For those who don't know, the oldest surviving adaptation of Crime and Punishment is a German Expressionist film by Robert Wiene, probably most famous for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari!

From the looks of it, the original version has been entirely lost/destroyed. No two copies of this film are quite the same! That being said, the English intertitles we were left with were in very poor condition. Based off the only home release, it's pretty much a low quality DVD that's taken from a VHS recording of the film - So we're left with this.

Not to mention there is a ton of footage missing from it. It's usually extended versions of certain scenes, I don't recall which ones were fully removed. Even compared to the shorter version I've uploaded, the official English release we have is 30 minutes shorter! I wouldn't be surprised if the tinting they did also screwed with the footage. Ultimately, this doesn't make for a great viewing experience. I was wanting to do this ever since I first found out about it (so pretty much right when I finished the book, haha), so I'm glad to have finished it! I know more people are interested in the 2007 television series, but I recommend you check this out! I always thought German Expressionism was perfect for Crime and Punishment, and it's incredibly cool we still have the footage at all!

I also tried my hand at tinting each version 😄 I actually learned that tinting was done as a copy-guard against early film pirates! But a lot of films took the approach of tinting daytime scenes in an amber tone, while nighttime scenes were in blue. Those weren't the only colours you'd see, of course, some films make the decision to make certain rooms or scenes whatever other colour... but I'm just rambling now. I hope you enjoy!
