I think that yes, you need to build a real following. I have about 80,000 followers but no one reads my work online! Some writers are real stalwarts of the writing community though and you can get as involved as you like.I see blogs as evidence of your ability- like a musician building a back catalogue. When you feel you have a sustained body of work I'd use that to contact an agent, the blog being a portfolio of sorts. Remember also that anything 'published' online will not be touched by an agent - save your best work and use that as an unseen manuscript when you contact them. Hence why I've stopped posting my work online...Did I answer your question? I hope it helped in some way.
