My main inspiration for writing this fanfic
β This is the third time I've sent an invitation this week, but I still haven't heard back from that person β a girl complained dejectedly at a restaurant table β Do you think he's upset because he didn't get the invitation before everyone else? β the girl continued the debate that hasn't left her alone for days
Hanamichi, at her side, looked at her without paying attention to the girl while playing with the straw of his drink. He hadn't worried so much about Rukawa because he knew the man's apathetic personality towards everything related to everything around him except basketball, although Hanamichi felt the need and the urge to run to Rukawa
β Rukawa Kaede has never been one to worry about trifles like a classmateβs wedding β His words come out harsher than one would think. Miko looks at him with a bit of sadness in her eyes. There was that Hanamichi she hated again β So donβt worry, send one last invitation again, and if he doesnβt respondβ¦β The sentence trails off, and Hanamichi stops playing with the straw in his hand, a bit desperate. What if he doesnβt respond? What? If he doesnβt respond? Who cares? A knot forms in Hanamichiβs stomach. A few moments pass before he takes a breath to finish his sentence β β¦if he doesnβt respond, just forget about it and delete him from the guest list. We donβt need people like that in our lives β Miko looks at him while playing with her nails
β It's okay β Hanamichi doesn't say many words after that conversation and Miko doesn't force him, she simply starts talking about certain wedding topics and closes the topic of Rukawa
The night passes slowly, and Hanamichi has no idea how many hours he spent talking with Miko about the decorations for the main table. But it's almost midnight, and a light storm has hit the town. Hanamichi wants to go home, take a bath, and forget everything that has been tormenting him since he proposed to Miko. He wants to let the water run over his body and forget that the world, Miko, his friends, and, most of all, Rukawa even exist
Rukawa Kaede. There's a bitter taste every time that name comes to mind. He hates it, he despises it, Hanamichi feels dirty every time Rukawa comes near him, near his mind, near his life. A feeling of abandonment and rejection overwhelms him, and he always ends up with the same question: Why? But there's never a decent answer, one he likes
The night grows colder and the rain increases, but Hanamichi doesn't seem willing to stop, not until he finds what's bothering him, something he's left in the past, an unanswered question. The closer he gets to his destination, the faster Hanamichi's pulse quickens and the colder the water falls on his body
The place is the same as he last remembered it, the benches a little rusty and Hanamichi could swear they've planted more trees since the last time he decided to go there, but the place of his nightmares remains the same. The old court in that almost forgotten park, the place where he and Rukawa used to spend their afternoons ten years ago, the last place where Hanamichi saw him for the last time before he abandoned him. Much of the time after Rukawa left had passed, ignoring that place out of spite and betrayal, but after his return to Japan and the conversation with Miko, something had pushed him to return
β Idiot fox β anger filled him. That was the problem, Rukawa had abandoned him without any feelings, he had left for America without saying anything, he had spent years without calling him, without a message even when Hanamichi had managed to follow him to America, the man had continued the same, keeping his distance from Hanamichi without saying a word, without crossing his gaze, only a cold grimace and a half-goodbye full of resentment. Why?
Hanamichi's anger grew, and the rain subsided, the atmosphere thick with tension. Hanamichi longed to have Rukawa in front of him and beat him until his face was covered in blood, until his fists were red, until Rukawa apologized, until Hanamichi forgot about such feelings, until Rukawa gave him an explanation, until everything between them was back to normal
β Damn it β his eyes began to sting again and a strong anguish hit him. A few simple tears fell along with the rain down Hanamichi's cheek and helplessness invaded him. It was always like this when it came to Rukawa, he would never be different, he was just another person in his life, no matter the story. Sakuragi Hanamichi would always be below Rukawa Kaede, and that wasn't exactly what bothered him
