Scary Humans and has only really become tamed into a cynical, hardy and macabre guy who is sort of our friend now but used to be our enemy. examples again shown below

like, this is absolutely just his idea of what other people would find “acceptable” (at least in comparison to his “natural state”, which is comparably much more unpalatable and abrasive to deal with) and so he uses it as a mask to get by in his public-facing life. my ultimate point here really is that he absolutely got this from reading manga and emulating the “good guys”; even if this side of him is fake, he does see himself as the good guy in the context of his conflict with human beings.

As for what comes next... would you do the honors?

silence is his oldest companion. in fact, eito can’t recall a time when he didn’t find comfort in solitude; even in his earliest days, he'd much rather have curled up alone with a book than run off to play with the other children. of course, the motivation had never been anything so simple as childhood bashfulness — as far as eito knew, the world outside his room was an unimaginable hell. the monsters who lived there spoke with voices that scraped, warbled, wailed and rang like nothing he had ever heard before... leaving him with no choice but to hide away from it all.

as he grew older, eito doubly grew wiser to the true nature of his affliction. he learned to 'fit in'. by that point, others had begun to expect him to surround himself with more than merely silence... and he'd found material comfort in music. instrumentals, of course, but not just those: in fact, he often found that if he listened closely enough to a piece and imagined the vocalist was something other than human, he'd feel all the more relieved by its presence.

obviously, ryoji knows none of this. if anything, he's just being courteous... but all of this is to say eito does enjoy it. well, he's certainly heard far worse.

(hundred line) route 0: eito is a successful third-year high school student moonlighting as a serial killer. when he wakes up one day in a place he doesn’t recognize, he finds out he’s been drafted into an interplanetary war he didn’t even know was happening… which completely upends all the great plans he had to kill people back home. as the de facto second-in-command of his unit, eito puts on a peace-loving boy-next-door façade with the intent of manipulating everyone into just getting killed and ending the war so he can go back home.

“normal au”: the above minus the war; eito (17–32, depending on where in the “canon timeline” i feel like putting him…) lives in the chiyoda ward of tokyo, japan and has the same extremely ambitious, optimistic ideas involving becoming a politician and wiping everyone out(??????). this is effectively my default verse or at the very least the one i tend to add things onto when it comes to crossovers.

(hundred line) rebellion/006: 15 years after route 0, the war has finally ended and peace has arrived to every involved faction. after choosing to stay on futurum, eito is now (in an official capacity) a scheming eunuch royal advisor. with long hair. cute

^theres no hundred line rpc so i’m not detailing any more of my verses for it here in order to keep this brief since it’s not relevant to my current writing partners but assume i have one for every route because i do. these will just be more on a request/if-you-know-you-know basis

persona: he’s a persona-user wielding azrael and is represented as a social link/confidant of the adjustment arcana (a non-rider waite tarot card and the thoth deck version of justice, similar to hunger/lust/aeon/faith) i’ve toyed with the idea of making him an artificial persona user but idkkkk. we’ll hammer this out together #ok

honkai star rail: a galaxy ranger on the path of the hunt. despite his seemingly-constant proselytising about peace, justice and heroism, eito follows his own path along the hunt (as most galaxy rangers tend to do)… which comes with some unique ideas about what things like “peace” and “justice” actually mean.

the premise alone is absurd. it's impossible. it's a fairy tale.

for about as long as he can remember, eito has had his feet planted more firmly in the ground than anyone he's ever known. he found early success in logic, the natural sciences, arithmetic and discipline. he knew left from right, up from down, who to stay away from and what train to take to get back home. these things came naturally to him, maybe not because he was "chosen" or because he was a child but because he was eito. the mature one. the high achiever and the skeptic.

but, of course, everyone dabbles in fiction. to say he's never enjoyed a good story would be a bold-faced lie; him, seventeen, having already traversed most of the western and japanese literary canon? perhaps that’s what draws him to believe — that, and the fact that the woman in front of him seems to have crawled straight out of one of those tales.

...well. maybe it won't hurt to see where this all leads.
