first off rupi kaur writes in free verse, the no rules type of poetry. she does not make heavy (or any) use of rhythm, meter, or rhyme. she also does not use much metaphor, her poems are extremely direct and at face value. they tend to use simple words that directly express emotional realizations or experiences. she doesn’t use much sensory description or imagery. i think this is what people are criticizing usually when they say her poetry is bad. but here’s my take

rupi kaur is an immigrant and her first language was not english. she has discussed herself that her style of poetry became a way to make the craft accessible not only to herself but to others like her. as she learned how to identify her feelings and speak up for herself after being raised in an environment that did not always necessarily encourage that her poetry became an important way of processing and interpreting her experiences.

in order to do this you will dig up your pepper plant (roots and all) in the fall when production is over and you’re getting close to first frost (but not yet). then you will untangle the roots and get em long and dangly like hair. then you take a hose and you put that baby on shower mode and just absolutely spray the hell out of those roots. gotta get all the in between areas and everything. make sure you get alllllll the dirt. any fungus or anything, get rid of it. squeaky clean!!

then when you’re done rinsing the roots you have to clip them. we tend to take about 6 inches of root growth. just chop em off with some clippers.

then you get a fresh, unopened bag of potting soil and a clean pot. then you dunk that baby into the pot with the fresh soil. THEn you get your clippers again. this time you clip every single green leaf off the pepper. no green left! you also will clip away all stems and stalks except for your 2-4 main, strongest branches. well, you will clip those still but not all the way. just trim them to shorten.

the. you bring it inside, put it in a sort of darkish cool spot, keep it moist enough not to die over the winter, and pick off any green growth that happens while it’s indoors.

when spring comes you can take it outside and plant it in the ground! and you have a whole big strong pepper plant ready to take right off for the growing season, it gets a bigger head start and will end up stronger, more sturdy, and with more peppers !!!
