something i’ve been thinking about a lot this past month is how ruby isn’t a character who is easily corrupted. she isn’t greedy, she has no hunger for power, and despite being hurt (poor thing), she doesn’t channel that pain into fury.

and that is EXACTLY where my question comes in. for ruby to become a villain, without any curse falling over her, what would make her act in a malicious way?

it wouldn’t be greed, power, ambition, or pure rage. ruby doesn’t operate on those axes. she also isn’t someone who channels pain into indiscriminate hatred. she channels pain into guilt, fear, and self-restraint.

even if ruby possessed immense destructive power (which she kind of does), she wouldn’t use it to hurt people. the mere thought of hurting her family destroys her daily. so again, what would make her question her own goodness? what would make her doubt whether the right path is truly hers?

i started writing this post now even though i’ve been thinking about this a lot, because another question came up. if ruby were close to losing her romantic interest again, or someone in her family, would that destroy her enough for her to lose faith in goodness and abandon her humanity?

which leads to another question. would ruby be the kind of character who would rather destroy the world than lose the one she loves?

i’m leaning a little toward yes. ruby has a very strong protective instinct, both because of the wolf and because of her human side. she protects those she loves above herself. but would she protect those she loves above everything and everyone else?

ruby would sacrifice herself for those she loves, but would she sacrifice the world as well?

one thing is certain. what would break her is not wanting more, it is losing too much. ruby wouldn’t become a villain because she desires something forbidden. she would become a villain because she believes she has failed irreversibly the people she loves. she already lives with the feeling that her existence causes harm. so what would make her question her own goodness wouldn’t be ‘i want to do evil,’ but rather ‘maybe i was never good enough to stop evil.’

this dialogue is from wicked, but i believe it would work so well for them!

belle is such an interesting character because, at her core, she sees beauty in everything. her hunger for knowledge allows her to understand multiple moral perspectives and truly understand people. she sees everyone in a raw way; she doesn’t fall for appearances, she draws her own conclusions.

maybe for her it’s difficult to see someone bad as truly evil. she wants to understand. her curiosity won’t let her settle for shallow appearances. she analyzes, observes, and once she understands, she sees beauty.

if ruby asked belle to look at her, belle would see what she always sees: a kind, caring, loving, protective person who is deeply frightened.

if ruby asked belle to look at her through other people’s eyes, belle would struggle. she wouldn’t be able to so easily separate the real version of her sweet ruby from seeing her as the monster that both others and ruby herself believe she is.

seeing ruby as a monster would hurt belle deeply. because she has her convictions, her knowledge, and all the proof she needs of why ruby is not a monster. and she knows she would never be able to convince the entire world of that. knowledge guides her through the world and makes her fair, but her punishment is having to live with the ignorance of others and their blind judgment against her truth.
