Nebula of @apocryphall asked while we were plotting, so here's a more complete headcanon, as long as its in my brain.
After he was discovered in Area Zero by [AI] Sada, Nico was handed off to the Pokémon League for a formal investigation into who he was and how he got down there. Officially speaking, he was in the league custody for about two to three months while they tried to figure out how the fuck this teenager made it to the Area Zero depths on his own. It probably wouldn't have taken quite so long if Nico had been more cooperative about it, but... I mean. He has plenty of reasons not to trust a bunch of random authority figures with unclear motives.
Once it came to light that he was (probably) a long-lost member of the original Area Zero Expedition Team, however, and not some kind of deep crater horror, the question became, "well, now what?" Suddenly there is a guy who, for all intents and purposes, died 200 years ago. A kid. There were some serious questions regarding what to do, where he would go, how he would adapt to modern life—questions that he didn't get a lot of say in, much to his frustration.
Eventually, it was decided that Nico should attend Naranja Academy as a student. He spent the next several months taking whatever lessons were necessary to get him up to speed to function in a modern school setting so he could enroll at the beginning of the next school year. Less work than you'd probably expect, but most of Nico's time for those few months was still dedicated to those lessons. Clavell assumed responsibility for Nico's well-being as long as he's attending school there, but legally speaking, until he's an adult, Nico is still a ward of the Paldea region.

Nico is, unfortunately, INCREDIBLY familiar with Area Zero. Probably more than, like... anyone else alive? The Expedition spent months down there, before any structures had been constructed, before there was any information about the place. He knows how to navigate it extremely well and even has a pretty solid knowledge of how to deal with most of its pokemon. Nico was not the first death on the expedition, but he was the first to die to a wild pokémon. The Expedition's first encounter with a paradox pokémon, in fact. Nikolas Aurajo, expedition assistant, is listed as a member of the team in the Scarlet/Violet book. He was explicitly stated to be deceased. A photo of the Expedition Team (including him), taken prior to departing, is in there as well.

to no ones surprise nico has comitted the most crimes of my muses, including: theft, evading the police, falsifying his identity, tresspassing, more theft, so much theft, and probably at least one count of assaulting an officer but that one was mostly his rookidee. but they don't count if you never get caught and he was forgiven for the tresspassing.
"Paooo? Gopapa." I was asleep one hundred years ago! "Terapaa. Pagoso..." I thought I was the last one when I fell asleep...
Well, the underdepths were really big. Maybe she just hadn't encountered them! But she'd think she'd notice another Terapagos...
"Teraras?" Laqua? Nope, never heard of it.
"Pi..." Yeah they were pretty large. It made sense if she hadn't meet either of them. Maybe there were even more down there no one had found yet.
"Pika, pi. Chu, pikachu. Pikapikapi, chu." So what's this Nico kid like? How long were you waiting for him? How'd you know he'd even come?

"Teraa paopao! Pagogo terra. Raras, terara." Nico was sleeping too! It was really hard to grant his wish, so it took a long time for him to wake up.
"Alright, food's done. Come here, everyone!" Nico suddenly calls out before Terapagos can elaborate—her attention is immediately drawn to the food!
"Pago! Terapago—papa, ter-ra." Lots! Or at least, there used to be.
She hasn't met any others in a long time, though... Maybe that scary scientist lady and her big machine had something to do with it...?
"Raa. Teraa, pagogo." She turns her head northward, towards the Great Crater. Though its not visible from here, she can still feel it—calling to her. I was asleep for a long time! I was waiting for Nico to wake up!
"Pii..." I see. "Pika, pikapikapi. Chu, kapi. Pika!" Did you know Anemopsis? They were in the crater too until they woke up. And Pagogo! They were around one hundred years ago before going to sleep. "Pika. Piiiika." A big gesture with his arms, hat knocking back.

"Paooo? Gopapa." I was asleep one hundred years ago! "Terapaa. Pagoso..." I thought I was the last one when I fell asleep...

This makes things a lot more interesting though. He'll have to be sure to tell Friede when he gets back to the ship.
