hugh studied at the university of cambridge while also volunteering at their museum of zoology. he earned a bachelor’s degree in the history of art, was accepted into their postgraduate program and attempted to get a master’s degree in history of art and architecture, but dropped out midway through the program after the stress culminated in a mental breakdown. he developed an interest in bookbinding afterward, finding it a good way to relieve tension.

linnet and lark — identical twin sisters and dancers. they have a fondness for birds and few qualms when it comes to tossing around wealth for amusement. rarely seen apart, they will quite literally finish each other’s sentences and often speak as though they have one mind (until they disagree on something, that is). debatably human (“but it’s rude to say such things!” “terribly rude, you know.”). they make a brief appearance in this drabble on my other blog!

"...Go on."
a slow smile. “well, then. let’s start with the basics, shall we? would you like those bones inside your body, or outside it? choose carefully.”
“do you know how many bones the human body has? it’s 206. they start with 300 when they’re babies but they fuse. wouldn’t you want to go back? have as many bones as a baby? what if i could help you?”
I love this drawing by Henry Patrick Raleigh
my mother taught me to crochet when i was young. she was left handed, so she taught me how in the bathroom mirror so her hands would be in the right position.
she learned to crochet from her grandmother, who was right handed. her grandma was the one that originally used the bathroom mirror to teach her granddaughter properly.
i find something poetic about that. here in this bathroom mirror, through generations, we adapt to our young who have a different way of learning and interacting with the world
meriwether definitely contributes creepy antique clown dolls to the collectors’ shop.

gilmore might have had too much to drink. though the ringleader harbored far too little care for sickness or intoxication, his secretery had insisted that he ought to remove himself from the party should the drinks scatter his mind. naturally, gilmore had refused. then nadège proceeded to destroy him in pools, and the ringleader had no choice but to shamefully accept his defeat.
now, his mumbling carried him down the desserted hallway---for his loss had been accepted in principle but not in spirit, and when he stumbled, he continued to blame the stubborn white ball.
thankfully, the room beyond was occupied. sat atop a dresser, accompanied by a cherry-filled glass and a motionless mechanical bird, was a fair-headed girl gilmore was certain he'd seen before, in passing. he hummed in greeting. the room itself was not crowded enough to be considered part of the party, so technically his promise was unbroken. he joined her, with some difficulty.
gloves? "oh, do i!" did he? a swirling glance downwards confirmed he did. he laughed, triumphant. "i do, i do. but what, pray tell, might you need them for? are you playing some kind of trick?"
a smile spread across parsley’s face at her newfound company. the champagne had granted her a bubbly sort of warmth, true, but a restless boredom had still crept in without someone to chat with. the solitude had begun weighing on her. this person seemed anything but dull — and a bit unsteady on his feet, in a familiar way. parsley instantly took a liking to him.
he laughed, and an appreciative giggle tumbled from parsley’s lips as well, bright as ringing bells. at his question, she tilted her head, thoughtful. “a trick? oh, well— i suppose i am, actually.” mischievous delight swirled within her at this realization. “it’s not a magic trick, though. it’s a trick to outdo another trick.”
she pointed at the latched cage — more specifically, at the bird within. “i need that bird, but the cage is— hmm. it’s a bit tricky to open. a bit stingy, you know.” painful to touch. she’d tried a few times before giving up. her nose wrinkled, accusation lacing her words. “looks like gold, but isn’t.” she showed the other her hands. the painted iron had burned angry red lines across her fingers. “the bird’s the same hue, so i bet it stings as well. so! gloves would be lovely.”
little fae patron facts —
meriwether.
comes across as composed and impassive, if not faintly amused. difficult to rattle. has a calm, honey-smooth voice that rarely wavers or changes tone regardless of the situation.
values control over others and over herself. unlike patrons like parsley, merry never overindulges on alcohol and rarely partakes in risky gambles. she enjoys watching other people take risks and face the consequences of their actions, however.
collects names, but does little with them herself aside from giving them to others (namely other fae) in return for treasures or favors. for simplicity in collecting and trading, she turns these names into glimmering brooches with intricate designs representing the name’s original owner.
meriwether’s name once belonged to a trapeze artist who seemingly died in a tragic accident, only to “come back from the dead” a few days later. some people swore the artist looked rather different than she used to, but most people claimed she looked the same. any old photos of the performer before her accident are strangely blurred; too blurred to make out her features.
a faint trail of death and tragic accidents follows meriwether in general — so faint that she evades serious consequences. if anyone confronts her about this, she smiles and redirects the topic. nevertheless, it’s no surprise that those who know her reputation rarely cross her.
