see the crazy thing is that hannibal would have made a great father in the sense that he would have played the role perfectly. he did that with abigail for awhile, played the role of concerned caretaker who only wanted the best for her, to protect her. but really, none of that was for her. that entirely new mask he's never had to don before was all done for will, for his peace of mind, for will's comfort. hannibal has worn his person suit all of his life but he's never had to bring about that specific part of humanness before, but he did it for will. he played a role he had zero experience in just for the opportunity to get closer to will, to forge a bond that no other kind of human connection could ever dare to mimic: parenthood. and he did that for will in the hopes of evolving will into a perfect creation, something like a lover
and for a time, hannibal also played the role of a lover, doting and sweet and knowing. he played that role with alana, a role that can be assumed enough he's never cared to play only bc i imagine there was never a need to. hannibal was probably content with casual things, nothing with a label, but again he played a role and gave himself the label of "sweet boyfriend" all for will. to make will jealous. to further isolate will not only from the woman he felt he loved but also from a friendship he didn't realize he so desperately needed. hannibal became something will could envy and hate and played the role of a lover so well that he had everyone fooled except will
bc will knew that hannibal was no lover, hannibal was no father, hannibal was no person. and i believe hannibal loved will solely bc of that
even in the hopeful s4 speculations of will and hannibal surviving and thriving together in murdery honeymoon like fashion, i do not believe hannibal could ever be a parent or lover- not even for will. which is a good thing, imo, bc will was never looking for a lover. he was looking for a connection, someone who could see him, see past his carefully crafted person suit, just as hannibal dared to dream of will seeing past his
if will did ever want something like that, i believe hannibal would so easily play those roles again. flawlessly. he could make a convincing and almost real romantic partner for will, "adopt" another child with him and play the role of the perfect father-- if and only if it was for will's sake. everything he does is for will and that fact alone is what makes me insane sometimes bc hannibal changes wayyy more than will does. he alters so much of himself to be to will's liking even though in the end will accepted him as he is
but hannibal would do anything for him. not like a lover would or like how a parent would do anything for their child. hannibal would do anything, become anything, for will for the sole reason that will sees him and sees past it all and still chooses to stay, so what would another tweak, another mask, hurt?
