Timeline of a man who had already written himself off as a casualty, to a happily married scientist who is actually making a positive impact on the world and can look at himself in the mirror every day and not despise the man he sees there. Yes he still has amber flecks in his lovely grey eyes, and YES he still has slightly sharper teeth than a human should.

Mutation AU, so there's some leftover residual Amber fuckery.

Probably taken shortly before Leon started exhibiting worrying symptoms of [redacted go play RE9 it's good i promise] so he's not back in frantic "surely if I push myself hard enough I can fix everything" mode just yet.

It's still a bit balanced out by Leon "Surely if I perform the role they want from me HARD enough I'll be accepted and worthy of love and happiness" Kennedy. They usually scare EACH OTHER enough with their bullshit to keep each other from getting too self-destructive.

Luis never doubted what Leon had done. He knew as soon as he woke. He didn't need to see the hastily scrawled note, the rifle and ammo, the discarded injector or the empty vial.

He knew as soon as felt his heart pulse. Oh, Sancho. What have you done?

Luis also knew, without hesitation, that he had already forgiven Leon.

[Mutation AU]

Luis Serra lives. Infected with the Amber, his plaga powers his wings by brute force. Tentacles can violently emerge and be used for locomotion, while even more fuse themselves to his wings to lend them strength.

When the plaga is killed, Luis retains the wings but can barely move them, much less fly. When forced to choose between dealing with their cumbersome dead weight and continue to stay in isolated quarantine, or have the wings clipped... he chooses the latter.

Leon has some complicated feelings about it, but he knows he has no right to try to tell Luis what to do with his body.

Something something cutting off pieces of ourselves until we fit into the hole we've been assigned. If he wants to go interface with society again, if he wants to be given an assignment instead of a quarantine cell, he has to choose the clipped wings... (they were useless, cumbersome, he has a hundred different reasons. But it still hurts.)

Did you know a lot of beetles have wings that fold in order to fit under the elytra? And for some beetles with VERY long wings and VERY small elytra, they use their own abdomens to shove them back into place like a tail or something???

“How are you feeling?” Luis asks in a low voice when they’re alone. “Ready to be America’s hero again?”

"Like a million bucks," Leon mutters. "You're joking, right?"

His tail lashes, longer and spikier than it was five minutes ago, reacting to his tension and agitation.

Leon would be lucky if they didn't shoot him on sight based on an assumption that he was compromised. Maybe he'd live long enough to be dissected in a lab later...

"Look at me," he hisses. "I'm a monster."

His body is unstable, the mutations rippling to the surface without warning, never completely reverting. It seems to be an unconscious response to his emotions, a defense mechanism he can't control. Sure, Luis still has wings and teeth a bit sharper than one might consider normal. And Luis's claws seemed more like hard, sharp nails- perfectly able to trim down, unlike his own. Ashley could pass as a completely normal girl, now.

Leon would be lucky if he got into the evac chopper in anything less than a body-bag, filled with lead.

Luis flinches.

Every signal Leon' body can possibly send is saying don’t touch me don’t touch me I’ll hurt you if you touch me.

“I’m looking,” Luis says. “All I see is you, Leon.”

There is a monster in this room, but it isn't you, Sancho.
