Summary:

Actual inaccuracy, either because it's outdated, or because they simply got it wrong.

Inaccuracy for the sake of TV/Drama

Other medical professionals who don't work in the ER claiming it's wrong while professionals who do work in the ER say yeah, they got that right.

For the first bullet point, I'd tentatively put how they handled the abuse case from season 1. Mandatory reporting (at least, as a mandatory reporter myself) does not require proof from the victim but suspicion of abuse, and additionally the mom's report would also count as reason enough to report the father. Now, while I'd put this in category 1, I also place it just slightly in the second category for drama.

For the second bullet point, I am happily putting on my SLP hat to talk about AAC-and Howard-in the second season. They got the basis of an AAC device right. However, an inexperienced user like Howard would not have been able to create long messages that quick-nor witty ones with other peoples names (unless all the doctors are programed in). But, for the sake of TV, I get it. It would have been a lot of waiting around quietly as Howard input his message.

For this, I'd also add in things like CPR (they are performing it, 99% of the time, on a real actor, not a doll, so they have to be careful) and how they wear their stethoscopes (backwards so they can still hear the crew/directors).

For the last one, it is almost always another specialty in the hospital saying EDs don't do those procedures-and then ER staff from doctors to nurses to medical assistants chiming in listing all the times they've done the procedure because the other specialty wasn't there or didn't come down in time. This also includes the paramedics/EMTs who were made about the portrayal of one team not placing leads properly and claiming doctors don't do it right more often, and then a whole bunch of people-from doctors to nurses to patients-listing all the times someone came in and didn't have their leads placed properly.

Now, for the second one: was I annoyed? No, not really! I recognized the fact that the reality for an inexperienced AAC user and the actual messages they'd be able to produce would be very boring and tedious for a tv show, which I think would honestly send the wrong message about AAC. I don't think anyone who will need a device the way Howard needed one and also watched the show is going to go "but Howard on the Pitt was able to make jokes!".

NO you absolutely WANT your PLASTIC SURGERY procedures to be done by a PLASTIC SURGEON.

As in someone who is specifically trained in it and does it every day.

Someone who is not specifically trained in pleasing cosmetic results and not actively practicing pleasing cosmetic results is how you get horrifying cosmetic results

The "plastic" in "plastic surgeon" did not get here to mean "cheap and fake."

Plastic, the word, predates plastic, the material. The material was named for its noteworthy quality.

"Plastic" means "shapeable." Workable, moldable, malleable, et cetera.

When the first reconstructive surgeries were being pioneered in the 19th century, working absolute miracles like restoring whole faces to girls and women who'd caught fire tending to their kitchen stoves, among a multitude of other devastating conditions, it was this miraculous reshaping that gave the surgery its name: plastic surgery, the shaping surgery.

Time passes, and plastic, the material, is developed, and goes from fantastic modern wonder material to byword for cheap imitation; plastic, the surgery, expands from reconstruction to aesthetic finicking, Barbie is introduced with her unrealistically-proportioned plastic body, and the phrase "plastic surgery" goes from indicating "the reshaping surgery (what a marvelous thing)" to "the fake face/fake tits/fake nose surgery (how vulgar and deceitful)."

Same phrase. Entirely different connotation.

Just sayin'.

Summer sees both a drop off in donations and, at least for our trauma center, a spike in traumas. Trauma centers across the US are in danger of running out of blood for our trauma patients TODAY, which is very scary but, unlike much of the other scary national news coming across our screens these days, is something you can help fix immediately and directly.

If we all tried to go donate blood in the next week (two weeks if that’s what you gotta do) I think that would be really sexy of us.

We’re all nerding out over medical dramas. This should be our thing!

however, you do need to recognize the blatant racism that has taken root in most anti-garsantos sentiments.

garcia is abrasive. at times, she can be mean. in season 2, the whole “nepo baby” situation is a bit aggressive.

but garcia is not aggressive. she, in the grand scheme of things, is not mean. her softest moments are with santos.

the conclusion that garcia is abusive, and the conclusion that she is sexually promiscuous, or a fuckboy, is rooted in racism. in prejudiced ideas that have been used to dehumanize black and brown women for centuries.

many have said this, and it is not my intention to repeat the sentiment simply for the sake of it. i bring this up again so that we might also consider the infantilization of santos that often goes hand in hand with this sort of prejudice against garcia.

with garcia painted as an abuser, santos becomes the abused. a narrative is crafted that frames santos as someone who needs to be saved from garcia, effectively stripping her of all her agency and autonomy. she is made small, relegated to the category or status of helpless victim, denied her full personhood.

that is infantilization.

it is also racism.

infantilization is a core tenet of racism.

when you engage with fan content, particularly of other santos ships, and particularly of barantos—though i appreciate barantos, there are a non-negligible number of works that present at least one of these phenomena—do not do so idly. just because it is not real does not mean that it has no bearing on what is.

garcia is not abusive. santos is not helpless. al-hashimi is not her savior.
