Mr. Destructoid never Judged me before now.
I have long been a friend and fan of Destructoid.com at least until this week. Although the current account that I use on the website is only a few years old I have been a patron to Destructoid for as long as I can remember. If you’re wondering how long that is let’s just say I read about Destructoid on Kotaku.com in 2006. Here we are 10 years later and I just canceled my TinyPass subscription and have removed the site from my favorites list.
If you didn’t already know I’m the founder of VIAHEX.com. Although I’m a gamer for life and a fan of many websites that talk about the gaming industry and the games I love so much I’m done with Destructoid. I have no issue with admitting that Destructoid is one of the reasons that I began my journey into journalism and VIAHEX.com. I’ve always enjoyed what Destructoid has brought to the table when compared to its competitors, so it’s a little sad that Destructoid has officially closed down in my heart.
If you’re a fan of Destructoid.com you probably know of some of the follies and problems that this site has had throughout the years. Dtoid members lost their shit when discussions about “Rape” were banned. For the most part Destructoid has always made me think freedom. I know the site has had to make some changes to create a better community and to serve the needs of its patrons, but something was lost in the last few years.
I’ve started to notice that my comments are disappearing and are being flagged as spam by the Destructoid moderators. In one particular post discussion that I was having with a longtime member of Dtoid, named SirDavies I was attacked, yet my comments were removed by the moderators without reason. SirDavies continued to attack me and tell me what his personal Dtoid Rule were; yet when I told him I don’t care, and that I was free to talk about what I like my comment were removed once again. Just so you know I don’t personally know SirDavies, nor have I ever spoken to this person before. SirDavies contacted me first to attack me.
As stated before this is my not first account on Destructoid and the words I used in my discussion were some of the nicest things I’ve ever said on Dtoid. Yet it’s only now that a longtime member of Destructoid contacted me and attacked what I had to say. At the same time funny enough the moderators on Dtoid have taken an interest in me. As flattered as I should be I found myself wondering if Destructoid is just a fraternity that attacks anyone it sees as a threat. Just for the record I have never “been in trouble” on Destructoid. Hell I didn’t even think you could get in trouble on Dtoid especially when Moderators allow people to attack its writers like Jed about being gay without blinking.
I put up with a lot of things on Destructoid including, anti-LGBT, racism, whitewashing, and questionable game reviews. I’ve been unhappy with the Destructoid partnerships and marketing tactics as well as its bizarre non-diversified staff changes. But it is only now that I’m ready for my Exodus. No website is perfect but I’ll be at damn monkey’s uncle if I’m in a be a patron with my money to a website that treats me, like a piece of garbage.
It’s taken me a long time to come to this decision but it’s a decision I’m happy to make when fraternity members of Destructoid like SirDavies have some type of unknown influence over its moderators and Dtoid staff. I know it’s not a big deal that I’m leaving Destructoid or believe in my heart that they’ve already closed their doors. As a matter of fact there’s enough people out there that feel the same way as me that it feels good in a way. Dtoid is like an old friend that keeps hitting on my girlfriend and I have had enough of its bullshit.
I’m not writing this in the hopes that you join me in some sort of mass exodus from Destructoid. This is not an attempt to bring even one Dtoid fan over to VIAHEX. This is about something bigger, this is about a community that’s lost one of its biggest fans. No one’s going to miss me , and although I’ve contacted Destructoid and several of its staff members about this problem and this story I know I will never get a response from the Dtoid staff. So why am I telling on you all this? It’s simple, I wanted to share my reasons for leaving behind one of my favorite gaming websites, because its better to be with friends when going thru a break up.
“Destructoid has had many issues on its forums. Let’s not forget the #gamergate problem at Dtoid”
Have you had your discussions removed from Destructoid? Did you think they had a good enough reason, or did you think that it was something else? Share your stories about Destructoid and tell me why you’ve left. All I can promise you is that I won’t delete your comments when you don’t agree with me. I wish Papa Nero the best of luck with all Modern Methods property. Goodbye and farewell old friend. SWEET!
