biography:
vera came from a marginally wealthy family, the youngest of five and the only girl. Her mother in particular was extremely judgemental, constantly criticising her daughter and never allowing her to be her true self. no matter what vera did she was never good enough to meet the monumentally high expectations set on her. after her adhd diagnosis, her family wrote her off as a failure and she could never quite recover from their disappointment. When vera came out as bisexual and was met with only hatred, she knew her relationship with her family was beyond repair and decided to cut them off herself. even if that independence meant living in the mines and working in a dive bar to make rent, it was worth it for her. despite having a degree in english literature, vera wasn’t built for the kind of professions that generally led to. her true dream was to become a writer. vera never felt more like herself than when her fingers buzzed excitedly over her laptop keyboard, itching to keep up with the ideas spiralling through her mind. however, it took a lot of unpaid work to make a career as an author and she had to pay the bills somehow. the drunken miner wouldn’t have been her first choice to drink at, let alone work in, but she had grown to like it a lot. as a self-realised gossip, vera revelled in swapping stories with the interesting patrons. she liked to think she brought some sunniness to an otherwise mildly depressing dive. vera presents herself as a happy-go-lucky girl who’s almost always up for anything. she makes friends easily and gets enjoyment from making others laugh and smile. despite this, she can also be quite selfish. though vera knows it’s an issue, sometimes she doesn’t see it as one. If she doesn’t put herself first, then who will? people see her as silly because she likes pretty things and doesn’t take herself too seriously. they think she has no idea what the real world is like and they couldn’t be more wrong. It’s why she likes gossip and secrets so much; knowledge and friendship are the most powerful tools in life. though she can be self-absorbed sometimes, vera prides herself on her intuitiveness with others. She knows that, despite her faults, she can be a great friend and she’s helped a lot of people through tough times. vera can spin a story in a million different ways and knows exactly what to say to capture whoever she is speaking to; it’s what she’s good at. whether it be with advice or cheering people up after a bad day, vera is on the case. a lot of people visit the drunken miner knowing they’ll leave with a lighter chest and a buzz from her surprisingly good whiskey specials. this isn’t where vera thought her life would be at 30, but she isn’t as resentful about it as she thinks she could be. her apartment, though a bit of a dump, is cozy and comforting. she likes her job and is slowly working on achieving her dream. she doesn’t have much to do with her blood relatives, but a chosen family is better anyway, surely. at this point Vera is living half on positive affirmations and half on cheap liquor. the only thing missing is someone to care about her as much as she seems to care about everyone else. maybe she'll get a cat.
