     this is actually a really good question to ask. i can only give so much advice though, because what may work for me may not work for you and that’s okay. but i can definitely give you some pointers that have helped me in the past. 

work backwards – it may sound weird, but it’s a good tip. start with your character’s personality, their desires, their behaviour and traits before you get to the backstory. why? because having what they have now out in front of you will help you decide what in their past contributed to the person they are now. it’s really important to make the connections with them now with things that happened in their past. 

tvs, movies and books are your friends – one of the best ways of figuring out your character’s backstory is well.. getting inspiration from other characters. again, have the person they are now figured out before hand, then delve into the possibilities given to you by other writers. just be careful not to subject your character’s personality etc. to any change just to fit a different backstory. if you like an idea and it doesn’t work, the best thing to do is compromise. 

analyse other characters – often i choose a character my muse’s face-claim has already played and i analyse them and their backstory. but whatever and whoever you choose, learning how to analyse and understand the influence that a backstory has on someone is the best way to choose yours carefully, and it will also give you the skills you need to make something more unique. 

focus on relationships – again going back to the whole ‘past them influences present them’, come up with certain relationships your muse could have had previously. basic things like did they have two parents or a single parent? two gay dads? how many friends did they have in school? from there you can ask yourself what the dynamics of their relationship with these people were like and how it affected them. (eg. toxic single parent + toxic relationship = your character’s reason for being self destructive in the present) 

clich-yay or clich-no? – one of the hardest decisions to make when coming up with backstories for me personally is deciding how predictable i want to be with my character. if you want their story to be different and ground breaking, steer away from obvious tropes that are laced into some backstories. 

your major events – these should be the most important as well as the most thought out part of your character’s backstory. i suggest there being a major event that shakes their personality, their career and their relationships. just because they are major events doesn’t mean they need to be angsty or dramatic, they could be quite happy. but these events would definitely be something that shaped your character’s life more than anything. 

structuring the backstory – when writing my character’s backstory i would often start at their birth and sometimes i would go a little further to before they were even conceived to what their parent’s relationship was like beforehand. (eg. a character with parents who were childhood sweethearts could be a firm believer in love, ultimately this shapes their outlook on relationships and should be included for the cause for the effect.) then i would move onto the family dynamic if applicable, then who they were and what happened in school, then high school etc. until you reach present day. 

feel free to elaborate as much as possible !

Who is more likely to feed the other in public?

Who gives the other random little compliments?

Who is always stealing food from the other’s plate?

Who is more likely to let the other borrow their car? 

Who makes the list before they go grocery shopping?

Who makes sure the other takes their meds when sick?

Who watches sports and has to teach the other the rules?

Who pulls the other to their feet for a dance in the living room?

Who has to keep reminding the other to hurry or they’ll be late?

Eu jogo em uma cmm que eu adoro os personagens e adoro como tudo flui, é uma cmm menos movimentada que o normal, mas é excelente, só que ultimamente vem acontecendo alguns casos de plots que ninguém avisa o que vai acontecer.

Por exemplo, fulano e ciclano tem uma interação e falam de beltrano, plotam ao redor disso, jogam e fazem HC, mas não avisam player de beltrano. Isso tem sido bem chato. Meu personagem é beltrano e dizem que é pra não misturar IC e OOC, mas é claro que ficamos ofendidos, e ainda fico incomodada porque parece que sou a louca que mistura tudo por ficar chateada.

Pra mim, o pior, é perceber envolvimento só depois em plots assim. Eu queria que falassem pra mim que meus personagens estão passando pela conversa e a desculpa que dão é 'ah, segui o muse, foi assim que houve, só joguei', mas não é bem assim, sendo que combinaram antes entre si. Eu não ligo de falarem, só queria saber disso antecipadamente também, ou mesmo depois.

O que posso fazer? Não sei se falo com os players ou recorro até a central. Só sei que minha experiência pode acabar arruinada e não quero outro trauma.

olha, nony, vou ser sincera com você e dizer que devia ser regra em todo e qualquer rp, principalmente de twitter onde as interações são mais reservadas, que os players se comunicassem sobre isso, sujeito a penalidades e strikes, porque não é certo.

em primeiro lugar, é claro que essa coisa de dizerem que você mistura tudo é uma desculpa pra isentar a culpa dos demais players que envolveram seus personagens sem consulta prévia. eu não acho que seja vergonha nenhuma você fazer uma inter que ocorreu como ocorreu e falar depois: "ei, meu personagem falou do seu, envolveram ele nesse plot, tudo bem pra você? quer participar?", porque isso resolve muita crise. o que eu vejo dos relatos das pessoas em comunidades tuiteiras hoje em dia é que sempre parecem acontecer ao redor desse problema, de falta de comunicação entre os players e algo que vira godmodding e metagaming. tudo bem você fazer se você pedir desculpas, conscientizar e refazer o plot. nem sempre somos perfeitos e também podemos deixar a desejar, mas uma vez resolvido e aprendido, nunca mais! e é claro que ficamos chateados porque isso nos exclui de uma coisa que estamos envolvidos indiretamente sem ter controle... o que também é godmodding.

a melhor opção, em primeiro lugar, é expor esse seu ponto com os players que causam esse tipo de desconforto. chega no chatzinho e fala com os players, diz que quer fazer parte mas não dessa forma, que quer que pare como anda sendo desenrolado por causa disso e daquilo, e que não é mistura de ic e ooc, só uma coisa que parece te perder sua própria muse. acredito que isso possa resolver boa parte dos problemas, sim, e adiantar uma solução.

caso não dê certo, aí o negócio é recorrer até a central e dizer tudo o que aconteceu e perguntar se não podem fazer algo a respeito, como uma regra, porque isso também pode estar acontecendo com mais pessoas sem você sabe, ou então é só uma folga de players que desenvolvem as coisas em um grupo mais fechado, excluindo os demais mesmo usando seus personagens.

uma dica amiga para todos que jogam rp de twitter, porque eu já joguei em várias comunidades e passei pelo mesmo: conversem. por favor, nunca façam as coisas com a desculpa esfarrapada de que você só seguiu sua muse e criou uma intriga com outro personagem do nada porque era o que parecia certo. sabe quanto custa ir até o player e dizer "ei, o meu personagem fofocou da briga deles pra uma pessoa" ou "ei, queria te dizer que mencionei seu personagem em tal situação" ou até mesmo "ei, fiz isso e aquilo sem seu consentimento e queria saber como podemos resolver"? zero reais e uma consciência suja. fora que melhora o ambiente de jogo em 1000%, de um jeito que todo mundo consegue confiar nos players e se ajudar de várias maneiras. é muito mais eficaz e confortável, gera muito menos ansiedade e gera muito mais conforto em um jogo bacana.

e falo por experiência própria, porque eu já estive nos dois lados da moeda. eu me sinto muito envergonhada por ter feito isso e não ter pedido desculpas, e pediria se tivesse oportunidade, como também me sinto ofendida pelas coisas que fizeram às custas de personagens meus sem dar um alô antes.
