MORE songs I liked recently (and why)
The Ocean - Preboreal This is one of the most haunting, engrossing songs I've ever heard, full of dread, obsessive and obsessing. The extended intro moving like the slow creep of something deep underwater, then the urgent, escalating chant of the lyrics that embed deep in your brain. I could not get it out of my head. It gives me a lot to think about.
The Fashion - Like Knives - A straight up banger. Catchy and fast, but not frenetic in a way that the energy drains out, instead it carries that energetic nature all the way through. The vocalist has the higher pitched and desperate feeling of a lot of emo musicians but there is a rambunctious sort of vibe that matches what I've seen from punk music. In terms of the meaning I think it conveys the idea of kids fooling around with violence in a violent world and communicates the playfulness but also the deadly seriousness.
clipping. - Nothing is Safe - The first time I listened to this song, I was completely obliterated by how good it was. The instrumentation is so bare-bones, but the rapping is so agile and smooth, scans so well and uses internal rhymes, assonance, and percussive consonants so skillfully that it feels insanely layered and fills up every corner of your brain with perfect satisfaction.
The Comet is Coming - Blood of the Past - When I first discovered this band, I didn't like it, but I thought I might like it at a later time. Now it is the later time and I like it a lot. This song in particular, I love it more each time I listen to it. In terms of sound there's a kind of droning underneath that relentlessly drives forward on the smooth sounds of saxophone, intoning a sense of dramatic and escalating warning before the lyrics (lyrics?) even start. At the same time, it feels like we're partying. The lyrical portion is kind of a bridge in the middle of the song and isn't sung, but it is more like a spoken poem than rapping. It doesn't feel like an interruption either, it flows together perfectly.
The Dream Eaters - I am Bleeding Internally - Fun and dance-y song with light hearted absurdity and a glittery sound. beware it will get stuck in your head SO badly
Circuit Preacher - Killed Something - The raw, visceral screaming in this track stands out because of the emotion the vocalist puts into it. Screaming is a technique that is used a lot but few songs have this level of terror and agony. This went immediately onto my Bucky fic playlist
Scum of the Earth - Born Again Masochist - The texture of this sound is so grotesque, crunchy, and filthy! I love it! This song is SUCH a VIBE, so strong and badass, it wallows and gnashes. I love the roughness of the vocalist's voice and how it encourages to embrace the darkness...
clipping. - Enlacing - HOW IS THIS ARTIST SO GOOD??? I love the distortion and delirium of this song. It's a groveling, oozing, warped, poisoned landscape of sounds, conveying a sense of dissociating and separating from your body in a drugged, dreamy haze.
Odd Beholder - Reforesting Fire - This song I first found a while back, and didn't think much of it at the time, but it's stuck with me and grown on me. It's melancholy and reassuring, but there is a sense of movement to it, a droning forward that becomes a spiraling out into more complicated rhythms. It really conveys the idea both in lyrics and in sound of regrowth and life emerging.
