A female body — all bodies, really — is a machine. Every part of the body is part of a central communication system, relaying information and performing the labors necessary to live, necessary to participate in society, necessary to stay a productive member of our societies. The only reason we don’t consider our labor the labor of a robot, which is a Slavic word literally meaning “to labor,” is because we are composed of entirely organic material.

An enthusiasm pulsed through me whose language I knew well. These are modern times, I told myself. But we are not trapped in them. We can go where we like, communicating with angels, to reprise a time in human history more science fiction than the future.
